Rave Unto/Away from his music

I've been listening to Prince since elementary school. I once got backhanded because I was listening to Pussy Control (I was 9). 7 years later I haven't stopped. I did stop however when I discovered the monstrosity called Extraloveable Reloaded. I've heard the 83 recording and was extremely frustrated with the new stripped down copy. Prince has had a reputation for watering down things that don't need to be touched but I would have never expected this song to take this fate. I'm just flustered. It's not just this song either. I haven't liked many songs by him post Rave unto because I just can't handle the clean I love Jesus guy who made Pussy Control, Head, Come, Feel U Up, Sister, and Annie Christian. Anybody feel the same way?

Ok. Prince "is finished",

He hasn't made a brilliant album since Gold Experience in 1995. Is that good enough for you..

....i know where you are coming from but at the same time it's one thing for a 22 year old guy on stage in stockings singing (and simulating) Head, but quite another for a 55 year old to do so (age-ism be damned!).

As for the '83 recording, I would respectfully suggest that the "I'm gonna have 2 rape u now" lyric might be a smidgen offensive.

I can handle critical opinion, in fact, I am critical about some of his works my self. What does irk me though, is the same opinion being repeated over and over and over and over, all across the org. If something was added to the opinion from time to time, that would be something, but it's not.

That's subjective. confused Some of us have liked the albums after TGE. It's all a matter of opinion. I didn't care for 20Ten, but some here did. I liked Lotus and MPLSound, but others didn't. It's just different people like different things. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't know if I'm missing something....

But if he has a problem with the 'rape' lines, why not just do something as simple as remove the vocal from that section? Leave the song intact, but when that part comes around (and all three references are in the same section) just drop out the vocal (and if you want to get creative, put a guitar solo in there in place)

Done and done. Why do things have to be so difficult?

Again, maybe I am missing something - but I'm sure someone here will correct me if I am wink

...side note, I used to think he said "I wanna virgin, babe - I don't think you heard me - I wanna virgin, babe" <img src=" />

I'm new here, and I am struck by how incessantly negative everyone is here. How long has this forum been like this?

It's odd because obviously people come here because they liked his music at some point, perhaps loved it. But now it's just SO negative. For those of you who feel this way, why stick around posting messages?

Again , if his music over the past 20 years is that bad, it's odd to keep harping on the same point continuously. Even odder, to frequent a site devoted to his music.

Not criticizing, just curious. Please give a non-negative response.

I just wanted to see if I anyone felt the same way. Its just the simple fact that as fans were used to him being inconsistent but he's been inconsistent for a little longer than normal. I mainly miss being able to play a Prince album from start to finish without skips.

It's never fully been about the graphic nature of Prince's 80's works lyrically [for the most part hah!]. He made plenty of cuss-free songs in the 80's that I Love. I miss the creativity, aggressiveness, & all-around funkiness that he used to have.

I feel most of us come here because we have feelings for each other: respect, anger, frustration, amusement, bewilderment...love, in a way. Prince is the reason most of us decided to join the org, but I believe it's the people that keep us reading, posting, and caring enough to share our opinions. This old place is sort of like the local hangout you go to when you get the chance to have a drink, converse, or just to relax for awhile. The unique personalities of others can become familiar, and when they don't show up as usual, you start to miss them. Anyhow, that's my take on the question you asked. Peace, and don't be a stranger okay? wink

I was thinking about that today, that Prince has really had an evolution moment in his life. He has come along way, & is a better person for it. Can't knock that. Just roll back in ur memory bank & enjoy the hedonism of those lyrics. Some of us do become better with time.. I am digging the "I love Jesus guy", & I also like Lotusflower, a lot. I need to listen to MPLSound more to tell if I dig it.

I'd recommend you not to skip any tracks, but to skip the whole albums. MPLS is a document of Prince being unable to update his sound. Whereas the castrated version of TRC, called Lotusflow3r, sees Prince trying to compensate the lack of good songs with lots of unfocused guitar doodling. wink

I like the new version (my favorite is the 2011 mix, actually) much more than the 1982 version.

I miss the confusion, the vulnerability too. The Prince that loved God but was also tormented by their relationship. The Prince that had a running dialogue with Him upstairs during the Purple Rain tour, or the maniacal, screaming Prince making his peace during Anna Stesia at Dortmund 88.
Even as an atheist I found it honest, and that's the Prince I loved. The Prince that stripped himself and bore his soul, the Prince that let his guard down.
The Prince of today is so self-assured, religiously, musically and morally that it has no content to draw me in, it's just too boring for me to care.

It's stripped down in the sense that the overall finish is akin to a squelchy fart in comparison to the sizzling, bristling, striding original.
Funk should smell of festering shit not squelchy, wet farts.

I admit, I had been listening to Lotusflower more than MPLSound, but I have now switched cds. Take a listen to 'Ol Skool Company'. He's says something (about the music of 2day) & I think it's a pretty groovy song..

Pretty groovy song, yes. Lots of Prince's 80s trademark funk. But still: the synth line doesn't work at all.

Since Prince's music of the last 2 and a half decades doesn't appeal to me for the most part: Why the hell should I care for his statments about today's music?!
