Strange - he's switched the names of the songs from yesterday. Now Octopus Heart is the longer one.

Probably Soundcloud did it themselves - being thrilled that Prince finally is with them. Who knows.. be careful what you think. wink

I found them pretty boring myself. It sounds like the band just fucking around, which I enjoy from time to time, but, yeah, this stuff sounds like N.E.W.S.

And by 'news', I mean bad news. Might play OK at an aftershow but I wouldn't pay for either of these tracks.

You know these were free, right? And won't be on the album?

Yes, I know. And you know I wasn't talking about money. I was simply saying that doing jams like these is the easiest thing in the world for him. (Which is actually a compliment for his musical skills!) But still these feel like throwaway jams. If this is second best, then why put it out anyway? How is this going to get the people who find it boring interested in buying the upcoming album? Compare this to putting out a single like 1999 or Get Off. THAT's the kind of stuff that will want to make you hear the album!

Yes these new instrumentals are boring, overall I'm not that impressed with the music Prince has released so far this year but there's a few decent songs. Anyway I'm glad hes releasing all this music even though I don't like all of it

That's just it: They ARE throwaway jams, which is why they've done just that, tossed them up for free. If you dig it, cool, if not, there will be something else to hear soon enough.

As for being a single or an ad for the album, at this point we still don't have any idea what the album will be. It's rumoured to be instrumental, but until we get an official announcement, and a song that is actually on the record, who knows?

I hope you are right on this,

I need something different than these boring "jams", but I am in more and more doubt he will ever release anything interesting again. sad

No worries. I'm not a musician, so I don't know much about chord structure etc. His musicianship is not in doubt. (which I mentioned in my post.) So yeah, that leaves composition, or the lack of it. These jams go in one ear and out another. Nice for once, but that's it. If you like 'em, fine. I don't dislike 'em, but he can do so much better and that's what I'm missing.

Relax, child. I like both of these alot, but they're obviously pretty spontaneous, the band jamming on a groove rather than fullly fleshed out songs.

I think these "throwaway" jams (and the others on 3rdEyeTV) are the best thing Prince has done in years. I was craving for more material in the vein of 8, 16, The War, Xpectation, C-Note and N.E.W.S., even if the ignorant ones think it sucks just because they have not been educated to this kind of music (they sure can dislike it but the way they keep saying it's crap... Ke$ha and Lady Ga Ga is all they deserve lol lol lol)

I hope prince does more and more of this at last, and not only gives us one or 2 experimental albums every 10 years...

Interesting! I guess they've created a set but have it hidden. Nice find!

Edit: Turns out SoundCloud is just playing other tracks it deems to related. If you click the tiny red waveform at the top right of the screen you'll see where these other tracks are coming from.

In terms of everything. There are students at the jazz school in Denton, Texas who do this and arguably a lot better just to warm up. There's nothing wrong with meandering nothings. I don't mind the free instrumentals, (aside from Prince's guitar playing) but there's not much point. They don't have a memorable melody. N.E.W.S. is rancid because it's nothing but vamps and solos. Until Prince gets his psuedo jazz/fusion chops together on the guitar OR starts making compositions that are interesting as instrumentals then calling these throwaways is certainly a valid interpretation by a non-musician.

I just wish he would leave the wah-wah off. He only turns it on to smear out notes when it's time to do something that involves technique. Maybe the wah-wah pedal is to distorted lead guitar as auto-tune is to voice? Can't think of anything cool to play? NO PROBLEM! Just turn on the wah-wah pedal and pick really fast!

That's how it seems to me, anyway.
