throwaway jams?? what the fuck????

please explain in terms of WHAT?? chord structure? musicianship? composition??

this is precisely after 11 years im really tiring of this site

In terms of everything. There are students at the jazz school in Denton, Texas who do this and arguably a lot better just to warm up. There's nothing wrong with meandering nothings. I don't mind the free instrumentals, (aside from Prince's guitar playing) but there's not much point. They don't have a memorable melody. N.E.W.S. is rancid because it's nothing but vamps and solos. Until Prince gets his psuedo jazz/fusion chops together on the guitar OR starts making compositions that are interesting as instrumentals then calling these throwaways is certainly a valid interpretation by a non-musician.

I just wish he would leave the wah-wah off. He only turns it on to smear out notes when it's time to do something that involves technique. Maybe the wah-wah pedal is to distorted lead guitar as auto-tune is to voice? Can't think of anything cool to play? NO PROBLEM! Just turn on the wah-wah pedal and pick really fast!

That's how it seems to me, anyway.

agreed. It's a nice listen but I wish he'd compose something rather than jamming. I think he has the skill, but no drive to do so. His perogative of course, but my perogative to agree that these are toss offs.

So if we meet up right now you can hum the melody to me from both of these instrumentals? Cool story, bro.

That's my whole point: you seem to claim that a memorable melody is a necessary condition for a piece of music to be considered "good". The thing is that:

1/ A melody doesn't have to be the main element of a piece of music, it can be a secondary element, it can be something that appears once in a while and disappears, it can be an succession of very different short pieces of melodies, etc.

AND

2/ A piece of music actually doesn't have to have a melody at all to be relevant. A piece of music can be made only of rhythmic elements, it can be made only of repetitive loops or dissonant harmonies, it can be made only of sound textures without any notion of melody, harmony or rhythm at all, etc.

So no, I couldn't hum the melodies of these instrumental tracks after hearing them a couple of time, and I'm kinda glad I can't because no matter how much I love a good pop song (and I do!), there's more to music than pop songs. Prince has done his fair share of wonderful melodic pop songs, I like it when he explores other territories once in a while.

Why would it be official?

Audio with clicks and cracks is not what we expect from mr Prince.

Why not integrate this in his latest website? (should not be hard)

I checked the Official 3rd Eye Girl Facebook page and sure enough, they posted the Soundcloud link on Wednesday, so the Soundcloud page is official.

That's just it: They ARE throwaway jams, which is why they've done just that, tossed them up for free. If you dig it, cool, if not, there will be something else to hear soon enough.

As for being a single or an ad for the album, at this point we still don't have any idea what the album will be. It's rumoured to be instrumental, but until we get an official announcement, and a song that is actually on the record, who knows?

Debating Prince's music is like debating the wether. No mater how much you do, both do what they want.

Won't stop anyone talking about it either.
