The instrumental jam on Small Club

Aside from the lead line sample from "The Max"/"Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic," were any other elements of that song reused elsewhere? (It also sounds to me as though parts of "People Without" got thrown in here.)

Was it really just an impromptu jam, or was it a rehearsed song that was intended for something?

It's a jam for soundcheck purposes...

I think it's quite obvious this was a jam and not a rehearsed song.

That's a damn fine soundcheck jam.

Really? It seems so...cohesive and thought-out.

Cohesive and well-played, certainly. But thought-out? Not a chance. The instrumental jams are an accumulation of handles and chord progressions that had been used throughout the whole evening. Nothing too exciting going on harmonically or in terms of course of action to suggest this was anything more than someone starting a jam and Prince giving (universal musical) cues inbetween.

Still it's pretty damn good and funky, mind!

Parts of it were definitely worked on in the solos of other songs at aftershows during that period. I'm sure there's something (though I don't remember what) at Camden or one of the Midnight Mess shows. I believe it was the main chord progression. Can anybody back this up and fresh my memory?

It's musically the best part of the whole recording. That's the track I'd play to surprise and impress someone. In fact it's really the first two tracks that are jaw dropping to my ears.

Agreed. Except I would add JMI and Forever in My Life to the jaw dropping list.

Absolutely.

The aftershows around the SOTT/Lovesexy tours had some great improvised jams.

A lot of him just strating out on a guitar riff, calling out chords or beat ideas and then the band would go off. I'm not bitching, but it seems that he doesn't really do this method at aftershows anymore.

They seem to know what songs/covers they are going to do in the aftershows now whereas back then it seems like it was much more off the cuff and he would just call stuff off and see where it went.

I think Housequake is a mess in that show. It's the soundboard mix. So messed up.
