I don't often listen to this one as you have to listen to it in it's entirity rather than selected tracks. This post made me listen to it yesterday. For me, the only worthwhile tracks are Alphabet Street, Positivity and I Wish You Heaven. The rest is too religious for me and overall not worth listening to the whole album for these 3 songs. For me this is probably his weakest album overall.

You don't have the tracks seperate?

I can't help seeing When 2 R In Love as a black album track.

Love Positivity, Lovesexy, Anna Stesia, Alphabet Street. Brilliant album.

Even though Scarlett Pussy is a B side, it doesn't feel or fit well with the Lovesexy ideal, feels like a SOTT/Black Album piece (of course it was intended 4 Sheila E's 4th album)

If he released the album now, Scarlett Pussy would be the "hidden track" buried after 77 blank tracks lol

Even if you do, it's still the kind of album you need to listen to all the way, just like Marvin's What's Going on. Individual songs may not be the strongest ever, but as a whole... It's an experience. A trip. It's his ultimate album, the one that sums up everything he can do. So I only agree with the first sentence of LondonIrish' post!

Perhaps there was just nowhere left to go. How can you top this? I guess after this one there was just nothing left to do but repeat himself. He had said everything he had to say about God and love.
(This does not mean he made no good music afterwards, just less surprising and with ups and downs.)

That's true. When an artist reaches their creative peak (as Prince did with this SOTT and this album),there's really nowhere else to go.No more ground to break.

My favourite Prince album

Last album in a stunning 8 album streak and, dare I say it, last great album he made...

Still keeping the faith 25 years later that'll he'll come up with something as good as this again!

Pink Cashmere would have fit well and it did have that Lovesexy feel

That's the part that get's me,

I think he had about 3-5 more if he continued with Dream Factory (the Revolution) Sheila E(Sheila E) Jill Jones, Madhouse, I think what happened in 1986 with the whole Flesh sessions, Dream Factory, Camille tracks, I think he could have gone in 1990 with a more established sound and direction

I mention it every time I see a Lovesexy thread, or a "subtle Prince things" thread, but that heart/yes symbol right there^^^?

If you owned the Lovesexy cassette and the cover up to the light, the heart symbol would shine through from the other side and fit perfectly on Prince's thigh at a 90 degree angle (It leave my name upon my thigh), too perfectly to be a coincidence. I discovered this by accident one sunny day and I always thought it was a really clever touch.

What? He wore pants that read Prince along his thigh and "Yes" is not his name.

I remember noticing that as a kid on my cassette artwork. I never thought it was intentional, it could be.

It's hard to explain and I don't have Photoshop on this computer.

Check the liner notes on the album/cassette. In the credits, there's a "YES" symbol and it says "YES = Whatever (or "Prince". I forget which.). Take the cassete sleeve out of the case, hold it up to the light and see if the heart symbol isn't superimposed perfectly on his naked thigh, showing through from the other side (where the liner notes are).

Seems too perfectly placed to be an accident. That "YES" graphic is just floating there in the book that came with the cassette.

If I get some free time later, I'll demonstrate what i mean.

OK. this. When you hold up the cassette cover to a light, it looks like this:

[img:$uid]http://i44.tinypic.com/33ekcpu.jpg[/img:$uid]

Doesn't work with the CD though so maybe it was an accident.

The lyrics to the title song say "It leaves my name upon my THIGH"

The liner notes/credits say "YES/Heart = Prince: Whatever"

There.

Too cool to be a coincidence in my opinion.

I bet it's just one of those little "Prince-isms" that you have to be either actively looking for or high enough to notice once you see or hear it. I'm not trying to get into "Play Stairway to Heaven backwards" territory with this thing, I just always though it was neat. Prince is already credited in the liner notes, so to add the Heart/Yes symbol just seemed extraneous and redundant for no real reason (except for this one). I think it was planned. That heart fits too perfectly.

Then again, that doesn't explain why the CD doesn't work that way so maybe it was just some odd combination of weed, a sunny day, and open window and a new Prince tape that I was reading the booklet for.

As to the album, it's pretty good, but I have to be in the mood for it. My favorite tracks are ones that most others don't like (Positivity, Dance On, Glam Slam, Lovesexy) while the ones i enjoy the least everyone seems to think are classic (When 2 R in Love, Alphabet Street, Eye Know).

'Anna Stesia' is a straight up classic; like 'Joy in Repetition' the undeniably best track in a mixed bag. The tour was crazy. I hadn't seen him since Purple Rain and didn't know what to make of it when I saw it, but the years have aged it nicely. I remember the Erotic City opening bit and when that riser went up during Anna Stesia and feeling the goosebumps, but the sound where I saw it (Philadelphia Spectrum) has always been notriously shitty and echoey so mostly the drums drowned everything out. That's not a bad thing when it's Sheila, but the synthetic beats were way too overpowering.

I still swear to this day that the cover alone cost him 100,000 in sales. Looking back on it, Lovesexy really seems like Prince at his most homoerotic, at least from a visual standpoint, and that was off putting to a lot of people. Then again, those same people would eat up Poison, Judas Priest and Cinderella and shitty metal like that, swearing it was the height of masculine rock and roll posturing, but Prince was just too gay for them.

But something had changed. Prince believed that he had experienced a spiritual and moral epiphany, and that Chavez, serving as a guide, had shown him the way to greater connection with God and other people. The Black Album, he decided, represented the anger and licentiousness that he must leave behind. After casting about for months for a way to truly put the Revolution era behind him, he had found one.

Having shelved the Black Album, Prince immediately threw himself into the recording of his next LP, Lovesexy, which he conceived as a document of his epiphany.

...

Moreover, very few of Prince's associates related to the lyrical messages, and also wondered why Ingred Chavez, who seemed to some a bit odd, was playing such a huge role. When band members seemed confused by the lyrics of the title track, he rerecorded it to make the meaning ring out more clearly. It still didn't work. "I did not understand what the term 'lovesexy' was supposed to mean," Eric Leeds said. "People weren't getting it."
