It's not just hardcores at these shows. That's an assumption. I met a lot of first timers, who had never been to a Prince show. They didn't mind paying either.

Would they be sadly disappointed without a sampler set?

Prince appears to think so.

Me personally I loved the sampler set in Vegas but many complain that its not authentic cause the band not actually playing and prince just taking easy way out by not having to teach songs to band.Is this Prince being lazy?

Surely it depends on whether or not he's making his funky guitar face when he's playing it.

I thought the show was for our fun.

We have the originally recorded music at home, don't we?

Then it as 'new'. Now it is has grown old.

He's not showing himself as a serious musician when he continues doing that sampler thing for the 6th year now (at least since 2007).

Has any one stopped to think that this Sampler Set may be the only way we EVER hear these songs? The lyrical content is not something I expect to hear from Prince.( example. The words to Darling Nikki, in full) . Not gonna happen! Im happy just to hear the samples headbang

I think that playing the full CD gives a better impression of the now unplayable songs. (unplayable live I mean of course)

While I love me some Wendy & Lisa, even with the entirety of the Revolution, even they couldn't perform the record to perfection during the recent (ish) First Avenue performance.

Which is absolutely fine by me. Artist can choose any medium and presentation they want. It's their perogative.

They didn't evene come close imo. And there's no chance in hell that W&L or any member of the Revolutioncould do justice to song like Shockadelica.

The wooh is on the one!

But can they sing them? No offense to anyone singing Prince's songs, but Prince *does* have a very unique falsetto. That's what got my attention in the first place, the voice. It's just not the same. Just speaking for myself.

But live it sounded great. The atmosphere. It was an experience. Much like Prince's new shows. And straight up:

I loved the subtlety in Wendy's approach to THE solo in Purple Rain. I mean, I like both for their own respective merits. But her approach to the solo kind of confirmed for me why I wasn't really disappointed that Prince didn't show. It really gave these artist THEIR time to shine.

Debating someones personal tastes or beliefs is pointless. There is no point to be proven or side which is more or less valid. Some people like the sampler set, some don't. Some think it's art, some don't. Neither is right or wrong because they're just opinions.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

That's who I was replying to. People arguing their opinions like they were one of the 10 Commandments is why so many threads on here just get lost.

It is not just about taste.

I merely mentioned some general points about the whole concept being watered down.

That I don't like this stuff is clear but I did not mention that too many times.

So putting stuff in the 'taste' corner wanting to be left alone w.r.t. this issue is false hope.

If you can't see what a mishmash is when it is right in front of your eyes then that is not my taste problem.

I see a mishmash now. I saw one at the second Viage aftershow in Brussels. (for other reasons)

I've left concerts even before they started so I know what to do when the time is right.

eek Right.... because if one does something for 6 years as a stretch during their tenure as a musician, they can't possibly be a serious musician. Stevie Wonder should stop playing piano. John Coltrane shoulda put down that sax. And Satriani should set down that guitar... Or least they should give these forms of instrumentation and performance a break after a 6 year run. wink

Granted, these are these artists premiere mediums for performance, I don't think that redundancy diminishes artistic merit.

Once again that's your opinion. Not everyone attends every Prince show in a concert run. For everyone who has heard it there's probably several casual fans who haven't. Also MSG wasn't 6 years ago. It was end of 2010 in December.

Comparing samplers to whatever these other people use as instrument is like comparing apples with oranges.

It's weak.
The sampler thing is a gimmick and doing it for 6 years makes it a weak gimmick.

Ok. Let's replace them with musicians playing instruments other than their primary ones. Doesn't change the sentiment dude.

Also, you said his performance makes him "not a serious musician." I'm saying "bullshit." thumbs up!

If it's a gimmick, fine, it's a gimmick.

That doesn't detract from him being a serious musician.

Fact: it is possible to be a serious musician AND do things that are fun for yourself and others such as... Oh I don't know... sampler sets. Because YOU don't like them doesn't mean others do not appreciate and enjoy them.

Keep it gangsta, buddy.

Al gimmick is only a gimmick when it is used as a gimmick.

I.e.: not continuously.

E.g. for the past six years.

I can agree that using it as an occasional gimmick doe snot do anything about the seriousnes of his musicianship.

The bullshit phrase is too weak as it dimisses any context or details about the situation.

much like how the ''not a serious musician phrase'' is too weak because it ''dismisses any context or details.''
moreover, i think it's cool we both agree that he can be a serious musician independent or dependent of gimmicks.
