What really happened between Prince & Tamar?

A lot of time and energy invested for what turned out to be absolutely nothing, anyone know what really happened here?

I don't know, but I was really looking forward to that release. Too bad it never happened.

Prince's 3121 distribution deal with Universal involved a whole lot of promotion and touring that he ended up not doing, so as a result they decided they weren't interested in putting out Tamar's album.

Her Name Is Támar Davis

Mayra Beltran/Houston Chronicle photoMayra Beltran/Houston Chronicle photo

“Sometimes, you just gotta do things on your own,” Támar Davis coos at the beginning of her new album. “No more excuses. Just do it.”

It’s a sentiment the Houston-bred singer now takes to heart after a series of almost-famous moments. Her debut album, My Name is Támar, is out Thursday, a self-financed hybrid of rock, sultry R&B and dance-pop. Davis recorded it while on the road in a pair of Tyler Perry plays, The Marriage Counselor (as the lead) and Madea’s Big Happy Family.

“It’s all me,” Davis says between wardrobe changes inside Klar Boutique, a chic retail space in the Westchase shopping center (off Westheimer). She zips rapidly through black leather dresses, busy white tops and colorful earrings during a photo shoot. (Davis moved back to Houston in 2006 after spending time in Los Angeles.)

“Whatever city we were in, we would record, from Philly to D.C. to New York. We would do it after the show. We would come in at like three in the morning.”

Davis collaborated with a rotating cast of musicians and says she recorded more than 200 songs. The final cut has 14 diverse tracks, including slick singles Heartbeat and Static. Davis even references a popular Perry play film on standout slow-burner All By Myself.

“I definitely did not want it to be a genre-specific album,” she says. “When you start to look at artists like Amy Winehouse, Gnarls Barkley, you hear them everywhere, but they aren’t a specific genre.”

My Name is Támar is a long-time coming for the singer who made a big splash in 2006 — as Prince’s duet partner, no less, on Beautiful, Loved and Blessed. Davis co-wrote the song for Prince’s 3121 disc, and it earned a Grammy nomination for best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocals. She also toured with the Purple One and appeared alongside him on Saturday Night Live.

Davis signed a solo deal and recorded an album, Milk & Honey, but she was dropped from the label, and the disc was never released. She’s spent the last few years working as an independent artist and refocusing her career.

“You never know how those dots are going to connect. Now, it makes sense why I had to do the Prince situation and the Tyler (plays),” she says.

Prior to Prince, Davis was in kiddie outfit Girls Tyme alongside Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and LeToya Luckett. (She left for a solo career, and the group eventually became Destiny’s Child.) Davis graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and earned a music degree from the University of Southern California.)

“Sometimes, we get complacent and we stop because we don’t have certain things. In my heart, something told me, ‘Use what you have and work with that.’ That’s what helped me keep going,” she says.

“The situation with Prince got terminated from Universal Republic, so I was on the road and had nothing but time. I’d see some of my (Perry) castmates go shopping, and I’d think, ‘What do I need to do with my time vs. just sitting around in the hotel until 5 o’clock every day?’”

Davis says she’s spoken to Prince “several times” over the course of the album and still values his input.

I actually sent him the single, (Heartbeat). He immediately responded back and was like, ‘Tamar, this is why I call you my favorite singer,’” she says. “On a scale from 1 to 10, how important it is to get his feedback, I would have to say it’s 10.

“I would say my mom’s is 9, and his is 10.”

It is crap to you do not like RnB which many seem to have issues with on this board.

The songs were solid RnB with the exception of Red Head Step Child and I still think some of this had to do with his divorce and that those songs find a better singer and get some hits.

It seems Universal dropped it and Prince just shrugged, which is weird cuz it could have been released at least digitally or something without any additionnal cost, it's a bit weird Tamar let it go that easily I think. It's not an album I like so much but nonetheless it would have been nice to have it being part of the official Prince canon.

Maybe one day when he opens the vault and we really get "bootlegs 4 daze" lol

I think a lot of things happened at once:

-The troubles between Prince and Universal

-Prince and Tamars relationship dissolved

-She put on a BUNCH of weight and it was going to be tough to market her

I know that last one won't go over easy with a lot of people, but it's the truth and was a factor IMO

That being said I have the album and it's a decent Protege album, but definitely not breaking any new ground. Other people disagree, but I feel the album has a distinct 70's feel to it. I can't exactly put my finger on it. The CD's production sounds a lot like the glossier version of the 3121 disc. It's bogged down by too many religious tracks, and the songs sound vaguely similar. RedHead Stepchild (just like Fury) suffers for not being as good as it's live counterpart. Overall I feel if you take Milk & Honey, Elixer, and SuperConductor and splice the best songs together, you'd end up with one Good protege album.

There is always some kind of drama/nonsense that goes on whenever Prince tries to launch a new protege these days. And even if the album had been released,he would have gotten bored with her and the album, soon thereafter (remember Bria Valente? lol). These 3rdEyeGirls shouldn't get too comfortable, lol

Mani filed 4 divorce from Prince during the height of the 3121 promotion. Prince took it as a sign & put a halt to the whole thing. That is what happen....

Sorry, but it looks like Tamar is sitting beside a wax statue of Prince from Madam Tussauds.
I have always thought it was what KCoolmusiq said, the divorce proceedings started so Prince stopped everything including the Tamar album and 3121 movie release, such a shame really, so much potential!

I got firsthand knowledge of it also from someone that should know. It was similar to what U said. But Eye'm pretty sure the divorce didn'.t help matters. Since Prince didn't want it to happen.

I think its complimentary to say he gets bored. It justifies his behavior by saying its just a side effect of his genius but that isn't it. I would level it to emotional immaturity.

Andy should be taking notes.

I think Andy is still in the picture, wouldn't surprise me if she went to the upcoming Europe festivals etc in the next few months with Prince and co, I think she is a bit more savvy with her music and aspirations.

i don't understand the situation with Prince and Andy. The last time they have been seen together was

that band photo of them. The picture of Prince on the floor and Andy is above him, I like that pic of the band. They are either keeping their relationship on the down low...or just like the others, Andy had her 15 minutes to shine with Prince .
