This version is fine, but the original is far better to my ears. This one has more energy but the sounds are haphazard and less artfully put together

Yeah, it does have a "screwed" and rather dirty and simple character, but I think it fits the song perfectly.

Sounds like he's been experimenting with pitch-correction effects on his vocals (especially in rockier songs, since Boom). There are a couple of instances on both Screwdriver versions where it definitely sounds like he used some kind of autotune.

Can you hear it too?

He turned it off for the last three seconds. That's how he sounds these days. wink

I like this version, but wish it would have finished stronger. It sort of meanders to a close during the last couple of minutes. A tighter edit or a closing guitar solo would have done the version more justice. Also, I miss the "Screwwwww!" yell he does near the end of the original.

Still, a fine alternate version, I like them both.

I agree, as soon as the rave stabs start things turn sour quickly!

man, all that guitar work i wish i had a better recording, it sounds so muffled. I want it to sound like I am there.

I thought the same thing at first, but after a few listens, and comparing it to the regular version (which I also have as a download - iTunes for that one), I don't think it's the quality of the file.

I think it's the mix of the song. It's more raw and less polished. It isn't the bitrate, I think it's the mix. It's mixed in a much more raw way without the same compression and hotness applied to the standard version.

Bingo! smile

I quite liked the original but for me this is far far superior. I find the beginning of the original a bit clunky and weak. This kicks straight into that simple but really addictive riff. For me the song has gone from a 5.5/10 to 8/10. Excellent.

Totally agree! I hate the way the beginning of the original version opens. This mix is confident and rocks the entire time. It's inspired and his delivery doesnt sound phoned in!! LOVE. wink

I like the original but this version is a slight improvement. The guitar sound is funkier and the guitar solo after 90 seconds energizes the song. I'm a little disappointed with the way Prince sings the last verse though, here I prefer the original version.

But what I really like about this remix is how Prince manages to make the last three minutes fun and exciting. There are more than a few examples of songs where he runs out of good ideas towards the end, not so here. It's good rock, it feels experimental, it's funky, and that eccentric sound beginning at 5:16 is one of the coolest sounds on a Prince song in a long time.

I do not understand the majority of you all. The original is embarrassing. THIS version, astonishingly, he's managed to make a dumbed-down track sound astonishingly creative.

This is a spectacular track and i hated the original poppy mess. This one is raw, creative, fusion, longer, PRINCE.

I still dislike the title and catchprase, but everything else he has completely 180º it.

I'm amazed. He did this 180º with one track in the same genre and got opposing sounds, then he drops Breakfast Can Wait as well.....they couldn't be worlds apart and yet they each sound like a master of each craft....just amazing. It's par-for-the-course with Prince, but it still amazes me.

I don't know exactly what it is, but i like this version much better than the 'original'. It's much more fun, relaxed, loose, and funky. Even the techno-ish sounds in the second half sound good, it's so Prince to do that.
So IF there's an album underway, include this version! And the rnrloveaffair rmx7 version too. smile

I like both versions but prefer the remix because it has that raw/live feel to it, nice to see Prince letting Donna take the second solo too!

All the versions have something great. For me the best would be the video version but a minute shorter. Go punk and do a hit n run. The song should be a quick blast of energy, no more than 3.5 minutes. THAT would be a masterpiece.

I agree with 'haphazard'. Bit like his 90s extended material. He never got it wrong during the 80s and he is soooooo close this time. Bit like wanking on drugs.

I like both a great deal. I'm not going to pick favorites. Give me a few days/years.
The prototype sounds more measured, more sweated out, more professionally engineered for an arena or radio near you.
This remix sounds more off the cuff, more after show -- perhaps inspiring himself (on Groundhog Day based on the date tag) to nearly the dizzying heights of his extended genius in the 80s.
I don't remember finding him both this authentically rock and funk on the same track in many years ("Fury" live would come close).
There are certainly several hit-and-miss exceptions cluttered about, but to me most of Prince's greatest music of the past 15 years has been about ballads, jazz infusion, instrumentals and declared religious fervor; very little of it seems to deliver the type of funk or rock edge that could slice see-through tomatoes thin enough to garnish your squirrel meat.
[Cue 50's-styled sci-fi coda and ride the f**king wave.]

This track is worth the $3.52 all by itself, in my opinion. As others have said, the raw vibe of it gives it so much energy...just awesome!

For those in the thread who have said they ordered tracks but didn't get them, check http://3rdeyegirl.com/my-account and see if they are there. thumbs up!

I liked the original, quite a bit. More than any new Prince song since...well, I dunno. Since "3121" maybe? (The song, not the album).

However, since buying the "remix" (which is a silly name for it really, since it's more like a different version than a remix) I can't imagine going back to the original. The new version is just SO damn fun, I can't stop listening to it.

I especially love the last few minutes, which some people seem to dislike ... I think it's fantastic, and silly, and funky, and weird, and absurd, and oh-so-Prince.
