When you listen to music, how much of it is Prince?

I have a quite varied taste in music and like alot of artists, but in my car I've got 60% Prince related CDs.

If you talked to my friends they'd say I listened to him ALL the time!!

How much Prince is too much Prince?

er

I think I've already had too much. I don't listen a lot to his albums any more, because I've heared them so many times already. But when I do, they're still good. Less is more I suppose.

Over the last couple of years 25%.

i've got 22,413 songs active on my itunes and 6565 of them are Prince/Prince related.

not very good at maths but it's about a quarter?

I've also got 5904 funk songs and 774 are James Brown songs (and that's pretty much everything he ever released!)

Probably between 70 - 80% of my music listening time is Prince. Prince fills my CD case except for a couple of other disks. A local progressive FM fills the other 20 - 30% of music time. biggrin music heart

True. Much of it came from tapes. Anybody else miss the thrill of the hunt and actually trading tapes and cds with People? I really do...

currently 30GB of my 160GB iPod is Prince.

Since my iPod is full and I'm always adding music to it

I'm thinking I could free up some space on it if I got a 2nd

iPod and put all of the Prince music on that. It'd be a PrincePod!

iTunes has 8.6 days of Prince material with a total of 30.5 days. I've stopped putting cds to iTunes now. I just play them from the disc. New stereo you see.

Of those 8.6 days of Prince, well let me take a look... well iTunes was reset a few months ago but it says 6.6 days worth have never been played. Still shocking to see that 2.2 days have been spent listening to unique Prince songs. Either that or I left it playing when I went out.

Oh the total number of Prince songs is about two and half thousand. As rdhull (I always picture Rod Hull when I see his name) pointed out, several hundred of those are probably the same song. Or worse, the same song, recorded on a dictaphone in the bathroom from two doors away through three heavy brick walls. I love bootlegs neutral

But how much do I listen? I can have solid Prince days and I can have non-Prince days. Probaby about 25% of my listening time is spent with him on. Too much probably as I could be listening to something new and broadening my musical horizons further. Nothing worse than a rut.

Totally..I sometimes think I am in a bit of a rut, listening not just to Prince but to some dodgy sounding bootlegs with the same songs that I've heard since my teenage years!

It says alot about Prince that you can have such a large proportion of your music dedicated to one artist, but the flip side, as you say, is that you're not broadening your musical horizons by doing so.

Prince covers alot of bases though. If you want speed metal, how about 'Sister' on the Lovesexy tour? Okay, all twenty seconds of it. :-p

About 10%?

That's actually a whole lot considering that I've listened to thousands and thousands of records.

I tend to listen to a few Prince songs pretty much every day. Or play some of his stuff on an instrument while practicing, at the very least. Sometimes I end up just listening to pretty much everything he has released and that takes a lot of time on its own right.

I love the guy's music. shrug

In the last year I think less than 5% of music listening time was devoted to Prince (related) music. I have been listening to a lot of eighties boogie and discofunk music this year, rediscovering kickass tracks from my childhood whilst enjoying unknown cuts in the same style. Also Steely Dan and especially Donald Fagen have been receiving generous portions of listening hours, these guys never cease to amaze me with their music!

In the past there have been years that I would listen up to 60% to Prince music. I guess I kinda lost interest slowly: his old stuff I have heard too much, and the new stuff doesn't do much to excite me.

Oh well, that's just the way things go... wink

For many, many years my music has exclusively been Prince and Prince related. Then there was a period of about a two years where I really cut it down. I've picked some of it back up again, so now I'd say about 20% of my music is Prince/related. In the last year, I've really started to like new age music. I just downloaded a CD by Karunesh that I really love. I listen to my Zen channel on DirecTV every night. I also listen to a lot of Christian music too.

I am past the state where I am horrified about it. I think in the last year I have finally accepted that the flamboyant, megatalented Prince we know from the eighties will probably never again make music as funky, sexy, exciting and leftfield as back then.

I am glad though to have recently found all that early to mid eighties soul and (electro)funk music, this definately fills the "gap" for me!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

The 80s stuff I tend not to listen to as I've heard it enough. I'm more likely to pull out some stuff from the 90s & 00s though. I'm more likely to listen to Prince when my fella comes over as he an ex-orger and wants to listen a lot of Prince boots/mixes more than me! eek So about 15% Prince and the rest other artists.

The Prince stuff I go for always is things like The Rainbow Children and Lotusflower. I listen to the downloaded Lotusflower a lot from beginning to end, its a really great album I wished he promoted it more every track on that is fits nicely, love it.

Not so much lately, simply because there had been no official new album to listen to in 2 years (I don't have Superconductor yet, but I will soon). Non-album songs and new outtakes are another matter entirely: I am an album guy so I won't listen to them as much as I'd listen to a new album.

The past albums I know them all by heart so I'll only listen to them once in a while, I need new stuff, which I find with other artists. I have several thousands of albums, Prince is only a small part of it by now. He's still my favorite, though: there's such a history between us by now smile

When it's my choice (not a radio in background) almost exclusively.... There's so much I'm still discovering and so much I haven't discovered yet. And I've been into him for more than 20 years now! He has a vibe for every mood and I just can't get enough.
