This. His worst music is better than the cookie-cutter stuff that's coming out. People complain over and over on this site about how they need new Prince music. People post this almost every day on various forums, and when a new song comes out, they complain. Enjoy the new song- or don't- but appreciate the fact that he's releasing something of better quality than the Top 40 we're fed now.

Symphonies and operas also sound better than what's in the top 40 these days but that still doesn't mean that symphonies and operas aren't boring. They're still boring, they're just not boring as top 40 these days.

But still better.

Let me put it this way:

If some other guy had written "Take Me With U" and then sued Prince, alleging "RandR Love Affair" was a ripoff of "Take Me With U", that guy would not only lose his case but it would probably be thrown out of court within days of its filing.

Easily his best track since "Guitar"

I don't know if that's a good think or a bad thing but I agree with it. Huge step in the right direction after LotusFailur3 and 20ten. I actually played this in the car for a friend of mine who hates Prince and he said "ehhh that one wasn't so bad"

and that sort of sums it up for me. "Eh, that wasn't bad" Not his greatest. Not breaking any new ground, but it gives me hope there could be an album on par with 3121 cooking up somewhere in Prince world. Also, if the material on Superconductor sounds like RnRLA it'll be the first decent Protege album Prince has put together in almost 2 decades.

This song gives me hope.

er

Took this song on the road 2day- sounds mega pumping on my car stereo!! It sure is a driving song indeed. Problem came when I had 2 use the clutch 2 change gear, cuz my foot had 2 momentarily stop thumping to the beat! Ha ha

Then the penny dropped & I got the title. Not only does RnR Affair refer 2 Rock'n Roll, but thinking Prince language, it's also Our n Our Affair! biggrin

Can't describe how much I am loving this track, just more & more!

Where do you guys hear synth horns?

I think those are either samples or played by a real horn section that's processed too much so that it sounds sort of inauthentic. Doesn't sound like there's any real synthesis involved with them. They're certainly not the type of synth horns that Prince used on his 70s and 80s records (and later on as a reference to his earlier output on a few occasions).

The Good:

-Cool lyrics that are telling a story and seem to be genuine, inspired, and not forced. That's a pretty big hurdle for the Prince of today, so bravo to that!

The Bad:

-Biting the Take Me With U synth line

-The production sounds cheap. The synths are retro, yet they have no punch the way they did when they weren't retro. They just seem too light and pretty corny, a la So Far So Pleased and The One U Wanna C.

-I've noticed his voice kind of showing some wear in the last few albums and this song really shows it. I realize it's partially an affectation he's doing, but it also sounds like a guy who's getting old which makes me sad. Prince is supposed to stay young forever, damn it!

I guess it would be a "nay" for me but I don't hate it or anything. Just slightly disappointed. Not as disappointed as I was when I saw his ass on The View this morning though.

eek

WHAT.WAS.HE.WEARRRING!!?!?!?! And that WIG!!! WTF?! This guy has always had some wtf moments with his various looks. But I can't think of a time in the recent past where I was truly embarrassed for the guy soley based on his look. Lopez wasn't THAT long ago and he looked great! EEK! He better slap everyone he knows and calls a friend who told him "yea that looks good, dude. wear it."

that was his real hair in its natural state

So you find this song better than anything on Lotusflower, MPLSound, Elixer, and 20Ten? I think the song is fine and but it really speaks to the variety of tastes if you feel this trumps all of that varied music. I can name at least 10 songs from those works that move me more.

I think in a way that Prince fans always sell Prince short because he is so talented and varied that so many different tastes expect to be fulfilled by his output. Its quite a (pleasant) burdan for him to have to bare.

I hope the next record is full of lyrics like these. They're so thoughtful and sweet. I especially like, "That's when stars collide. When the space for what you want in your heart is open wide." Love that. And I love that even after so many loves and loves lost, he still keeps his heart open. It's not an easy thing to do. Also, I wonder if his vocals would sound better with a little more high end or reverb or something. I want them to be brighter and less dry.

Hmm...Isn't "When Stars Collide" a song on Andy's new album? Maybe this song is an ode to Andy or maybe he's just wants us to think that, so we can generate more buzz? hmmm

It's a simple song and yet nuanced and I like the arrangement. The song borrows from Take Me With U but also stands on its own.

The double meaning in these lyrics are clever:
and if there's some room I'd like to sit at your table
she said "it's tight, but I think I can fit you in"

I'll start by saying I've not heard the song, being in the UK and at work.

However, the most alarming thing for me about this news is - and apoligies if this has already been covered - the fact that P has decided to release the track exclusively through Clear Channel owned radio stations?

Is anyone else aware of the monopoly and influence Clear Channel has over the promotion and consumption of recorded and live music in the USA?

Aaaaaah that's right y'all!

I said the same thing yesterday. 'When Stars Collide' is one of the songs on Andy's album. Now hearing Prince's song yesterday and that line in it, pretty much gives insight to the meaning of 'When Stars Collide' as if to say, the stars representing when two people meet and become friends whether that means friendship or a relationship.

You question "whether that means friendship or a relationship"?

it's obvious from the rest of the song, it's about "stars colliding" into a sexual relationship.

and while the new song isn't exactly a "rip-off" of "Take Me With U," there's hints of it in there, which is also no coincidence, I think. He and Allo sang "Take Me With U" on tour last summer.

He just doesn't talk about such things, in interviews or on twitter or FB (he said on The View that he does not have twitter or FB), he doesn't say yes or no, but that doesn't mean he's playing "mind games" or that he's just trying to create buzz (who's buzzing about Prince dating Andy? he's no Brangelina, nobody cares) - it's quite clear that they are together. But he doesn't kiss and tell - he sings.

The song itself is kinda bland for me, but many of his songs do have a tendency to grow on me, so maybe it'll take more listens?

Anyway, it was nice to hear the song several times yesterday on the radio, top of each hour, on 103.5 in Los Angeles. It seemed there are some more Prince in general on the radio yesterday - I also caught 1999 and WDC.

Yeah, ok, anyway, what I took from that line 'stars colliding' is the stars representing two people (in the song's case) and 'colliding' referencing, i.e., both becoming one, a union, whether in friendship or a relationship, either or. But thanks for your interpretation of it. Anyway, about the song, different strokes for different folks, and different meanings for many. thumbs up! smile

Just heard it for the first time, I think it's alright, I think it will be better when or if it get's played live. Enjoying the lyrics. I never understand people moaning about the production, I don't think Prince has ever been a great producer. A great songwriter and a great musician yes but I don't think he pays that much attention to the production side of things.
Interviewer: What's it like to be the greatest guitarist in the world?
Clapton: I don't know, you'd better ask Prince

that's interesting. I so disagree with this. Its hard to hear songs like Dreamer, Boom, Colonized Mind, and intro and outro of the LotusFlower cd to be a black hole of creativity, I normally hear that on the radio. I like the new song alot but its no more refreshing than songs from LotusFlowr. We all have such different in music.

If Prince released a recording of his farts and burps most of you here would still deem it a masterpiece.

If this wasn't sung by Prince I wonder how many of you would care to give it a second listen.

It doesn't matter what it sounds like, is it Prince? Then it's soooooooooooo good...

Bah!! One could say the same about the last Muse single or any other artists...

Would U have been interrested in the last U2 if it wasn´t played and sung by U2?? probably not because a lot of people like Bono´s voice and The Edge´s guitar playing!

So..excuse me but I like prince´s voice and his way of playing music confused

Well here we go again. Prince has dropped another hot mess of a track onto our defenseless earholes. At least this one is sorta' good. It's better than 90% of the last 15 years of releases. However, it's still too lyricaly jehovah's witness-speaky. He never did quite figure out which vocal register to use. The scream was a pure FAIL. WTF, Prince can't even scream in a song anymore without messing that up? I like the beat. I like everything about the music itself enough not to nitpick. It's just Prince's vocals and some (not all) of the lyrics that just turn me off on the song.
