Although I've never heard of John 5 (I assume he's better than Johns 1 - 4, but he'll never be better than John 3:16), you could put ANY guitarist's name in his place and your thread title would still be 100% correct!

John 5 is/was the guitarist for Marilyn Manson.

lol

He's a bit over the top. Has his own telecaster, which is very ugly (just look at the headstock)

Like xtraloveable said, prince don't need no other lead guitar player.

eek really, not saying because I don't know him, he's not good, but hard to believe a guy very few have heard of would upstage someone with lots of epic guitar solos (RRHOF for starters). unless u mean upstage with non-music related ANTICS, he does run with Manson so....

Ex Marilyn Manson guitarist, he´s now playing for Rob Zombie.

He´s one of those very technical guitarists.

I disagree I think Prince does need a guitarist, but I´m not saying that this would be the guy.

John 5 is amazing but I couldn't see him working with P. His counrty-metal vibe to me would clash.

Now cats like Nuno, Vernon Reid, Steve Vai and Ty Tabor (King's X)..I could see them doing guest solo's on a P record.

The thing is no one works with Prince. Prince tells them exactly what to play and how to play it. A small club jam is not going to happen either. Prince always wants to be the star at his gigs. Even Mike Scott ripped Prince a new one on a few occasions.

That may be true, but I did read that Steve Vai was invited to jam with P (in 89 or 90) and Vai had nothing but praise and respect. He said he had a blast and wrote "The Animal" as a tribute to

Prince.

Vernon Reid said the same when he jammed with P at a 1994 NYC show at the old Palladium. I also remember reading in Circus magazine (in 89 or 90) that Living Colour and Jon Bon Jovi

were invited (and went) to Paisley and sat in on some aftershow jam sessions.

We all know P is a control freak, but I think over the years he's loosened up a little bit. I think he's OK with sharing the stage jamming w/ a musical guest.

People on THIS website may have never heard of guitarist John 5, but it the current rock world, John 5 is a really big deal.

He's THE gun for hire if you want guitar parts played on your record, and played well, and he plays everything from bluegrass to metal, and everything in between. He has 6 fully instrumental solo albums and has his own signature Telecaster with extended headstock. I know someone already posted that his guitar is ugly because of the headstock, but it's extra wide so he can play behind the nut a lot easier, which is something of a trademark for him.

Big names that he has worked with in the past were Lita Ford when she opened for KISS, k.d. Lang, David Lee Roth, and Rob Halford in industrial metal band 2wo, and he is currently the guitarist for Rob Zombie. His biggest claim to fame though I think was being the guitar player for Marilyn Manson from 1998-2003. It was Manson who gave him the stage name John 5, the name he still uses to this day. Before that, he was credited by his real name, John Lowery.

He's a pretty interesting guy. I think I heard he recently just did some guitar tracks for Ricky Martin of all people, so that just goes to show you he can whip up some Latin/flamenco licks if he wanted to as well.

Check out this interview I found on YouTube of him. If you don't know who he is, after watching this interview, you will.

He also did an AMAZING guitar cover of GNR's "Welcome To The Jungle". If you have the time to look for that, it's well worth it.

John 5 is one of the best guitarists in the current rock world and many people have heard of him, just not this website. This is a fansite for Prince, so I would imagine there are a lot of rhythm and blues and jazz lovers on here. But I'm 24 years old, I play guitar among other things, I fucking love, love Prince but at the same time I listen to punk and metal and industrial and just heavy music and I think THAT demographic on this website is slim. So maybe that's why people here have never heard of him. John 5 is actually known for his soloing, and even guitar virtuosos like Steve Vai give him all the credit he deserves. Just because he used to play for Marilyn Manson, with all the costumes and everything does not take away from his ability to shred.

Check out this little clip:

Maybe you should check out that interview I posted on my last post as well. I've actually met him at a guitar clinic he was doing 3 years ago in my city and he's one of the most humble, down to earth people you will ever meet. Extremely nice guy, and despite being in Manson, he doesn't do drugs or alcohol (actually the reason he was fired from Manson).

Just listened to his stuff. He's a virtuoso that's for sure. Now I can put a face to the music on all the extreme sports clips on tv

John 5 is flashy, over the top, and all over the place on his own stuff. but hes also a pro and does many things, he knows when to play crazy and when not to. he could back prince all day and never step on his space.

That's absolutely true! Playing rhythm for k.d. Lang and lead for Manson or Zombie I would imagine would not be the same thing at all. He definitely seems to know that there is a time and a place for evrything, he knows when to show off, and when to just step back. It'd kind of be a weird collaboration in my mind though, a bit like apples and oranges. I really couldn't picture it.

That would be amazing! John 5 is actually one of my all time favorite guitarists.

He like prince belnds genres... There is songs where John does finger pickin blue grass, heavy metal, blues & Slow jam all in one song. He is a beast at guitar... i think him & Prince are about even. I don't think he would totally destroy him live.

I think nowadays though Prince holds back. I mean, I've showed friends how good he is in videos and whatnot, most people don't even know he plays... (from Bob George) "That skinny motherfucker with the high voice?" But I know Prince can shred, I just think he could do a little more with it, you know what I mean?

Oh for sure! i still think Prince holds back a lot of his shredding potential for behind closed doors.
