Prince rarely made any TV appearances in his hey days because he refused 2 b interviewed. Solid Gold was perfect 4 him. Because they didn't require an interview. But it added 2 his mystic. Plus Prince would have NEVER let Don interview him. Which is why he only appeared on as guest host Holly Robinson...

Yeah, after he was done with the enigma issues of the 80's...with AB he was just starting to do his thing and the "dont speak" came the year after..this may seem like a plea-coppage but it seems ..seems..like it could be partly true?

Anybody believe this?

I can't hardly tell what his agenda was besides looking for a crossover audience with why he refused to talk to Don. But Don even thought his actions on AB was something he didn't wanna entertain either. Just think you're the host of a show and you try to interview someone who appears to be evading you like he's some little kid that don't know what to say.

The Minnesota Black Music Awards was first held on May 12, 1982 at the historic Prom Center in St .Paul Minnesota. From 1982-1999 over 50,000 music patrons attended the MBMA program. After a 12-year hiatus, Mint Condition will headline the return of Minnesota Black Music Awards July 16th 8pm at the Pantages Theatre. The highlight of the 2010 MBMA is a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the artists and music of the famed Minneapolis Sound. Like popular Black music centers before them Motown, Philly Sound, Memphis Rhythm & Blues, the Minneapolis Sound rocketed into music stardom with Prince and a secession of artist who created a unique style in contemporary music enjoyed and emulated worldwide. The MBMA is considered the upper-Midwest premiere stage for Black music recognition and super-star performances.

Major artist from the Twin Cities who have performed or participate with the awards program include Prince, Rockie Robbins, Morris Day & The Time, Alexander O’Neal, Marzarati, The Jets, Jam and Lewis, Next, Ann Nesby, Sounds of Blackness, The Steeles, Excelsior Chorale, Bobby Lyle, Cherelle, Janet Jackson, The Girlz, Andre’ Cymone, St.Paul Peterson, IRM Crew, Big Walter Smith, Jack McDuff, world beat group Ipso Facto, Mazarati, Jesse Johnson, Shelia E., Herb Alpert and many others.

Before R&R started to flourish, the musical evolution had already been going on for centuries worldwide by all types of races.

In the US, some of the earlier genres were blues, gospel, ragtime, early jazz and country music. In Europe there were the classical composers,

and in much more other countries worlwide evolved their traditional music to what it is today.

The question was a valid one. Soul Train without Don Cornelius was not the same show. It was a different show with the same hame.

Don Cornelius always creeped me out as a kid....maybe Prince was creeped out too and wanted nothing to do with it.

Or more likely, he didn't consider himself a "black" act, so didn't want to be on that show if it would diminish his crossover appeal.

Nicely said.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

It's also worth noting Don was an iconically, unapologetically black figure.

If it's the case Prince was chasing crossover $, Don was one of the last people he wanted asking him questions.

Apparently Don DID invite him and he didn't accept at the time... I can believe that story that he felt Soul Train "only played one type of genre" but that in of itself is inaccurate because ST did have crossover acts like Ike & Tina Turner, Little Richard and Chuck Berry on their show so it ain't like having Prince on there would've been a wild thing. Parliament-Funkadelic had a wilder image.

moreover, war, the average white band, elton john and david bowie were all on soul train b/c they had songs that had crossed over to the 'black' charts, particularly in the case of awb.

the ohio players and the isleys who had a guitar-based, 'rock' sound to some of their songs played soul train all the time, so this idea that black people wouldn't relate to prince is off-base.

i was in junior high when prince came on the scene and who does he think his audience was if it wasn't black folks? all my friends had a crush on that fine dude with the big afro!

i have no idea why he would turn down soul train; it was, for its time, the hippest trip in america.

rip, don sad

Prince didn't do shows where he had to do an interview. After American Bandstand. That was it. It had nothing to do with Soul Train being too black for him That is a lie and an insult to Prince. I hate when people say Prince didn't want to be black. Yes he wanted a crossover audience. But what black artist didn't want one? It means they can make even more money. People here saying he didn't want to black is more ur problem then his.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Yes it does. Because the music business is cut throat. Everyone is always out for themselves. That is why most groups never stay together. I mean look at what went on with Jesse Johnson & The 07 reunion. Egos get in the way when its too much talent in one group. The Time wouldn't have never worked with Alex as lead singer anyway.. So he needs to....stfu

Have you evver read Dave Hill's A Pop Life?.

In it are several statements by Dez of how they wanted to reach a whiter rockier audience. I mean sometimes reading the statements kind of turned my stomach with how Dez was all gaga over the issue of the crossover.

Every black artist & the record labels in the 80's wanted to crossover to a broader audience. It was not unheard of. That meant more money. Only a few black artist were able to do that back then. Prince was one of them & MJ & Lionel Richie. Yes of course I read "A Pop Life" its part of my memorabilia ....Why that turned ur stomach is beyond me eek

It's one thing if you wanna do cross over and still stick to your black audience, it's another to deliberately wanna cross over while your black audience goes the other way.
