I have to be honest, I haven't listened to the remixes yet other than the "Icon mix" which wasn't too bad. I wouldn't say it was the most amazing Prince remix but it certainly wasn't horrible either.

As far as I know, it has something to do with the adhesive used to bond both sides of the picture disc that discolors over time.
