I find myself mesmerized by 'Tangerine'! AS I just wrote on another thread, it's just my favorite from the album! The extended version is where it is!! smile

Well, this has been quite an informative thread! Found out a few new things.

Not too surprising that I wouldn't know that much about this era, though, because this is around when I stopped paying attention to him, so this era to 2004 is kind of a black hole. Org has been helpful for filling in the holes. Thanks.

At risk of being called naive....am I the only fan who heard "Greatest Romance Never Sold" and then surprised to learn afterwards that it actually flopped as a mainstream single?

I'm not surprised it flopped, it's was a midtempo single, it didn't get the best promotion, and it was Prince (an aging* "pop star" who only had 3 huge hits that decade). I love the song, though - it's definitely my favorite on the album. I love the melody, instrumentation and singing, but it never struck me as a song that would be a huge hit. It did reach #63 on the US Hot 100, and #23 on the US R&B charts - not too bad.

Yeah I love that photo, something interesting about Prince in nature photos, like the Kid & Apollonia in a barn with hay and horse or in the country side. It works for some reason

I like Prince blue outfit and his outfit like different from the other musician.

I need to collect more of Prince music CDs.

I have always loved this song "The Greatest Romance", imo the best song on the album and I love the extended 8 minutes version from Rave IN2 a lot...

this song combines "The Most Beautiful Girl" and "7".. 2 other Prince song I love very much.

So OF4S..... let us disagree here.. biggrin

it's ok, lol cause I just realized I keep getting that song mixed up with the Most Beautiful Girl..(this is the one I don't care for)

My fav on this album is Tangerine

Here U go

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold

The greatest romance that's ever been sold
So whatdya know, U and me
Finally face 2 face
Checkin' each other up and down
In all of the obvious places
Was there ever a reason
4 us 2 be apart
The air that fills up this room says "not hardly"
So this is where U end
And U and I begin (This is where U and I, U and I begin)

CHORUS:
The greatest romance that's ever been sold
The greatest romance that's ever been sold

Baby, baby
Now your mind is open
2 poetry seldom heard
Your heart has never been broken
Until U've heard these words:
"Your body was designed 2 respond 2 mine
In spite of your desire 2 mold me"
And in the middle of it all
We kiss and like rain we fall into... (Like rain, we fall)

CHORUS
(Oh baby, oh baby, baby)

Oh, I know U feel me, I know that U can dance (Help)
But what do U know about the greatest romance?
Not what U think, but what U believe (Tell me)
What was the real reason that Adam never left Eve
And if the truth sounds like a memory
Then U know it was meant 2 be, meant 2 be (Meant 2 be)
Leave your inhibitions behind
Come on, come on, let's see (What? Why)

So this is where U end (This is where U end)
And U and I begin (U...)

CHORUS
(Uh huh uh huh)

I know U can feel me, I know U can dance (I know)
But what do U know about the greatest romance?
(The greatest romance that's ever been sold)
Not what U think, but what U believe
Can U tell me the real reason that Adam never left Eve
(The greatest romance that's ever been sold) (Greatest romance)
Listen 2 me, uh, U brought me the grapes from the vine, oh, yes U did
(The greatest romance that's ever been sold)

Can I talk 2 U? (Talk 2 U)
Listen, U help me 2 remember the secrets of time
And U, U, U, U offer me your love, your love, your love so divine
And in return girl and in return I will surrender
Aw yeah, I will surrender, oh yes I will

The greatest romance that's ever been sold

Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince

chapt 18

Comeback

pg 236

Arista released Rave on November 9,1999, and Prince continued to throw himself into promotion of the project, planning a mini-tour of the United States and a video shoot for "the Greatest Romance Ever Sold."

Davis superiors at Bertelsmann had other ideas, though, and insisted that early promotion focus on European markets, a decision driven by the presence of the company's headquarters in Germany. Prince resisted, arguing to Davis that the U.S. market was crucial and that European appearances would delay the video shoot. But Davis had no real choice, and Prince reluctantly sat for interviews on television shows throught Europe.

These, and his visits to American programs such as the Today Show, were brief, stilted affairs that did little to stir enthusiasm for the album. Larry Graham was a distracting presence during many of the interviews, as Prince wasted valuable promotional time lauding his friend.

"This is the best bass player I've ever had," Prince said when Graham joined him on the Swedish show OP Reis. "Larry is as important as anyone, anywhere, anytime."

The song was ok, but it was the video that got me thinking...ugh. Not, because there was anything wrong with the production, I just didn't like that he let her fall like that. Classic Prince, wooing some poor emotionally-defenseless young woman until she completely falls for him and then just turning his back on her and walking away. lol lol lol I know...get over it and I was, until I saw it here. mad mad

Oh, but he didn't have some of his "sexiest" moment in this era. Something about that "Messiah" look!!!!!

While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in early 1999 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. The Hornheadz recorded horn overdubs for the track on 17 May, 1999 at Paisley Park Studios (during the same session as horn overdubs for Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This?, Man'O'War, I Ain't Gonna Run and R U Ready?). Eve's rap was overdubbed in mid-September, 1999, at Electric Lady Studios, New York, NY, USA (during the same set of sessions as her rap overdub for The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (The Adam & Eve Remix)). The Nasty Girl remix was likely recorded in late 1999 at Paisley Park Studios, but this is unconfirmed.

In Summer, 2000, a 12" maxi-single titled The Hot X-perience was promoted on NPGOnlineLtd.com, containing several remixes of Hot Wit U, including Underneath The Cream, which originated during the remix sessions from a lyric from Hot Wit U. A video of Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) was shown online, but the single was left unreleased.

Hot wit U

I wanna get hot wit U
Get U underneath the cream and ooh
Get U doin' things U thought U'd never do
Make U suck your tongue and say, "Ooh!"
I wanna get hot wit U
Take U upstairs 2 the 14th room
Multicolored lights and an ocean view
Ooh, I wanna get hot wit U

I wanna get hot wit U, I wanna get hot wit U {x2}
I want 2 get hot with U
I wanna get U underneath the cream and do the marshmallow
Ooh I wanna get hot with U
I wanna get U 2 do something
U thought U'd never do
Like dance in front of my headlights
On a hot summer night - nude
I wanna get hot with U

CHORUS

I want 2 get hot with U
I wanna make U climb this chain around my waist so I can prove
That I'm the only one that brings out the freak in U
I want 2 get hot with U

I wanna get hot wit U, I wanna get hot wit U {x2}
Know the body bangin', got U singin'
No shouts from the neighbors, telephone ringin'
Put me in positions thought I'd never do proper
Created a machine, now U know U can't stop her
Tryin' 2 turn me out, it never happen, so stop this
I'm suppose 2 tremble cuz they call U "The Artist"?
Let's wild out - can U handle ruff ridin'?
Treat U like the freak of the week and had U hidin' from me
I'd do whatever U like if U could take it
If I could be your girlfriend, U could catch me naked
Can't front sexually, I'd like a sample
But I don't think that I'm ready 4 U 2 make me an example
I mean - come on - why front on
I'd never place time - queen of your life
I'm there, whenever
The things that U're feeling 4 me - mutual
But I'm ready 2 call U daddy, even get hot wit U

Meet me early morning (Meet me in the morning, baby)
In a 4th dimension plane (In a 4th dimension plane)
Astral travelin' hottie, (Hottie hottie) I know U know my game
Underneath the cream I'll meet U (I'll U meet down there)
And then we'll rearrange (Turn the child 'round)
Everything U know of love (Everything)
I'll give U reason 2 change

Hot wit U, I wanna get hot wit U (Wanna wanna)
I wanna get hot wit U (I wanna get)

I want 2 get hot with U
I wanna steal a kiss in the middle of an overcrowded room
Yeah, that's what I wanna do
I, I wanna get hot with U
Hot with U, boo

CHORUS

(Hot wit U) repeated

So we could drive 2 the ocean
And drown U in a wave of 100,000 compliments, boo
I want your everyday 2 be cool
And the only way 2 do that is every night - get hot, get hot with U
Yeah, baby

CHORUS
(Never never)
(Oh, baby)
(Can't U see it?)

Hot wit U (Yeah) I wanna get hot wit U
I wanna get hot wit U
Get U underneath the cream and ooh
Get ya doing things U thought U'd never do
Make U suck your tongue and say "ooh"
Ooh, I wanna get hot wit U

Wanna get hot wit U

This is why this era is so weird to me: I absolutely LOOOOVE his look (minus any pic where he's wearing plats or braids) during this time, but the music was absolute SHIT!!! I wish he'd grow his hair long again because there are several things he can do with it, but we all know that his JW beliefs won't allow that, unfortunately.

He's been rockin' the same usual look for about 10 years now. Is this to make up for changing his look for virtually every year of his career up until about 2002? Ugh.

Rave was the WORST era!! Well the 1999 New Masters & Rave!!!

But the good thing is he learned allot from it, when the industry came back around in 2004! He knew they would want a 1984 remembering and he was ready - he learned from all his mistakes from 1999-2000... and he made a TON of money! Pretty much since 2004 he has made more in his career then anytime in the past!

$90 million tour

$5 million gigs

$1 million per show gigs

#1,2 or #3 albums

Quick tours which make huge money

He learned allot from that Rave era.

It's from an in-studio scene from the Rave dvd. He was playing something that sounded like Gamillah if I'm remembering correctly.
