Sign of The Times should have been the immediate follow up to Purple Rain.

As it was,If released in late 1985 or early 1986,The look, feel and sound of Sign of The Times would have kept the Purple Rain momentum going. And Prince would have been able to bring that incredible stage show to the United States.Think about the subject matter of the title track and the then recent death of Actor Rock Hudson or the later explosion of the Challenger. That would have hit right home!Add the recent collaberation with Sheena Easton "Sugar Walls" in 1984 followed right by "U Got the Look" in 85 or 86 and you have Prince destroying the Pop,R&B,Rock Charts.Prince could have kept both his white and black audience with the material on SOTT.With Revolution Members and the SOTT live band onstage it would have been total World Domination. The SOTT concert film would hav been icing on the cake for the fans who missed the sold out SOTT World Tour or fans who wanted to relive it again onscreen.Prince's SOTT look was almost identical to his Purple Rain look.

After that Prince could have taken a year or two off and came back with a Greatest Hits studio album or a Greatest Hits live album with some bonus "Vault Tracks" on it.Imagine Prince's shining moment Purple Rain sandwiched between to classic double albums 1999 and Sign of the Times.ATWIAD and Parade probably would have never happened in their completed forms and UTCM might not have happened either.

I kind of see where he is going with this (maybe Im daft like he is lol). Because I expected a longgg wait before he would reelase something after Purple Rain. And when that wasn't the case, I was all "this is what you give us as a followup to Rain? Man, you should have waited and took your time."

Granted, of course we wouldnt have songs like Kiss, Condition etc. But at the time, to me, they did not have the power of the Purple Rain songs. It was as if he was regressing imo.

The response at that time to those two albums were "What the F is Prince thinking?" I'm telling you this from memory. After those two records and UTCM Prince became a joke in the United States.

I am a Prince fan since the age of 9,I am now 42 years old.And yes those songs on SOTT were recorded between 1985 and 1986.Some were older than that.

it would have been great if the performances from SOTT were used in an actual sequel to Purple Rain. You know....he gts from outta MPLS and becomes a huge star doing big arenas but an actuall narrative is built around it.

This is still kind of a weird scenario. He MAYBE would have kept a large American audience, but then in your plan, he wouldn't have released very much, so it's kind of like a tree falling in the forest kind of scenario. And really, is a large American audience all that important anyway?

If you do Sign after Purple Rain (which, by the way, couldn't happen until after Challenger exploded, unless you eliminate or significantly change the title track, because otherwise you're creating a paradox in the time-space continuum and I don't like that), and then wait a couple years and release a greatest hits, well, you've pretty much revised the entire '80s for Prince. So even if he does have a larger audience, he's not giving them very much to listen to. So maybe they drift away for that reason.

Your memory sucks.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

So my memory sucks.Hmm.Anyway why wouldn't having a huge American audience be a big deal when it was his American audience that put Prince over the top and supported him when he was virtually unknown out side the U.S. or Minneapolis for that matter.ATWIAD alienated both Prince's R&B and Rock/Pop Fans, especially in the African American Community. It was like "After the steady upward trajectory of For You,Prince, Dirty Mind,Controversy,1999,Purple Rain where Prince seemed to outdo himself with each new album. The response to ATWIAD was "What's this Psychadelic s**t!" It was too eclectic for Funk Music fans and too soft for Rock Music fans.Prince seriously fell off in Public Opinion and Prince's Black fans moved on to Hip Hop and Prince's White fans moved on to Madonna,George Michael,Bon Jovi.

Sad but true.Prince was seen as a sell out and he never regained his audience and core fanbase after that.

How can you be a sellout when you're losing both your new and your old audience?

Because Around the World in a Day was seen as a giant middle finger to fans who had supported Prince since 1978 and those who had become Prince fans after Dirty Mind,Controversy,1999 and Purple Rain.It was like if Elvis Presley suddenly decided to release an Opera album after years of straight Rock and Roll, James Brown singing Classical Music after building a loyal, hardcore Funk audience over the years,Or Jimi Hendrix releasing a Country/Western album.Imagine The Who or U2 unexpectedly releasing a Hip Hop CD nowadays. That's what ATWIAD felt like when it was released in 1985 after being the much awaited follow up to the Purple Rain
Phenomenon.SOTT would have met or exceeded the expectations of Prince fans old and new.It was a matter of timing. If ATWIAD had been released after 1999 and before Purple Rain history might have been a liitle different for Prince in the United States post Purple Rain Mania. [Edited 11/14/11 19:46pm]

Prince was always experimental and was not going to sell out and change that about himself after Purple Rain. If you didn't like it, that says more about you than Prince. I happen to like it way more than Purple Rain, Parade and Sign O The Times. It was the perfect follow up, and the promotional tactics are what messed up the era, not the music IMO.

So what exactly does that say about me as a Prince fan since 1979?That I'm supposed swallow every piece of s**t that he puts out just because his name is attached to it?Is that what a 'True" fan does?

You could argue I'm not a "true" fan, cause I don't own every Prince album and don't plan to either. I bought Around The World In A Day cause I loved what I heard, but there are other albums of his that sound like shit though I respect him for not following the crowd and doing what he wants musically. That's what good artists do.

You don't have to tell me about Prince being experimental. That was part of why his music appealed to me.But experimental doesn't always equate to "Good" Purple Rain was experimental,So was 1999,Controversy,Dirty Mind,Prince,For You.The difference is those albums contained great innovative music.I can't say the same for ATWIAD which was Prince's attempt to recreate a 1960s Psychadelic Era and Sound of which he was never a part of in the first place. It was a retread of an Era long gone by.

I'm not questioning you as a fan.I am saying that Prince royally screwed up when he released ATWIAD at the time that he did.I respected him for not following the crowd in his younger years,Though he ended up doing that exact thing from the 1990s onward.

Something was going well for him when he did that in the 80's. About the 90's, I'm not so sure. It's an acquired taste for sure and for years I was saying that with the exception of a few tracks, I didn't like his 90's stuff from what I knew, but since joining the boards, I have found some songs and albums that I like, so I don't completely dislike his 90's catalogue, there was just something awesome about it from For You through Diamonds & Pearls. After that, it was hit and miss with the songs though the ones I was feeling were very strong, and he did well with Musicology & 3121.

Diamonds and Pearls was a delight.I think The Gold Experience is one of the best and most coherent records he's ever done. But TGE is grossly underrated.

Funny you brought it up, I'm listening to some tracks off Diamonds and Pearls tonight. I recently began to appreciate some of The Gold Experience as well awhile back. I LOVE Gold, I sort of feel like it speaks to me right now and where I'm at in life. We March and Billy Jack Bitch are also good. I remember seeing Pussy Control performed on vh1 a lifetime ago and rediscovered it this year.

OP.... I Disagree completely. I was 15 yrs old when ATWIAD came out. I was honestly shocked when that album was released. It was nothing like ANYTHING Prince had done before, BUT that's why he has such a huge fanbase & as much respect in the music community as he does today..

A commercial, Top 40 album would have been easy & predictable following Purple Rain. Look at the unreleased songs during that era... However, Prince was experimenting & kept people guessing.

SOTT was great, but you can't just remove ATWIAD & Parade from the progression.... Doesn't work.

"Raspberry Beret" was a #2 hit in the U.S. It was the first record I bought (being 12 at the time) and the one that turned me on to Prince. "Kiss" was a #1 hit in the U.S. As for the albums, ATWIAD reached #1 in the U.S. and Parade reached #3. SOTT the album only reached #6 in the Billboard 200, although "U Got The Look," the highest-charting U.S. single from SOTT, made it to #2. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" only made it to #67.

SOTT was a critical success, but the two preceding albums were very successful on the charts. So, no, I don't think he should have waited three years to release a followup to Purple Rain.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

I've always considered SOTT to be the 'real follow-up' to Purple Rain. The two previous albums were too quirky (not necesarily in a bad way) to be considered proper follow-ups.
