You would feel totally different about that track if you had heard him do it live in Vegas, at a 75-person aftershow, with Sheila on timbales. shrug

As for The Dance, I've always preferred the version on The Chocolate Invasion. That one's vulnerable and amazing. The one on 3121 is bitter and overwrought.

OMG, is The Dance that hilarious song where he does that super fey "It's not feyaaah" at the end of the song? falloff

That's the one! lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Very good point, Marques! I noticed thet the first album I buy from an artist usually remains my favorite. Prince's Lovesexy, Sly's Stand, Dylan's Highway 61... Also explains why so many folks here bitch about P's recent output. They still have fond memories of the 1980s. Still don't agree with you on The Dance though...I haven't heared the other version, but I might like the song better with a more stripped-down sound.

Yeah, at least for me that first initial experience (3121) has strong sentimental value as I most likely wouldn't ever have enjoyed and immersed myself in the legacy of Prince had I not chanced upon that album. It was a dark time in my life and that music lifted my spirit and told things to my ears that were unlike anything I had ever heard.

This attachment doesn't buffer me from the criticism it recieves however, upon exploring other Prince material and then revisiting 3121, I can see why it gets some heat. I still love it though, like Timmy84 said, different strokes for different folks. wink

I really love this song. I sang this at my 8th grade talent show and got some good feedback.

Uplifting lyrics.

Brilliant drums at the end.

Loving the vocals.

Don't understand why this isn't loved.

Does it really matter if he plays a better version of the song live? It implies to me that he wasn't happy with the first and then makes you wonder why he included it on the album.

And as for the orger who like Te Amozon Coriander or whatever that dull as dish water track is called, well here's to you fella! And you think we have bad taste. Then again some people really like X Factor/Pop Idol. It's horses for courses I guess.

3121 is not a great album by any stretch of the imagination. Luckily for me I was off Prince during the latter half of the 90s so missed most of his RnB monotony. I was busy raving it up listening to music that, at the time, was underground and pushing forward, breaking boundaries and forming friendships. Admittedly once that scene became public and the drugs wore off it too became rather dull.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, wasn't that the song Prince played for a small group of people a few yrs. back, who once the band started to really jam, started looking at each other as if to say "Oh no he didn't just tell us to "GET ON THE BOAT". If correct, P made the comment afterward, something like oops, maybe we should have played a different song.

Too funny.

I like it.

No it isn't. Sign O' The Times is a great album. 3121 is a 6/10. Better than average but really would only appeal to fans of the genre.

^ IloveAnnie has a point: no fillers on Sign "O" The Times.. I love every note on this damn fine masterpiece. music

3121 is nothing but fillers, only Black Sweat is strong. The title track is great when played live, sterile on the album, wink

^ OK, different opinions NeonC., smile

we just don't like the same elements in Prince's music.

I like when Prince is cutting edge like on SOTT.

I am 46, I bet you are a bit younger than me?

But... cool you love 3121, to me a very weak record. Actually I can't listen to this without feeling a bit sorry for Prince. Thankfully LF/MPLS were a lot stronger than the previous albums. To me that is..

And didn't I just mentioned in my comment that we all have different opinions? Not that I give a fuck, but still. Why did I have two people repeat that back to me? It's ridiculous.
