I have explained this before.

Y'know how...when the moon is full and bright and there are a few clouds around, you see these bright moonbeams as the moonlight filters through and between the clouds? And they're so bright and beautiful, it almost seems like you could walk to heaven on them?

Those are moonbeam levels.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I know what moonbeams are. Levels I don't get.

It's the same thing, is my point. But "moonbeam levels" is more descriptive and fits the poetic meter, where "moonbeams" does not.

Honestly never thought about it like that Genesia, it's a nice idea. smile

I think I just gave up on this one because it's not something I ever gave a lot of thought to, I didn't think it was nonsense, but assumed it was some 7 circles of hell/heaven type thing.

I've always liked the lyrics to this song a lot. Everything he wrote around that time was pure poetry, in my book.

Yesterday I tried to write a novel

But I didn't know where to begin

So I laid down in the grass

Tried to feel the world turn

You know exactly how he was feeling - what young person hasn't felt that way? He took a basic, "the world sucks and I want out" song and captured it so beautifully.

And he tied it up so nicely with a "Yeah, okay - I said it. I feel better now."

He don't wanna really wanna die

It's pretty magical, actually.

I think there is a certain energy the moon gives us all if we pay attention. I believe moonbeam levels are the amount of this energy, "please send all your moonbeam levels to me, I'm looking for a better place to die." Almost sounds as if without this energy, he will die (and later we find out he doesn't really want to die). I agree it is a beauful and poetic song. I can understand why it's confusing to some. I hope that helps.

lol because I think he says that too: please send all your moonbeam levels to me...

However, everything I've read from the "experts" say different, "peace and glory of moonbeam levels to be"

I think you and I are right though.

Just waiting for the "new master" version to be released in which Prince changes the lyric to "please send all your bootleg records to me!"

Your kidding! I was one of the first people to get this tape, which did in fact originate from Jesse Johnson. I have listened to it a zillion times. Prince has never said anyting like: "peace and glory of moonbeam levels to be" that makes absolutely no sense. Sounds like a very poor translation from someone who does not speak english originally. No offense, but I am 100% certain it is "please send all your moonbeam levels to me"

it's prince wishing that god would make the beams of the moon descend down to earth as levels, thus providing a celestial staircase so he can "find a better place to die". thats my interpretation anyways.
