Well tell you what. Take the top 15 songs by Prince on guitar of your own choosing and put them up head to head against Jesse's BAre My Naked Soul cd. Then you sit down and learn to play ALL of the songs yourself. Then come back and answer this post. The results will speak volumns. Thats all I ask. I play all of Prince's stuff and honestly his stuff is simple. I don't want to influence you though, PLEASE do this test and report back you r results. It will be a fun read if your honest

you play all prince stuff and it's simple to you, yeah right smile, maybe you are better then prince

Im not saying I am better than Prince but yes I have learned and played just about all of his music. There are a few that I dont bother with that are not guitar songs but yes his stuff is easy. Its not about me, all I asked was for you to do it. It will give you a true appreciation of Jesse AND Prince on guitar and you will see the difference. Thats all. Im just a guitar player for fun in a bar band. I like Prince but it does get old hearing he is the greatest guitar player because thats just not true. The best way to comment on it is to see it for yourself, thats all.

You are so wrong on this one.

What Prince plays sounds easy only when he plays it.Every single lick

Prince plays have Killer precise timing.

I am also a guitar player and i bet you can replicate his stuff in a nice

way but nowhere near Prince man.

Maybe you even have a nice timing because of your experiance

playing in a bar band but your timing probably looks off compared to what Prince does.

Guitar solos have a word solo in the title but guitar solos are

also all about the rhythm,if you

play guitar solo at the wrong tempo it can ruin the song and it

can make you sound bad.

Prince timing is one of the best in popular music and Jesse can't mess with that.

I doubt you could play Prince's earliest guitar solos with the right notes and timing as good as his.

But prove me wrong ,record your self playing guitar solo from the song Get It Up.

And share us with the link to hear you playing .

BTW

Prince was only 23 years old when he performed that solo.

it should be an easy task for you

but somehow i doubt it.

But.....Guitar???? HELL NO!!!!!!

Jesse was already a BADASS on Guitar b4 He met P (word 2 Morris Day)

He was ALREADY rockin' Pink (which probably made P choose Purple)

Sidebar: Jesse ALWAYS gave it up 2 His influences, and P always "sidestepped" His!!!

cool cool cool

Sorry! It was Prince idea 4 Jesse to come out in a pink suit. Prince started that Pink thing with Jesse not Jesse.....Jesse didn't want 2< but did it 4 Prrince & got a big responce 4rm the women in the audience & cotinued doing it after that...

Jesse didn't start wearing pink until the 1999 tour. He was not wearing it @ all during there first tour or on the cover of there debut album. Maybe that is the story Morris was told to say. I mean even Morris was a Prince created character....

I respect you Militant. But how can you possibly back up this claim? Prince has recorded more songs...which leaves you the listener to believe he has more range than JJ. But you need to really listen to JJ's music and see him in concert. Don't forget, Prince sought out Jesse during the Camillie album. I believe Prince viewed Jesse as a threat to him.

Apples and oranges, but I wouldn't dare say Prince influenced Jesse. Like many have already stated, Jesse was a badass player before he got hooked up in the prince camp. Neither can do what the other does so well. Prince can't play with the ballsy, ferocious intensity that Jesse does, and Jessse can't play as pretty as Prince can.

Don't dog Jesse's playing because it's "pentatonic based" because if you listen closely there's a lot of good timing in there as well. And let's not pretend Prince is some guitar wizard when it comes to scales/modes; he's pretty much a pentatonic based player too.

Jesse is also just as tight as Prince when it comes to rhythm guitar. Look up some clips of him performing on the tom joyner morning show.

chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

It never fails: play furiously fast in pentatonic and people will rave about you. Play with style, with an amazing touch, play only the good notes, don't show off, make sure harmonies and melodies are plain perfect a la Wes Montgomery and most people will think your skills are limited. lol

Ok if you are experienced then you will have to agree that Prince's guitar playing(especially the last 10 years) is VERY SLOPPY. Almost every clip I have seen lately he is lazy and sloppy when it comes to the technical side of it. Its almost cringeworthy at times. You should understand what I am talking about right. Go back and watch the "almighty Superbowl performace" and you will see what I'm talking about. Its not a "top guitar player". Its good but there is a big difference. Vai, Satriani, Van Halen, Stevie and any other of the greats would not make these mistakes. Its just sloppy. What you think?

Sloppy? Damn... you must be foolin'!

For me there are 2 type of guitar players. Chest-high (not sexy), hip-high (sexy)!

Most of you experienced org axers are probably in the first category (and plus: I'm sure you have to stare at the neck of your guit pretty much all the time while soloing!!!(totally unsexy!!!!))

For me are the guitar solos of Prince always highlights. He has such a signature style! He kicks them solos like it would be nothing... while dancing, posing and fooling around.... and yeah: hip-high!

Jesse:

Don't discuss with me! He's the MPLS-Funk-Guitar-Player Nr 1! 100% guitar player! Don't mess with Jesse!

"Vai, Satriani, Van Halen, Stevie and any other of the greats would not make these mistakes.."

... you forgot Yngwie Malmsteen!!!!!!!! wuahaha...damn!

YOU WILL SHIT IN YOUR PANTS LIVE ON STAGE whenever you'll get close to a Prince type of solo once in your lifetime!

Who influenced who? I don't know! But IT'S THE BLUES where it's started from. And both of them are very JIMI! And I can DIG those sloppy, dirty and funked out guitar players, HELL YEAH!

AND:

Why does Jesse play the solos note by note on the time classics? Because he has to! The Time Fans want it like this. Jerome brings always the mirror! Would you like him bringing a wardrobe?

Classics are classics... you can't make them better!

This is very funny! biggrin

Indeed the position of the guitar while playing says a lot about the player. It's a fact that a hip high player can't master certain difficult passages. He's automatically limited from a technical point of view. (because of the anatomy of the hand, not because of the view)

On the other hand: Some of the chest high players, who are able to play everything, do have the tendency to play much more mechanical and soulless because of concentrating too much on the technical aspect.

So the only way "hip high" players can make up for their technical limitations is to put as much soul in their playing as possible.

For me an ideal player has to have both: technique and soul.

That means chest high, but still sexy!

I must say I favour Prince style of playing. He is better at composing great solo melodies, and his timing is more poetic and lyrical imo. The feel, timing and use of quiet parts makes Prince solos speak more from the soul imo. I have heard all the way through Jesse last double album a couple of times, and what hits me is that he is a technical player that is good at imitating the masters, and is producing a very beautiful tune, but his compositions are a bit too much and overkill imo.

However I think it sounds like Prince is meeting Jesse halfway on The Time albums, playing in a way that is more in the nature of Jesse to play than Prince normally does. Some might even say that it is actually Jesse playing those solos, but knowing that Prince is really good at imitating, I think he just met Jesse halfway, and Jesse did the same thing, playing Prince solos with his own touch to it live.

Prince can go from hendrixs to santana in a split second, but is usually a tasty purple mixture of all of his influences.

Prince is a very good guitar player. In fact is the only rock guitarist I can listen to because he's VERY lyrical even when playing rock. But saying Prince is great at modalizing and things like that goes far beyond the line.

Just listen to the (edulcorated) jazz excersises he used to play at 3121 Las Vegas: the band might be playing a jazzy background, but Prince kept on playing in a rock-ish language because he hardly can go much farther than that.

Thank U!! Finally someone has the gall to say this...
