While i agree that Prince hasn't had as big an impact on funk music as James Brown, Parliment or Sly Stone, P is still regarded as one of the best funk artists. His name is usually among the top 10 or top 20 or so funk artists and he has also been voted as one of the best funk guitarists. Considering that a funk legend like George Clinton covered Erotic City (a funk song after all), it shows that P has made an impact as a funk artist, even though his impact on funk is not as big as George, JB or Sly. Plus Prince can play some funky bass

Interesting thread, i haven't heard George Michael's work in depth so i can't answer as to who has the better albums. George is probably the better singer and Prince is better in the musicianship department.

I'm a huge fan of both, but I don't see how anyone can compare the two. They are both great singers and songwriters, but they are very different artists. I think both are extremely talented musicians.

Who is:

more talented

a better live performer

better singer

better songwriter

better musician

(who has) better albums

(who has) better songs

overall artist.

Now PLEASE: no stans. lol If you are going to contribute to this discussion please have something to say. None of this Prince is music crap.

For fun, let's also compare albums one by one biggrin

Faith vs. Sign O The Times

Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 vs. Graffiti Bridge

Older vs. Chaos and Disorder

Songs From The Last Century vs. Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic

Patience vs. Musicology

Go!

I will start off by saying it practically impossible for any known musical artist to top Prince. That is beacuse he covers so much territory by himself and is able to do so , so sucessfully. He is in most ways really in a category all his own. That is not to say other that other artists are not "as good" as him, because in the end, its songs and performance of them that matters the most. But in terms of pure capability and accomplishment, Prince is almost impossible to beat.

More talented?

George is a good looking and incredibly gifted songwriter, singer and musician. But Prince is more than that.

A better live performer?

Prince by a landslide

Better singer?

They are very different singers.

Prince is perhaps a better singer, technically, in that he has more range and diversity. But, the velvety signiture tone with which George sings, Prince could never replicate. So that may balance the scales.

Truthfully, both of them have been extremely influential on other singers in the past 20 years. I think I'd say though that George's influence, edges out Prince's, especially in R&B, but George never gets the credit that he deserves for it.

Better songwriter?

This is where the meat and potatoes of the competion between these two, is. It would take 40 pages to really get into it, but basically, both of them posesses songwriting skills that the other doesnt have.

Prince could never write a jazz/bossa nova like "Cowboys and Angels" and George Michael could never write a rock song like, "Bambi".

Both are fantastic songwriters, both have a fine ear for pop music and both can unquestionably bring the funk.

The main difference between them lies in that Prince's best songwriting is prone to being eccentric and playful, either lyrically or musically, which in turn, makes it more innovative. George's best songwriting on the other hand, is often more sensitive, subtler and mature, which in turn makes it more adult.

This difference is also reflected in their style of production.

In the end, both compliment each others styles really well.

Better musician

Probably Prince, being great guitar player as well as a multi-instrumentalist. But,...what people dont often know about George is that he too is a multi-instrumentalist like Prince. Although he does not play it up.

George is actually a really good bass player and has played on most of his hits. He also plays keyboards and drums and acoustic guitar.

And like Prince, George is an excellent drum machine programmer.

(Who has) better albums?

You cant really compare. They both very distinctive artists. Both make world class pop albums (or at least, did), but they make different kinds.

There is nothing in Prince's album catalog that sounds anything like Listen Without Prejudice Vol.I or Older.

There is nothing in George's album catalog that sounds anything like Dirty Mind or Purple Rain.

It would be senseless to compare albums.

Songs, yes. But not albums.

Overall artist.

I suppose that same opinion holds for a lot of people concerning Prince given his low record sales. Either way it would leave those people as irrelevent to the question of under/overrated.

I've had posted on the org before..however there are more similarities than people here realise. Not just musically...

1. GM readily admits his fondness for Prince during his own Faith period, and has admitted recently (in the 2011 re-release of Faith) how much the album sounds like Prince in some areas.

2. Both had significant contractual arguements with their record companies in the early 90's

3. After bitter arguements with their record labels, both released their Freedom albums in 1996. (GM with Older and P with Emancipation. The last track on emancipation is the title track, and the last track on Older is Free...

4. Both of them in 1996 released covers of "I Can't Make You Love Me" (GM released a live version of this in 1996 on the Older Single EP)

5. Both artists have also had complete creative control of their output - with both men having "Written, Arranged and Produced by" on all their albums.

The truth is, it's comparing apples to oranges. Two different artists. And I like both of them.

That said..to me, the promise and composition of Faith never bared the fruit I expected in Michael's followup albums. It's as if he either didn't write the songs on Faith, or couldn't write songs as well as he did on Faith, in his later albums.

Prince, on the other hand, has shown me time and again he is no fluke. The brilliance of 1999/Purple Rain didn't fade with his subsequent releases.

Good topic. Going back to the 80's, Prince was the 1st one I saw of the two. But I heard GM sing 1st.

I remember when my cousins told me that GM was gay and I was heart-broken. (I think my cousin might of known someone that dated GM back in the 80's). So, I started to look at GM like a girl. He sings very well.

-But to look at all the time that has passed and all the albums of both artists, I have to go with Prince because he just doesn't give up. I thinke GM gave up somewhere.

Yeah because I wanted a 'pre-teen' music idol, a heart-throb. If he was gay, my fantasies would be a waste.

-Sometimes I look back at GM's career and I think about a lot of wasted time on his part.popcorn

-I still would rather pick Prince in the long run, he has more energy.
