Prince, being Prince

Prince is known for finding women of some level of talent in one area and thrusting them into the spotlight by having them do something totally different. With the exception of maybe Sheila, it's hasn't always worked for the best.

I just listened to Andy's singing (I believe from the recent onslaught that she's experiencing that she's his latest female whatever) on youtube and I didn't think she was all that terrible. Very Vh1 Soul. But, as a guitar player, it's seems to be unamious on here, that she has a ways to go before she's, say, Wendy.

Apollonia is an actress, albeit not Oscar-worthy, but Prince wanted her to sing (I guess because she was portraying a, ahem, singer named Vanity) and made her believe that she could enough to perform on Falcon Crest and make a solo album or two.

Carmen Electra...poor, poor, Carmen Electra. As a dancer, I guess, she wasn't that bad. Well, Prince wanted a female rapper and thought that with his lyrics she could be listed with the likes of Queen Latifah and MC Lyte. idk

Bria, wasn't she a model or something, what made her qualified to be a singer? Didn't he have the nerve to say that she was going to be the next Sade or you can listen to her while you wait for the next Sade album to come out!! Whatever he said, it was an insult to Sade.

So, it's not the ladies fault that they're weren't good at what they were doing, it's Prince. What's wrong with Andy just being a singer, Apollonia just being an actress, Carmen just being a dancer, and Bria just standing there and being pretty on his arm? When will Prince realize that it's ok to be good at one thing. Everyone don't need to be multi-talented, unless God made them to be. Hasn't he had enough "fails" in this arena to stop trying to make the females in his world something that they are not.

Prince is never Prince on TV, that's for sure.

He's always playing somebody, but at this point, I wonder if these 'acts' really are just manefestations of projections of his 'cooler' selves now. lol

It's true that none of these women will ever reach the same level that Prince is on but they've all accomplished good things for themselves.

Andy Allo is now enjoying increased popularity and is under the wing of one of the greatest living performers on the planet.

Carmen Electra is friggin' CARMEN ELECTRA!!! She don't need to do any more that that!

Bria Valente is still going to go down in music history as being an unkown artist with a CD that debuted at number 2 on the charts(with no real lead in promotion) no matter how you slice it!

Apollonia is still giving dudes boners from that scene at the lake and she gave us 'Sex Shooter' which is a friggin' classic cut and still rocks the party!

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

And you would be correct in all of that. I'm not saying that within their time with Prince that these women didn't get anything out of the deal. It's just seem to me that, let's use Andy for example, it's unfair to criticize her guitar playing abilities when it was Prince's idea that she played the guitar in the first place. She's a singer, not a guitarist. If that is what she wants to continue to do, allow her to grow. Don't be mad at her for not being skilled, be mad at Prince for having her portray herself as something that she clearly is not. I guess that is the point that I was trying to make with this thread. Apollonia and Bria weren't singers, Carmen wasn't a rapper, and apparently Andy isn't a guitarist. They were just being what Prince wanted them to be and criticism-wise they've paid for his mistake.

This is an interesting perspective about why Prince puts these chicks into areas that they are not talented in. My take on this is that it has more to do with his male ego and being a control freak. If a woman is say, a dynamic dancer but he insists that she is a painter instead, everyone will say, "Oh, look at that cute, mediocre, painter" instead of saying, "Wow, look at this phenominal dancer!" and then subsequently forget about Prince. I'm not saying all men are like this but the vast majority that I've dealt with have a fear of a woman being more talented than they are. They'd rather be with someone who seems incompetent because it makes them feel good....Now, I understand why there are so many crazy cat ladies in this world...

Where would we be today if he hadn't convinced Sheila E. to step out front and sing instead of just playing the drums? I believe Prince sees talent in those he surrounds himself with and wants to help them grow at it. It may not always work out but i'm glad and grateful for the fruits of the efforts made over the years.

Good point, Honestman, I guess Sheila was worth the 99 "Carmen's" so to speak wink

I know Andy is very pretty and she may be a nice person. However, she is not qualified to play guitar in a band as talented as the NPG and with an icon like Prince. A back up singer, maybe, but not a guitar player. Hopefully, she's just used for the European leg of this tour.

I was watching Purple Rain this weekend and thought about this thread. There was only one well known actor(from America) in the entire movie. The whole project was essentially Prince taking people(musicians) and putting them in positions(acting) they normally wouldn't have been in otherwise and it turned out to be a genius move. Hollywood could've easily cast actors to play musicians and piped in the music for a more artistically credible project but it wouldn't have been the same movie. Sometimes you have to stretch beyond what you think are your limitations to get to where you truly need to be in life. This is what Prince brings out in individuals.
