I agree 100%. While I miss fun, edgy, carefree Prince, I can't think anything other than that it was a good choice if being a JW makes him happy and fulfilled. And while 20Ten isn't the most exciting album Prince has ever released, I like some of the more mellow songs ... there has been a lot of 'mellow' lately sigh

being happy and fulfilled doesn't lend itself to great art.

LoL touché. Ok, I'll rephase: The decision to become a JW was a good choice for Prince, the individual - but it remains to be seen how good of a decision it was for Prince, the artist.

Prince had met Larry in a studio when he was recording his first or second album, but then they met again in 97 or 98 in Nashville and since Prince was not in good animic shape (he'd just lost his son, his parents...) Larry saw the opportunity of his life to get such a celebrity recruited into his 'faith'.

That's a fact, not what I 'believe or think'.

Finally, I wipe my arsehole with karma.

Well, I also heard it was his mother that wanted him to become a JW, so all the stories of how he chose to embrace the JW faith are conflicting. So it makes no sense to hold hatred toward anyone you "assumed" led him to become a JW. It's no secret Prince has always incorporated God/religion into his music long before he joined the JW faith. It's also not your personal decision, mine or anyone else's to choose another's faith. You're entitled to an opinion of it, but you can't choose it for them, because you don't walk in anyone else's shoes but your own, and live your own life experience(s).

Oh, by the way, you may need extra tissue to wipe that karma from your asshole.lol

I have also seen posts claiming Mattie made Prince promise to join JW. However Prince was raised Seventh Day Adventist, so did his mom convert to JW? No way would a SDA want a family member to convert to JW.

That was his personal choice.

You got to respect that.

Agreed. I don't even think this is something that should be up for debate if you ask me.

Religion/spirituality are deeply personal things. You can't say Prince being a JW is wrong. Thats his choice and I think we should all respect that whether you agree or not.

His life, his choice.

This is a good debate since Prince has used his spirituality in his music. I love Still Would Stand All Time, The Cross, and Anna Stesia. I love the spiritual thoughtful-""political"" Prince so much1!yes

Yep, that's right. I think Ja Rule was raised around the truth and went to meetings but never made the truth his own and went off and did his own thing. But yeah, he is not a JW. And Terrence Howard, I think his ex-wife is a JW and I think even his kids but like you said, he said he didn't want to make changes - he doesn't have anything against JW's but he said it's his own self (I know a few people like that even in my family).

Thanks for the correction...

You're welcome. I just happened to have read the article interview about Ja Rule some years ago and saw a Terrence Howard interview somewhere in which he said that.

I believe it has had little to no influence on the music itself, or his attitude in general, just the lyrics. And no, they don't bother me any more than when he talked about Jesus or The Cross or God or when he shivered about being "so cold"

From what I've heard/been told, his mother was a JW until her passing.

I would never judge anyone when it comes to religion and faith. He has obviously connected with the JW faith, and he is finding peace of mind and heart with them. Happy that he has found a place for that.

However, as an artist, I DO think it's hindering his creativity. Now he has to put limits on his art, at least lyrically, and that can only hurt the outcome. I am personally glad he doesn't sing about graphic fucking anymore, since at his age, it would come across as plain silly and immature. But for instance a song like The Cross, which imo is BRILLIANT, and sounded like it came from his heart...now all of a sudden, he needs to change the lyrics, and thus diminishing its initial impact, soley to conform to his religion. That is not a good thing imo.

As far as I know he is still a JW...I would think that would be a major reason he is still worshipping with them. But you are right...I don't know...I am just assuming.

It's not a good choice for ANYONE to become a Jehovah's Witness. If you look at their mindset they are basically a cult, no matter how much they may deny it. They tell a good story at the begining, but once you are in, things change drastically. They have some good ideas, but most of their faith is based on changing (flip- flopping) doctrines. They hide this as much as they can.

I think Prince liked their message initially, but it took a while to figure out what they are really about. He may still hold on to some of their ideologies, but I think he is slowly moving away from some of their stricter doctrine.

Being a Jehovah's Witness is a real mind fuck. Even when you leave, their doctrines and ideas tend to mess with your mind. Even if Prince ever leaves them completely, he will always carry around their beliefs; for better of worse. sad

I think a big part of not using profanities during live concerts is more to do with the fact that his fan's are brining their children to his concerts and he's also getting to an age where he can't really get away with singing those kinds of things without looking foolish

From an outsiders perspective... No... I don't think it was a good idea. Religions, particularly literalist theist religions like the JW doctine, are out-of-date belief systems. Science and open inquiry has revealed more truth to us than any religion ever has.

But who knows. It's not really up to me. Maybe he's the kind of person who needs that 'delusion of stability' in his life. If it makes him more at peace with himself and he's not harming anyone in the process, then I have no right to say he shouldn't believe it I guess. Good luck to him. My only beef comes when he tries to promote is as 'truth'...

I don't think i'ts been a bad choice ... assuming none of us know Prince intimately and have face-to-face discussions with him ... how do we know the inner workings of his mind and heart? Perhaps your perceived change in his music - it would have occurred no matter what religion he did or did not choose? His music may be evolving in a particular direction because he is changing, maturing, growing as a man - not because he is one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

It doesnt really matter what I think of the choice, but perhaps what prince himself thinks of his choice..? If he lives truthfully and authentically within the teachings/requirements of whichever religion he chooses, well then good for him...

I think it's a good decision for Prince to practice whatever religion his heart and mind leads him to.

Amen!!

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.
