Of course, this wouldn't have been possible without a certain friend who offered it up, no questions asked, no trades, no ego. Just wanted fans to enjoy and keep alive a legacy recording that would otherwise be forgotten to the ages. And having the archival audio wizards at Free Boot Generation and 4DaFunk step in together to work their magic was another incredible gift to the casuals and hard cores. All for free.

Now, this is showing up on eBay and iOffer, but the only one's that should profit from this are Prince, his band and crew. Since that's not the objective of these sellers of simple CD-Rs and inkjet printouts, please just share the lossless files or start an old-skool CD-R exchange with a bunch of friends.

I hope the "cliques" and "those-in-the-know" chatter can be put to rest as this thing has propagated to every corner of the web by now. The org doesn't need papers served by Prince's litigation-happy minions - that's really the only reason we have to be cool about not asking/posting "how-to-get" these unauthorized gems. So I hope everyone can respect that.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

If Prince had done aftershows during the Purple Rain tour, I imagine that they would have sounded like this. Great extended versions of rare tracks... cool

Yeah. I fucked up transposed two songs on the tracklist and early shares had that particular art. Here is the fixed art: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TBUZ1B8D Note: Absolutely no audio is contained in the download, just jpeg and pdf artwork.

Nom nom nom. Finally had chance to track this down and have a listen. Fantastic stuff.

Anyone worked out the proper lyrics to Our Destiny yet? Did a search but only managed to find a couple of lines :-\

Thank you whoever is responsible for releasing this. I love you! xx

Just curious. A soundboard recording of a Prince concert surfaces 27 years later.

Who do u think the source would be?

Someones got links to the Park...as i said before its strange that this was talked about only a month or two ago about how it would be great to have a soundboard version and hey presto a Soundboard version! smile

As long as its free and no-ones getting ripped off its all good, in fact whoever did this is very altruistic. Just hope Prince is cool with it too.

Prince would be horrified since much of the performance (like Free) is substandard, with lots od dead space in between songs, and mixed/EQ'd badly for the purposes of home listening (it's a mix specifically for the acoustics of the venue from those speakers at that time).

Actually, the mix is perfect. Have you listened to this release? Substandard? Dead space? Huh? There's dead space between like 2 songs.

You could skip that and burn FLAC files directly to CDR with this: http://download.cnet.com/...52698.html

Maybe I'm listening to a pre-bootlegger tweaked version of this soundboard. It's possible that everyone is getting one that has been pseudo-remastered for the tone.
1. "17 Days" track starts up with the drum test for the mics as a track is playing on the speaker and the song kicks in past one minute into the track. And the song just doean't have a that full muscle to it's performance.

2. "Our Destiny" the vocals are muddy and not so great. But it is cool to hear this and "Roadhouse Garden". I'd love to hear him cover this now. Unlike many on here, I find his live arranging skills got better and better, although I don't agree with some of his adult-lite sounds of late.

4. we get 1:22 interlude

5. But then I really like "All Day, All Night" that track has some spark and originality to it here.

6. "Free" is horrible! And takes about 50 seconds of noodling around with the bassdrum changing tempo and reverb effect before it clicks with the piano. And then the song itself is a bad version, a skeletal version of what is on the album with background vocals that sound bad.

7. "Noon Rendezvous" noodles around (in a funky way though) almost 2 and a half minutes before it starts. Ad the noodling around didn't actually build to the song.

8. "Erotic City" the music sounds good, but the vocals foreground and background sound bad. But I hope this ends debate on whether it's "fuck" or "funk"

9. We got 15 seconds before "Something in the Water" starts. But this sounds pretty good. I like how what sounds like a hiccup in the performance around 2:52 has him laugh and comment "oooh, that don't compute..."

10. "When Doves Cry" He's having to sort of whine to the audience at the start. But the music and vocals actually sound really good on this one.

11. Compare "Bitch" to that on the Syracuse concert, or any soundboard boot rehearsals, It's not as cool. Not as developed. It also has non-dramatic start. And he starts with the second verse! Makes the first verse the second. It sounds soft on the tone too. The "want some more?" part abounds weak here.

12. And then we got 30 seconds before "Possessed" starts, and it's a kind lighter more musically generic version then what was developed for the tour as the James Brown-esque workout directly segued from "Bitch". His vocals are good here.

Prince doesn't seem to get totally into it vocally speaking. Sounds kind of like a rehearsal.

But this is repsonse to everyone in here acting like this is the best thing since the Small Club show. The opening instrumental and DMSR on that show are just perfect. AND INTENSE.

The other Purple Rain era boot that was an audience recording but had Bitch/Possessed on it that came out months ago was a better show than this... wasn't it?

It wasn't Prince. He requested the mobile recording studio be there to capture everything to multi-track ala the previous benefit concert at First Ave that some Purple Rain songs were recorded and based upon. He also had all of his performances taped at the soundboard. But, that's where Prince's involvement ended.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I agree, but sometimes, (like an aftershow), the raw soundboard sounds more real and personal like the Birthday show, rather than the tweeked.

This soundboard is the mix for the room, not for home listening. As good as it sounds, a multitrack recording would have to be mixed seperately for home listening to be "perfect". And, knowing Prince, there would also be many overdubs & edits.

That said, it is an EXCELLENT "bootleg" release. It is very rare for a SBD boot to be a mixed for home listening, so, it's certainly not something I would complain about.

Yeah, but I presume that the people who got ahold of the tape ran it through an EQ?

Why do people continue to insinuate that Prince intentionally "leaks" bootlegs like this?? When are you gonna get it through your skulls? He does NOT condone bootlegs and in no way at all intentionally contributes to the market! End of story. Enough with the conspiracy theories.
