This goes to the professional acts it seems...

Even if they don't ASK him...they still have to PAY him...if they record his music. That's the LAW.

If what he wants is the ability to say, "No, you cannot record my music." and with that...it cannot be recorded.

Then what he wants...is to make something that is already legal to do...become illegal to do. Meaning he wants it "outlawed".

You're giving this guy too much power. lol

I must agree. Oh - there goes American Idol - bye! (not that American idot didn't have some real good Diva singers!) Don't forget the amazing musicians behind them, and the body of amazing backup singers! BRAVO - WHO WHERE YOUR NAMES?????????????????????????

Perhaps, maybe we can hear some real musicians, with unique voices, that write their own music, and their own lyrics!

In this day and age of music where everything is a sample or a cover it'd be nice if new artists put effort into creating their own songs instead of covering anyone elses. Very few covers live up to the originals. I believe Prince respected Alicia's cover of his song because she's a friend and he admires her talent. Obvious by her performing it with him last night at the Forum. He feels the same about Chaka Khan. I don't think he's fond of most of the covers of his music that are out today. As for the covers he's done for CD releases you'd have to ask the original artists how they feel about his version and if he asked them for permission first. If he wants to be able to tell someone like Trey Songz that you can't record a cover of 'Purple Rain' that should be considered. It's a professional courtesy that he's asking for form artist to artist. Sending someone a notice isn't the same thing as asking them for permission.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Go listen to the many hideous covers of Purple Rain on iTunes. Do you think Prince gave the okay to those? As long as they give notice and pay the royalties, he doesn't have a choice. The law you quote is the very law he's complaining about.

Books don't work this way

Movies don't work this way

Television shows don't work this way

Comics don't work this way

Paintings don't work this way

Only in "nondramatic musical compositions" are you permitted to make a copy of someone else's art as long as you pay the pre-set royalties. Prince is saying that the artists should have more control than that. That Prince should be able to tell LeAnn Rimes he doesn't want a country version of Purple Rain if he wants to.

A random singer can't remake the movie Purple Rain because of copyright law, but they can remake the entire soundtrack album because of the exception you referenced that Prince complained about.

[Edited 4/23/11 13:25pm]

Which means he wants covers (recorded ones) outlawed as the title of this thread suggests.

Not that he just wants people to ask his permission first...as you asserted in your first post.

The question is...did Prince himself get permission before he recorded the covers of the songs that I posted videos of or did he take advantage of the same law that he's complaining about and record them first, then notified the copyright holders and paid the royalties accordingly because that was all that he was required to do?

I haven't said whether I agree with his position or not. I just noticed the increasingly familiar scent of his hypocrisy.

When Trez Songz got up on stage at the BET Awards...where Prince was receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award and called himself "performing" Purple Rain! whofarted

I wanted Prince to go up there...snatch that mic out of his hand and crack him upside his head with it and finish HIS song the only way it was meant to be but Prince just sat there nodding and hasn't said a thing about it since. hrmph

Personally, I think that was more disrespectful to Prince as the legendary artist that he is...than anything that's been recorded.

.

[Edited 4/23/11 16:48pm]

what are you talking about? He wants covers to require permission, which is both what I said and what he said in the interview. And is closer to how all other art forms work. Why is music treated so differently? Take his lyrics and publish them in a book instead of recording them as music and other people could not legally turn them into a song. Why does he lose rights to his art by publishing them as a recording?

You can't say it's hypocrisy when you don't know if he asked for permission or not. You can only call it hypocrisy by making an assumption. And I don't think he means to stop people from doing covers during live performances, which is a way to pay tribute to other artists. I believe he is referring to being able to sell copies of a new studio recording. Thus you'd also need permission to release a cover that is part of a live album and edit it out otherwise.

he wants to allow it with permission, disallow it without permission. Outlaw suggests he wants to ban covers entirely, which isn't the case at all.

This is another instance of Prince having a point, but getting it across very poorly.

Right ... Then I agree with him (Prince). As it has been mentioned earlier in the thread, he is more against someone covering his song on an album ...

This article is not accurate - he doesn't want them outlawed, all he wants is the artist to be consulted before their song is used. This is perfectly fair and I agree with Prince on this - I like the way he stands up to the artists rights in the face of corporate beauracracy.

I can only assume he

got permission for the covers otherwise it would be quite hypocritical.

Although I think most artists would be flattered to be covered by Prince, the Foo Fighters basically wet themselves after he covered them!!

If i was ever in a position, to record in my opinion, a credible cover of Prince and release it officially, id ask for his permission first as common courtesy, infact approval from Prince would be fucking awesome.

However if i were to perform a track live by Prince, i wouldnt feel like id need permission to do that.

Was that supposed to insult me? Unlike the masses on here I'm a fan of Prince's work and actually listen to what he says. I'm not bitter about the NPGMC/Crystal Ball/Lotusflow3r or anything else he's done that didn't work out perfectly. That's because at the end of the day it's all about music and nothing more. Also I doubt there'll be any room up your starfish & coffee until you pull the stick out!
