Not spooky?!?!?! The song is haunting as hell!!!! The repeating key figure over the monotonous drum beat is spooky as shit. It's really dark and cold actually. Love how the song ends, the Fairlight Orch. hits never sounded more insane and the screaming/crying through and the distortion at the end, beautiful!! Fits perfectly on that record IMO.

Loving it. It's like he is demanding sex, and you will give it to him, because you just have to. At the same time it's kind of desperate. Cause he's kind of showing two sides of dominance at once. Dominating, and being dominated. Demanding vs begging desperatly. The difference is huge, at the same time as it can be partially the same thing. Prince is messing with human emotions on every song like no other, this is no exception. That's how I picture it.

when I heard it in 1987 it sounded like an attempt at being spooky and electronic, but in light of beats and sounds form the likes of Depeche Mode, etc it just sounded like a failed attempt. The ending guitar solo also has a Pink Floyd flavor. I dunno, it just didn't seem interesting or cool in anyway.

But... what is this about people not knowing what it was about? Is it not about an unhealthy obsession with "Doing It"? Like the song literally says?

I do think that "It" was Prince trying to enter a more cold electronic music sphere much like what Depeche Mode was in, or probably many many others that I don't even know. I would say Prince was trying to get into different territory. Much like he was trying to go after "Duran Duran money" (- Prince) with putting together the white fronted "The Family", even though the music was pure Prince.

In my late teens-twenties when I first heard "It", that song was always a guilty pleasure for me; it felt like "It" was vibrating right through my body when I listened to it. I always liked that song.

Totally unappreciated. Its one of the better tracks on a superb album. I love the throbbing beat and the intensely sexual lyrics, plus the fact he really sounds horny during the track. The throbbing raw wanton sexuality latent in this track is what Prince is all about. And it sounds intelligent, howe many people say "I could be guilty for my honesty, but I got to tell you what you mean to me" when they are looking for a bonk. Thats deep.

Its also like a later version of Dirty Mind with the lyric "On the stairs, anywhere is alright"

I love that song, way ahead of its time, sounds like it could rival any of the *music* put out by today's "recording artists".

I adore this song, still after so many years. Something about this song makes me tingle inside, crawl, it's passionate, fierce. I miss this kind of songs.

It sucks. Its VERY repetitive and is just boring to me. Same beat over and over looped, same lyrics just about through the whole thing and the lyrics are just plain weak. Definately not one of his best written songs. Yeah yeah Prince wants to "do it"....ehhh....not really what I want to hear

I think your assumption is wrong.

Most people don't hate "It"... they just don't like it as much as most of the other songs on the album. It shows how strong an album "Sign O' The Times" is when even it's 'weakest' tracks are still good.
