people dont often cover Prince. So what do you think of this?

Im pretty sure this isnt against the rules of the site? If it is my sincerest apologies, im still a noobie here so please delete thread if it in anyway causes any shit. Anyways

I posted this in the controversial opinions thread but then figured it would be interesting to get opinions. A french glam metal band covered 1999. Was wondering what people thought of this rather random but unique take on a Prince track. Being a fan of glam metal myself i think its a pretty coolk take...i just think the vocals are weak.

Sounded good, nice guitar they kinda changed the chorus 2000 0 0 bit, which was a little awkward but it sounded fresh... cool

I haven't watched the link, but I think you answer yourself in that Prince is hard to copy vocally. This is probably why they don't often cover him. One of his strengths in vocal delivery is that he is so versatile. You can listen to a load of Prince songs from all albums in one stretch and although it's the same artist, it can feel like you've listened to a huge variety of music because a) he spans genres and b)although a distinct voice, he uses many different styles.

"people dont often cover Prince." ??

Well actually they do ..... there are a zillion covers of Prince-songs out there... both released and unreleased (although many of them are unlistenable lol )

The 1999-cover you posted is ok.... thanks!

95% of all Prince covers suck.

This one is quit awesome though, they did their song in their own style instead of hopelessly copying and failing it.

prince gets covered alot more than the majority of artists i can think of over the past 30 years. Ofcourse alot of these covers are in concerts. I heard (not sure about this) that even kurt cobain covered prince in a concert. Heck, even his b sides like "how come you dont call me anymore" have been covered by the likes of Alicia keys and adam lambert (live). The fact that even a b side of his gets covered 20 plus years after its release shows the impact he has made

Much better than Gary Numan's cover! That one is truly horrible.

This cover is smart and very fun but goes on too long. The original works because it keeps jumping around, but in this case the showy guitar playing and single vocalist become monotonous once the bulk of the lyrics have come out. It would work better re-edited as a short, explosive party anthem that blows up into a big finish at around 2:40–2:45 and then just stops at 3:00.

Most of the time, female vocalists are better at singing Prince covers than male vocalists. Stephanie Mills, TLC, Alicia Keys, Millie Jackson, & Mariah Carey are excellent examples to this.

Speaking from what I've heard in recent years, Evan Rodgers, Tevin Campbell, & D'Angelo are THE only three male vocalists that can do a Prince song any justice thus far.

I don't do Prince covers. They're terrible compared to the real thing.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

People you should listen to this: Sometimes it snows in April by the Native, a french duo girls band. It shreads!
