It's not that she was thrown in the trashcan...that's bad enough. But she was thrown in the trashcan by Jerome, who had his hand between her legs...Now that is blatant!! no no no!

So yeah, it was humiliating, but she didn't seem to care...or mind!

I thought I was the only one who had a problem with that scene, I don't know why, I just do, but I do like what the girl says to Moris though... lol

So u have no problem with a woman bustin out from behind a building making a public spectable of herself yelling about her man not showin up in the middle of the street in broad daylight?

I only meant that I thought it was funny when she was yelling at him.

That scene was pretty messed up. But I guess Mr. Blinn added it in for the sake of humor. You know what, y'all should go back & listen to that MTV Presents Prince interview he did in '85. He says something about that.

Well, as you know, Prince was getting grilled for the alledged misogyny in the movie. From what I can recall, I believe he said that they may have gone a little overboard for the sake of humor and apologizes for it. But he also said that he doesn't think anything they did there was unnecessary. And basically, IT'S JUST A GODDAMN MOVIE, PEOPLE!!!

ROFL!!! THAT'S some sad, cold, IGNANT shit! evillol

I never tripped on that scene until I got older. When I was young I laughed like everyone else. But when I see the film now, the blatant disrespect is kinda hard to swallow. I could see if it was a character we all hated, then it might be justified. But this was just some random woman - why is it "funny" to literally discard of this woman (translation - ANY woman) like that? Bad enough Kid's mom is getting her ass beat all the time & Apples gets the shit smacked out of her more than once - notice how he pushes her to the ground by gripping her face omfg Definitely some questionable shit happenening there...

FUCK PURPLE RAIN!!! mad

razz

*every woman* in Purple Rain is treated disrespectfully. I mean, dang, not just Appollonia 6. The simulated oral sex between P and Wendy in that one set. Shucks, the get-up Lisa's wearing when Wendy tells her to shut up during her rant with Prince in the dressing room.

Maybe there's a respectfully treated woman in the outtakes, in the parts that didn't make it to film. But, I doubt it.

Boy, my take at 30 sure differs from when I was 14 and just wanted to her P wail on his guitar!

I remember when this movie came out, there was alot of criticism that the film was sexist and degrading to women.I think it was Whoopi Goldberg who spoke out against the way women were treated in this film...

***Prince's mother gets beaten
***Apollonia gets slapped a few times by Prince
***Wendy and Lisa are ignored by Prince
***A woman is thrown into a dumpster by Jerome
***Wendy gets on her knees and pretends to be giving Prince a blowjob during "Computer Blue"
***Morris Day refers to Brenda and Susan as "bitches"
***Jill Jones' character has a crush on Prince. But he simply uses her to get info about another girl that he admires (Apollonia).

But,if you can get past all that,it's a GREAT movie smile

I never had a problem with that scene, per se, except for that girl's terrible acting. At one point when she's yelling at Morris she is obviously on the verge of laughing...

I'm Catholic and my family used to receive a Catholic newspaper every month, and each issue would contain the list of recent banned movies (movies condemned by the Pope and which faithful Catholics were told not to view) by the Church and the reason why they were banned.

"Purple Rain" was on the banned list, and it was due to that trash can scene because it was considered degrading to women.

I remember seeing it listed in the newsletter and being surprised that THAT scene caused the movie to be banned. I was only a teenager, but in my mind there were scenes a lot more "naughty" or "bad" than that one that I thought would've gotten it banned. To me the trashcan scene was just silly. I could definitely see the point about degrading women, but still...

smile Since when did the Catholic church care about women? These are the same people who brought you the Pope's encyclical "Humanae Vitae", stating that the regulation of fertility and contraception was against "Natural Law" yawn

nod Why just last week I chucked my ex into a vat of boiling hot acid and she was fine! Not to mention very clean. lol

BTW...Too many people taking a politically correct, virtuous stance on the scene. It's a movie, and a campy one at that. It's not being insensitive to say the scene was funny and leave it there. No one's going around throwing their ex-girlfriends in garbage cans, not in 1984, not in 2003.

I remember some critic saying the PRain "glorified violence towards women" back in the day. What a load of self-righteous crap. The movie never says or implies it's ok to hit a woman. In fact, the violence in the movie only serves to show how troubled The Kid was, and even moreso, that he was continuing his father's cycle of violence, something the Kid saw in his parents' life.

Exactly. We get the sense at the end of the movie The Kid is changing his ways after confronting his demons... his agreeing to play Wendy and Lisa's song, etc.

They have every right to their opinions of the movie, I just think it's taking it out of context.
Morris' character is hardly 3 dimensional, esp with the campy 'Sexy's on standby' schtick, the 'What's the password?' routine, the "Brass waterbed" scene...and except for a scene where he's seen feeling bad for making fun of the Kid's dead father, there isn't a shread of humanity in him, all posturing.
Now if Prince's character did that, I could see your point.
Even that scene is played off like he's some kind of superfly pimp, all comedy, nothing serious.

Here's another odd scene in the movie that could possibly be seen as degrading to women...

After performing "Sex Shooter",Apollonia and Prince get into a big fight and he knocks her to the ground. Then she gets up and walks away...in her lingerie!!! Presumably she had to walk home(?) dressed like that,in the middle of the night!!

That scene is unintentionally funny smile
