Extended versions of Kiss, Shockadelica & Good Love not really good

It's about time to break some tabus! wink

Although it's kinda fun to listen to them, I have to say that the extended versions of "Kiss", "Shockadelica" & "Good Love" don't sound very cohesive to me!

What about you?

there isn't an extended version of good love. the "extended" version of shockadelica is just the full length version, and i presume you think the bright lights bit city soundtrack original release of good love is extended as the version of crystal ball was edited like many other tracks on the release

why you wouldn't like the longer versions if you liked the other versions is strange

Why do you think that you are breaking a taboo?

Some people like them, some people don't, you don't...end of.

I happen to like most of the extended versions of tracks, there are only a handful of songs where i prefer the edit/single version, whatever. Anotherlover...... is one of them.

'Taboos'.

I love the full-length version of Shockadelica, and generally prefer the 12" versions of all his tunes. Except Hot Thing. I'll take the album version of that, please.

Oh, also - I prefer the mix on the album versions of I Wish U Heaven and Mountains; though of course, the extended portions on both of those songs are really great.

Nonsense.

I have never heard the extended version of Kiss, but the extended version of Shockedelica is the best one (all edgy and gutsy) while Good Love benefits from that left field outro (Gustav Mahler symphonies comprised).

I wish the extended portion of Kiss had an entire remix like it. Not that it's better than the original, but THAT's the part that makes me move my ass.

also, never really saw the point of editing Good Love by about 40 seconds and tacking street noise to the end of it. Shockadelica 12" is also superior. nasty bitch.

i thought the ext'd of Kiss and Mountains were both overrated and unnecessary. the remix of Hot Thing is my shiznit, didn't think he could improve on that masterpiece

Shockadelica is my favorite B-side of all time!! LOVE IT!! Good Love I play pretty often. Its one of the 20 or so Prince songs in my regular rotation. Kiss extended I like but dont listen too much. I do like the extended part better than the regular version though. Just not a big fan of kiss in general.

I understand you on the taboo thing. It seems like a number of people on the org likes extended versions better just as a reflex.

I personally dont like the extended version of Kiss, the album version is just the right kind of tight. Sometimes less is more.

Although i really like most of the extended version, Kiss extended never did it to me...it takes away the vibe of the song. There's too much going on.

And Good Love extended, does that one really exsists?

The extended version of Kiss has too many instruments/sounds added onto it.

possibly but the extended segment is WAY better then the original song. Good choice to decide to play it live during 2010!

First I have to say that I'm a big fan of all 3 tracks!

Just to explain my point of view a little bit more for people who are interested.

Moments I have problems with:

The extended part of "Kiss" feels too different (Instrumentation, groove etc.) from what was going on before.

I don't like the repetition of the "Shockadelica" chant in the lower register (sounds like a scratch on a vinyl record), which works as the beginning of the extended part after the 3 minute mark. Everything after sounds kind of playful, but doesn't really contribute strong parts to the song. Again it's very obvious when Prince starts and stops to extend. The edited version however is just perfect to my ear, it's the essence of the song, nothing more nothing less.

The longer version of "Good love" doesn't sound too different from the edited one. The only thing that doesn't fit is the "Good Love Part 2"-Chant IMO. Everything else seems ok to me, but it sounds a little bit tighter on the edited CB-version, which I prefer.

BTW: I feel the same about the song "Crystal Ball". Although there are many versions with different parts circulating, I think Prince did a very good job with his edit on the CB box-set.

I've noticed that a lot of extended versions that are purported to be the "original" version that he supposedly edited down, even some b-sides, are structured very much like a "part 1 and part 2". Shockadelica is a good example of this. She's Always In My Hair, Scarlet Pussy, La La La He He Hee, and Escape as well. he may very well have gone in with the intention of the longer version being the true, definitive, original version, but that's not how he structures them. the "extra" stuff in the extended versions seems like it's intentionally made to be edited out. it's great stuff, but most of the time it doesn't add to the structure of the actual song, and sounds like intended extended jamming. there are exceptions, like Another Lonely Christmas and Erotic City

Depressing? Eric Leeds & Atlanta Bliss playing is off the hook!

Too bad they're low in the mix, at least in my opinion.

I never cared for the I Wish You Heaven Part 2 or 3. The whole "tone" of the album version (spirituality, love, goodness) is ruined by the extended version. I also never cared for the extended Anotherloverholenyohead.

I can take or leave the extended Kiss, but absolutely love the extended Mountains.

To be serious: I love "Shockadelica"! It's just, if I had to go for perfection, I'd prefer the edited version!

I wish U heaven Pt. 2 & 3 are indeed overrated. People may glorify it because of the live version you can hear on the Lovesexy show in Dortmund.

I love the extended "I Wish U Heaven" but I think the weak link in the track is, ironically, "I Wish U Heaven" itself. great song on the album, but it doesn't work in the context of the rest of the extended parts. "Heaven" and "Take This Beat" would work better on their own, I think, as a b-side as-is based on "I Wish U Heaven" a la the "Purple Party Mix," "Violet The Organ Grinder" or the "New Power Generation" maxi-single tracks, instead of as continuation of the song.

no complaints though. one of my favorites.
