Why are we to believe what jtfolden says with regard to the birth and death of Prince and Mayte's baby and the album that came out after that? Is this person in an inner circle that can attest to all of what is said here? If not, where is the proof that what is stated is true? Changing your opinion of Prince or any video or anything else associated with this situation just does not make sense based only on this thread. And everyone doesn't deal with tragedy the same way. Frankly, though, I'm offended that anyone would say Prince is so heartless as to use his deceased child as promotion for an album.

You don't have to believe me and you don't have to be part of any inner circle. This stuff was widely available and the proof (such as links to the birth/death certificates) was posted here at the time all of this went down back around the time of the album release. There was even a legal enquiry into the death at the time. It may be news to NEW fans but it's old news in reality... nothing shocking and nothing surprising.

Furthermore, you can be offended all you want. WHY Prince went through with it, anyone is welcome to speculate, but the facts and the dates that all of it went down are readily available... and that's all I've been referring to here. That he lied is not speculation.

Huh?

The syntax is a little tortured, but that makes perfect sense, to me. shrug

How can anyone unfairly judge what Prince or Mayte did at the MOST difficult time in their lives?

Tragedies such as those, put people into a state of shock which can last months, even years.

The tragic part of death is not only about the one that is taken. It's the fact that life just goes on without them as if nothing has happened. Those in mourning, have to continue in that life, and while their body might be alive, they are on automatic pilot, going through the motions. But in reality, at that time, they are just a shell of who they are, and any spirit (or love of life if you prefer) they might have, is just absent, gone and dead.

Add having to go through the motions in the public light. The world would "know" their sorrow, but wouldn't "feel" it because it was not their own. The lonliness of suffering, without being a superstar is painful enough.

The whole album was planned to celebrate the birth with the world and in a split second, everything they believed to be true was turned upsidedown. How can you share that kind of "new truth" when you cannot even believe it yourself?

I don't know if there is something more painful than suffering the death of someone you love.

But I do know, that those who judge others for how they react, just do not have any idea or concept of how deep the pain is.

Thank you and amen.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

And just how do you know this for a fact? The man wasn't lying when he said he was ridiculed as a child. Just look at the emotion in his face and eyes..that is of a hurt man. He is of small stature and we know how cruel people can be. Prince dealt with alot growing up..that's obvious. Why he changed his name, we know, but that has nothing to do with him feeling "divorced from Prince" or why he created the symbol.

The name change is well documented. If you care to search for the interviews, you'll find his comments on it after he changed his name back.

Prince never legally changed his name.

How strange that one's interest would be so high as to cross-reference birth/death certificates with when a music video was made to be able to speak with such authority on the issue. In addition to being offended by your speculative statement, I am also questioning why it would be so important to you. As to "NEW fans," I am hardly that, having been around when all that you discuss was happening and YEARS before! That is not the issue. I just question what you are saying and whether he was lying or not depends on your personal interpretation.

You're completely assuming that a) I did the cross referencing myself, or b) that it's important to me. You'll also note that I really did no speculation in my posts at all, only stating that the publicity for the album at that point was a sham. It's everyone else delving into what was going through Prince's head at the time, I didn't do that as I don't know him. Given the title of this thread, the Oprah interview happens to be full of 'WTF' commentary and behavior.

In any case, the news concerning the baby was all over the online Prince community at the time (on thinking back, prince.org probably didn't exist so it would have been alt.music.prince or one of the other online communities like PML/PPML, etc). There was no "original research" done by me at all but fans from all over were posting the news as it hit from late October '96 through early '97 when those two assistants of Mayte's came forward and the reports of the official investigative enquiry hit fandom (and the press, of course,...ast detail).

Do you doubt that fans didn't discuss this to death when we frequently see people invading all aspects of his personal life here on a day to day basis? lol

OK, I know I'm an atypical org poster 'cause I give! wink I do remember all the hubbub surrounding this news. In fact, I embarrassedly admit that I tried to research Pfeiffers syndrome at the time. I also remember the Mojica twins getting fired (Of course, after the baby died, they would serve no purpose anyway). There WAS, as you said, plenty of discussion, enough for a book! Oh, and the Oprah interview....he DID give plenty of non-answers, but I don't want to get started on how I feel about her probing the most sensitive areas of EVERYONE's life in her interviews and how I don't know why people even allow her to do that! Yeah, I know, that's how she makes her living (and it's quite a living! neutral ), but....I'm starting to ramble. It's late........

in an 1981 interview with Steve Sutherland prince lied about both his age and the race of his mother. He also lied about his age on the American Bandstand appearance. He said he was 19 when he was 21.

The June 6th 1981 of NME (find on the prince in print website). has an interview. It says his dad is mixed race and he takes credit for writing 'partyup' and says that Regan is a better president that carter. oh he also says that he wrote the Dirty Mind album 'entirely out of experience.' . And that he doesn't see himself as black but Human (a theme we will see again)

My thoughts exactly, the man is gorgeous, I don't care what his background is! But its quite obvious (Emancipation/Come era especially) that both he and his mom, and I'd even say his father, have something directly in the lineage, cool that Prince acknowledges that. He should be proud of who he is..whatever the mix, its a perfect mix!

He very clearly states in this interview, which is available on picture disc all over the internet, that his father is "black" and his mother is "italian". Not "black and italian" or "italian with black" or any of that. He delineates the two as being separate and not equal (equal as in the same, not any other interpretation).

Oh, please, back track if you must. lol Someone incredulously questioned if you were serious "he did, at one point, join an organisation that required him to sell his soul and sacrifice a loved one

Do you realize that Prince was no more than probably 17-18 when he got involved with the Illuminati, like many other youngs stars.
