Live Prince's music sounds better with synths instead of horns

Prince started putting horns in his music after 1984,

while i love lot of horn licks in his songs i must say

Prince's music sounds

much better with synths instead of Saxophones and trumpets.

Especially in a live setting.

I was listening to recent live recordings by Prince and his performance

resembles more the original

Minneapolis sound .

I still like the horn section in the live versions of America & Anotherloverholeinyohead.

But other than that, I agree with you 100% that Prince's music with synths are better. nod

Personally, I just like the way he mixes it up. Some tours he uses horns, and some he doesn't. Both sound great to my ears (though as a horn player myself, I will always take horns over no-horns lol). I think this is one of the things he's refering to when he talks about changing band members to keep things fresh.

I prefer horns. I'm not sure of her name (cassandra?) But on the recent shows it sounds like she is playing keyboards while wearing boxing gloves.

Although there was something disheartening during 21 Nights where he just stood there holding down a key on the keyboard with familiar hits pouring out as samples...I know it's not the same thing, but how amazing would it have been to see the whole band play I wanna be your lover, when doves,TMBGITW,LRC,D&P etc...instead of a musical great using 1 finger on a keyboard with wobbly stand smile

Are you talking about actually -replacing- horn parts with synths, or just songs that are synth brass heavy? Because that's two separate things

Listen to Get on the Boat Viage 6/11/2010 and you can hear that this not true, very good version of the song, but with funky hornz could have been topped

i like both biggrin

especially the things renato does with the synth, that keeps things changing and fresh.

but on some songs real horns just sound more cool.

couldn't it just be a mix of both at a concert? or is that perhaps considered 'not done',

to have a horn section and only use them for 1/3 of a concert?

i could imagine those people would get all bored

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Horns all the way! Diamonds and Pearls is fundamentally flawed IMO due to the lack of horns.

I can see how in some instances it's nice to mix things up, but in general, let's leave them horns where they oughta be horns

For almost 25 years every Prince tour (except Symbol days) had horns

from having horns only where they have their function

Prince started over using horns

by putting them in songs like Let's Go Crazy,

Purple Rain.

Imagine live version of Bambi with horns eek eek eek

For the first time in many years Prince's

live sound feels stripped down and fresh.

The groove of the band flows perfect in combination

of 2 synths played by Cassandra and Renato

and bottom supplied by Blackwell and Ida.

Just listen to Viage show.

Best arangment of She's Always in my Hair ever smile
