wow, can't believe u havn't got it in u're collection 1 of the best known Prince songs is on it Little Red Corvette! It is a Prince album it was named 1999 becuz back then it was reported that the world would end at midnite on the 31/12/1999! The title song was played thruout the year at clubs and parties everywhere here in Australia! Prince also released a special 5 track cd in 1998 containing as follows in order:

1. 1999

2.Uptown

3.Controversy

4.Dirty Mind

5. Sexuality.

Iv'e heard that 3121 was named after either a hotel room that Prince has stayed in or a venue that he has played at. Not 100% sure but perhaps another orger can shed some further light on it 4 U! Perhaps it is taken from the bible eg; James 31:21.

Hope this helps u! And keep collecting it really is fun!

Prince once tried 2 change his name 2 a symbol so that ur'e mother couldn't find him in the phonebook!

And Btw...

let's get some facts straight:

as the FIRST black artist: Prince had a cross-over breakthrough on MTV in America - with this double LP "1999" - before - any other black major superstar.

Even before: Michael Jackson!

In the media, this credit always goes to Michael Jackson, "Michael was the first to have a breakthrough on MTV" - BUT, this isn't exactly the truth:

I wonder why Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" always gets the credit as the first Black artist's video on MTV - when in fact Michael was second to Prince....

Because: Prince's "1999" video had premiere on MTV in december 1982, according The Vault book, (released by swedish Uptown - and which is very based on facts). MJ's first music video off "Thriller", which was "Billie Jean" had premiere on MTV in march 1983. Same month, march 1983: Prince's second video "Little Red Corvette" had premiere on MTV.

So in fact Prince was the first major black artist to have a hit on american MTV. Not MJ and the other way around,

In fact, "Thriller" wasn't paving the way for Purple Rain, cuz Prince was there already with the "1999" album, (those 2 videos).

Note: we are talking about airing on MTV, "Off The Wall" did not get any premiere play in 1979, because of the fact that MTV wasn't launched until august 1981, there was no video to the Thriller leading single "The Girl Is Mine" (the Paul MacCartney & Michael Jackson duet),

not that it matters a big deal, both artists are / were brilliant at the time, Prince made a looong string of excellent albums from 1980 to 1988, 9 brilliant albums (if you count The Balck Album too), MJ releasing 2 albums in this decade, including "Thriller" - the biggest selling album in history.

MTV confirms that 1999 was shown on MTV in 1982,

- before Billie Jean, Beat It & Thriller in 1983.

Both were phenomenal artists back then,

"Thriller" was a record breaking album in many ways, a record that will stand forever,

but the first major black artist who had a breakthrough on MTV was:

Prince.

Now pleeeasee tell your friends the truth,

Prince's "1999" came on MTV before MJ's "Billie Jean"... wink

I absolutely LOVE this Prince masterpiece - "1999"... love

- and I love(d) MJ and "Thriller" too.

Those 2 superstars were phenomenal back then...... biggrin

I remember buying this at the wrecka stowe right out the box. Brilliant masterpiece. I've worn out the album and cd several times. Another gem in need of remastering. This album still sounds fresh today.

U R exactly right. Why no one wants to give credit to Prince is beyond me. U better announce this in the MJ forums. I bet U won't come out alive........1999 the single also was re-released after "Little Red Corvette" crossed over. It ended up being a another crossover hit for Prince eventually.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

^ Yeah, I would love to post this about "Prince - with the 1999 album and video - being the 1st on MTV" on their forums,

but... I don't think I have the balls to confront the Michael Jackson fans with these facts.....

They're gonna kill me.... razz

but if you - or anyone else feels like it, please do so:

Go on and post this on a MJ forum, and then tell your experience with the MJ fans here on prince.org.

Does anyone dare to do that.... ? wink cool

He was just being sarcastic. There's a baseline level of "knowledge" or "exposure" to Prince that is normally taken for granted here and that'd be one of them. If someone says they don't know the 1999 album and are not brand new fans, something is wrong.

Newsflash! There were black acts on MTV before Prince too, but few and far between. The demand for Michael's phenomenal 'Thriller' videos made it the norm for blacks to be on MTV thereafter. That's why he gets credited.
