That's in the ear of the beholder. I think "Poker Face" is a genius song for its genre.

IMO Prince has done the one thing that I always hoped he would not, he seems to be writing music in an attempt to please the listeners. 2010 was almost a trip down memory lane, and while I like the album and it is fun, it is very easy to get bored with because I feel that I have heard it all before.

I don't care if he produces hits, I just want that brave Prince back, who reaches into his soul and plays music that makes the hair on the back of our knecks stand up. Sounding 80's will get no respect from me, but surprising me will, and that is what I expect from Prince... surprises, not hits.

We are all so full of doody here

Funkomatic, what are you an A&R rep for Sony...

You gotta be with that mentality,

People do choose, what they listen to.

But... not really...

Record Companies control the airways and pretty much play russian roulette with artist.

If something sticks, they promote the hell out of it and watch their cash roll in.

If something doesn't stick, they kick the artist to the curb and go to the next turkey.

It's completely leech mentality...

It wasn't always liked this, but free downloads have fucked up the music industry,

And the record companies can't afford to take chances on "good music" anymore

So they go with safe music, and use most of their power to finger their ways into radio, controlling what goes on. It's basic physics

If you control the influx of artist on the airways, people will listen to it, it's only a matter of time.

They'll listen or they'll stop listening to radio, like I and many others have.

And if you listen to something enough times... You'll probably start liking it...

The human mindset is pretty easy to manipulate...

So its mass musical brainwashing.

And thats whats keeping them in business.

I've interned at Columbia Records... This is how it goes down.

These people are shaking in their boots, because they know they're becoming obsolete... fast...

Prince started the trend 15 years ago...

And now everybodies jumping on the band wagon.

"Hits" are meaningless once you build a legion of fans that will support you.

NPGMC was like the first of its kind, it brought the Artist and the Fans together with no middle man

now every artist has a fan site like it.

thats the future...

^Ah, the good old days...I like me some brainwashed Prince fans.

Still: record companies can provide hype. They can't provide hits!

Does it take away too much from Prince's genius to admit that his music doesn't hit anymore?

Name a top 40 hit in the last 5 years that wasn't backed by a record company. Indie and major

Outside of live shows, i personally think Prince is done! Stick a fork in him, folks stoned

Its alright if you can't

I can

"Bodysnatchers" from Radiohead's self released album In Rainbows, reached number 8 in 2008.

how'd it do that?

They gave away their song for free.

The "Hype" machine is indeed Obsolete, but it still controls everything.

because they are the only non label top 40 hit...

That's certainly not true - for one Prince hit #3 with the Most Beautiful Girl In the World, which was self released through NPG records.

it was distributed by bellmark, released by NPG records.

Another example - KC of KC and the sunshine band self released the song Give It Up through his own MECA records (which he created specifically to release that song and an associated album), which hit #18.

I really don't see how it's different - weather you use a label name or not, starting your own label for the sole purpose of releasing your own project is self released.

And the radiohead album was released on CD in the US by TBD Records, roughly the same thing as Prince using bellmark records

Bellmark is not what they call a "True Independent" it was used extensive by warner & universal for "not so heavy" release stuff, And Like these labels often do, distribute other labels also associated with the biggies, as you see in the wikipedia (BTW never quote wikipedia for all you know I could've written that entry)

A True Independent is something like A&M was in the 60's, before it was absorbed by universal. Or bloodshot records based in chicago. Usually cranking out full albums, singles you name it. and solo distribution.

These operations have become abysmal, because since the collapse of the industry, indies have been struggling as well.

Most indies are pretty much used like "outsourcing" by labels

They where used for distribution, they didn't sign under the label.

Yea he could and you all know it. Look at Cher she had her biggest hit over thirty years into her career. Prince still has the cool factor. Some people say hes weird but I never hear anybody say the man can't play. Eccentric entertainers seem to have the ability to just suddenly put a hit out when they really want to. I like his current output though. I still jam 2010. I mean the music on there is only about three months old. I guess I'm one of the few out there that still really likes Princes music. It seems his "fans" think he should retire. However P please dont. Give me youre Lotus Flowers, 3121, and Musiclology. Without you what am I gonna listen to? Some shitty angry rappers, or perhaps some boring ass indie rock that makes me wanna fall asleep. Without Prince music is dead for me. Dance 4 Me

No, the mainstream has moved on a long time ago. He didn't even score a hit during the Musicology era with all the hype and support, that was his only chance. No matter what he writes, it won't be turned into a hit. There are hundreds of artists with the same situation, it just comes out with Prince more prominently because he never ever stopped recording music and is still able to write a catchy hook (yes, he did, on LotusFlow3r for example). It's not like you can find an artist who started out more than 15 years ago that still regularly scores hits in the US. Even U2's last album was completely devoid of any hit singles, even though the first one was as commercial as it could get.

Call My Name still gets a good bit of radio play where I live. Black Sweat from 3121 gets played to. I think hes had songs that the public knows but they were'nt top 40 hits swept up by 13 and 14 year olds. Its also not uncommon to hear Future Baby Mama here.

Quite frankly, I don't think anyone this day and time can write a hit anymore. The diversity of music at the fingertips is more vast than it has ever been. The internet is not dead, but I believe Prince knows that the radio indeed is.

Not sure where the thread has complete gone but...

Can Prince produce a hit...YES HE CAN!!! But does he care if he does or not anymore??? Nope, doesn't seem like it. He seems set to just put out whatever songs he wants. There aren't even music videos to his songs anymore...which is like THE BEST way to get attention now cause you can pop it onto Youtube/Vevo and the song can take over from that alone! But since Prince is OPPOSED to youtube and things like it, and hasn't seemed to care about radio, especially American radio, for a long time now, he's pretty much screwed himself over. He's killing his own career slowly but surely. He used to have fans come in faster than they went out, but it's kinda the other way around now. Everyone is video obsessed, and Prince isn't. For once, Prince is BEHIND!

GOOD music videos lol Crimson and Clover is a great cover, lame few hour shoot. Chocolate Box as a song sounds like an outtake from the Purple Rain era, and not in a good way. And the video was TERRIBLE! Not not memorable at all. He's better than those! The last good video was Black Sweat, least then he was still sexy, even though he wasn't moving much...

that comment is just not believable. He tried and cared as much as anyone ever has to be a hitmaker for years and years...he just hasn't come with what the pop audience wants anymore so he's wisely just gone back to doing Prince music. I thought "Black Sweat" was going to get him back in the Top 40. Had that song came out when he hit that nostalgia peak after the grammys instead of musicology it would've been his first top 10 since tmbgitw. musicology was the wrong album at what was the right time
