Damn I almost can't believe it when people say they don't like a single song on 3121!!! I know everyone has different tastes, but for me "The Dance" is the single best song of the last decade Prince has done... how anyone couldn't at least agree its a good song despite not liking it is beyond me lol razz

I have to agree!! On every Prince cd, I have found AT LEAST 3 great songs!!! I can't even fathom people saying they can't find at least 1 eek Prince is an amazing musician and continues to shine. Some of his songs aren't on my list of can't do without, but there is always a few diamonds in the rough!! And usually his live performances inhance the songs for me!!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Thanks my friend.

Of all the ones you listed, I consider The One, The Word, Black Sweat and 3121 to be OK, (I would upgrade 3121 to "very good" when performed live as it has the extra dose of energy the song needs), again my personal taste.

The others, not so much. All the fluff on Planet Earth the track took what could have been an interesting song and turned it into a carnival. It felt like they were trying to take a song half as good as All My Dreams and make a 2007 version of it.

The other tracks you listed on Planet Earth are actually dreadful to me. I can take The One You Wanna See in small doses, but the lyrics just destroy my ability to truly derive enjoyment from it.

I'm glad you agreed about "The One" because I think it gets a bad rap here on P.org. At least, I'd read long stretches of people saying how boring or monotonous it is. And it's funny because I hate the live version of "3121" cuz it's too fast. The studio (well, live studio) version has that steady, stank groove like other Power Trio collabs like "Peach", "What's My Name", and "Da Bang". (Albeit with little to no crazy solos like on WMN and DB.)

The track "Planet Earth", for me, revisits what I liked about songs like "Strays of the World", "Gold", "Crystal Ball", and "The Love We Make" in that it has that slow, haunting, epic feel to it. I wouldn't lump it with tracks like "Purple Rain", "The Ladder", or "Positivity" simply because it lacks key parts to those tracks' core. But it's still a solid track, I think, mainly because it elaborates on melodic and lyrical themes last seen (at that point) on TRC and I thought TRC lacked a real epic to it. Hell, I think "Planet Earth" borrows from things like "Open Book" and "Others Here With Us" too. But I really do just love the song a lot and it might all boil down to opinions.

I am always shocked by this!! I love this song!!!!!!! It's one of my favorites, of course I think it's alot better LIVE, but overall, I adore this song!!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Can't believe no one's mentioned "Reflection" or "Somewhere Here On Earth". Those are 2 of his most heartfelt and evocative ballads of the past decade, maybe ever.

IMO 3121 and Musicology have a couple of decent tracks each, but no GREAT ones.

There's a few others like that too.

I think that used to be a given. (An old Rolling Stone article said something like, "Prince's chaff is better than most artists' wheat," which was easy for me to agree with at the time.) But I don't hear anything truly great on Planet Earth, MPLSound, or 20ten (some good things, sure, but not at the level of greatness). I hope that's not a trend that continues.

Planet Earth's great songs:

Planet Earth

Guitar

Somewhere Here on Earth

Future Baby Mama

MPLSound's great songs:

Dance 4 Me

U're Gonna C Me

Better with Time

Old School Company

No More Candy 4 U

20ten's great songs:

Compassion

Beginning Endlessly

Future Soul Song

Sticky Like Glue

Lavaux

This is really what makes Prince the greatest of all to me. I can honestly say that I like or love multiple songs of every album that he has released. And considering is prodigious output over the past 32 years, that is an umatched feat. Of course it's all subjective, but looking at the past 10 years alone I can point out great songs off each release. What makes him even more impressive is that the "great" songs off those album will differ based on the diverse musical tastes of different listeners, again making is accomplishments all the more fascinating to me. Some of my recent favs:

TRC - Last December, Everywhere, TRC

One Nite Alone - Objects in the Mirror, Have a Heart, U're Gonna C Me, Avalanche

Musicology - Marrying Kind, Reflection, A Million Days, Call My Name

3121 - 3121, Black Sweat, The Word, The Dance (prefer this version though both are great)

Planet Earth - SHOE, Planet Earth, FBM

Lotusflow3r - Colonized Mind, Dreamer, Back to the Lotus

MPLSound - U're Gonna C Me (love both versions), Better with Time, Dance 4 Me

20Ten - Act of God, Sticky Like Glue, Future Soul Song, Walk in Sand

I think some of these songs are among his career best. They are certainly better than some other artists' all-time best.

perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
