Oh, it's three lines. I knew there would be those who'd diasagree. At least I refrained from calling Larry "the antichrist," as I usually do, ha, ha. wink

Personally, I think some of Prince's subsequent albums were rather good, like The Chocolate Invasion and 3121, but I made a general assessment that also corresponds with most Danish critics who have usually characterized following prince and Prince releases as "Prince Light" (referring to the Danish cigarette brand), "disappointing," "aimless jamming" and "embarrassing." neutral

I've commented on this as well. I love these posts, but the personal commentary just makes it seem tacky and amateur.

Seriously, it's professional quality work. Then, in this case, "three lines" turns what could be outstanding, and legit, journalism into fan made bs.

it's not that you've said something that's factually wrong or even something that most people would disagree with, it's just in a factual peice it's better to leave personal comments out. you could say something like "this work was considered by many fans to be..."

the thing is, the rainbow children and one night alone were also great albums, and more consistent than emancipation. i made my own 1 disc compilation taking most of the slow/mellow tracks from disc 2 and then adding the other similar tracks from disc 1 and 3 and into the light and i will, and empty room on the end and it made a fantastic disc of what i would say is some of his best material, and would perhaps have been a critically acclaimed album. if it was grouped that way on one disc, and perhaps the other discs were re-arranged so all the faster stuff was together it might have worked better. the other thing is that dropping a couple of tracks you could have stuck the whole thing on two full 80 minute discs (ie. losing 20 mins), or he could have put on an extra 80 minutes and included all the other tracks he removed. same with crystal ball, i think it's 3 disc of 50 mins that would have fitted on 2 discs, and kamasutra and truth would have nearly fitted on 1 disc

Nice compilation of info and interesting to see timeline of configs. If I can just say that he didn't lip synch the lead vocal for Sleep Around on Oprah. It's not great but it's definitely not lip synched. There's a clip on a certain website. I just checked.

Fatastic contibution - thanks for posting.

Emanciaption is the first Prince album i was disappointed about. mainly because it came after my favourite period 1992-1996 from love symbol to C&D. but also because it was a move from REAL instruments to the plastic sounding programmed music which everyone was doing and still is.

As a result i stopped buying Prince albums on the day of release until i was wowed again by TRC.

Thank you for all the inside info. ...I remember at the time (`96) - I did not know what really happened with the baby. We found out later. But by seeing the story again, I can't even imagine going through what he and Mayte went through. My heart hurts for them.

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

I think I'll do just that. Thank you for the suggestion. biggrin

I think the slow/mellow tracks are the best of Emancipation, too. I love One Kiss At A Time, Soul Sanctuary, Dreamin' About U, The Holy River, etcetera. But New World and The Human Body are personal favorites, too. biggrin

yeahthat times 1 billion.

I don't understand how anyone could read such an in depth, informative piece and respond by saying, "refrain from putting your personal perspective in here because it turns it into something amateurish".

Huh?

For something that means as much as this does to Scifi, I'd just assume him give us 50% facts and 50% opinions. That's what makes this site fun isn't it? Engaging in discussions/sharing opinions etc.

Either way, calling the posts tacky or bs or whatever some of you guys are calling it is really way out in left field.

Scifi, I'd like to echo some of the thoughts out here by thanking you for the thread and casting a vote for MORE of your opinions in the future, if you are so inclined.

I remember there being talk (even a photo?) about a Da, Da, Da promo. I've seen it on eBay. But I think the remixes were fakes. Perhaps even the promo? the whole thing showed up for about 3 seconds on the online fanbase's radar in late '96 or early '97, never to be heard from or brought up again.

I suppose I could respond, "I don't like people who criticize writing when they're not writers,” to the critics, ha, ha. wink But you know, "everyone's a critic," and some of it I have taken to heart (and changed in the text) and other things not so much. All of the "thank you"s that's been posted counts as criticism, too, and all in all I'm quite pleased with the feedback that's been posted so far. Even the negative, because, quite frankly, I half expected worse when I wrote the epilogue. biggrin
