This list while subjective, is a testament to the growing appreciation for the man and his music.

I remember the original Vh1 special that aired and if I remember correctly, the list was voted on by fellow musicians at the time.

Whereas his persona and music in the 1990s was generally slept on by the public, he now is seen as the elder statesman of the 1980s. From the RRHOF performance in 2004, Grammys with Beyonce, and the SuperBowl, his public profile grew and the public figured out what us fans have known for years.

Not everyone is complaining about MJ's rank,it's just the bitter MFs that constantly try to undermine success of legendary artists in hopes that Prince might look better. Nothing people say or do on this forum is going to do that people. I wont say that this list is definitive, but they've got the right idea.

Here's the way it is: NO ONE from the 80s (Prince included) should be listed higher than any of the top 21 on this list on ANY list of the greatest ARTISTS of all time, based solely on the impact those folks had on the music scene.

NO ONE who came on the scene after Prince should be listed any higher than he is on ANY list.

As for Michael Jackson being listed higher than Prince on ANY ARTISTIC list...

i think it's kind of a coup for Prince to be at 7. Before Elvis, ha. I don't totally agree, but it's nice to see.

Meanwhile George Clinton was at 49, which was also a surprisingly strong showing.

I think we care because it's nice to see artists we love get respected publicly. And we worry that because no one ever talks about, say, Van Morrison, it means they've forgotten how great Moondance is. It's also fun to yell about how Paul Simon is better than Coldplay, whatever that means.

Justin Timberlake's at #66, after 2 albums. Sigh. One day Timbaland will get his due credit. Timbaland > Timberlake.

Lastly, the folks in music non prince are angry about Janet Jackson again. They're very intense about Janet Jackson over there. It's so funny.

I really don't enjoy Bruce Springsteen. Never have. It's the look, the voice, the music. He couldn't be from any other country on the planet he's so stereotypical. Okay, maybe Australia.

I also don't like celery. Never have.

It's funny but with both of the above I have really tried but ultimately my taste just won't accept them.

I have yet to hear any artists as innovative, artistic, or clever as the Beatles, so I do not see them ejected from the top spot anytime soon.

Some of the elder statesmen like Dylan get well deserved respect, but i see him and the likes of Elvis and MJ as having been eclipsed by many other artists long ago.

Mj is more a cultural icon than an artistic icon. Way too many artists eclipsed him almost immediately but did not have the kid appeal that has kept MJ relevant.

Prince's 80's work is almost Beatles-like un-paralleled. But his 90's and later work is so bad that the stigma from that work will keep him from ever reaching Beatles-like genius status. That's ok, top 20 is still pretty good.

Rolling Stones. They were there at the beginning man! U2? Stadium band, albeit very, very good. Although only when the Edge is on form do their albums shine.

Haven't looked through the list in any depth but how about The Faces for their part and especially for the voice of Rod Stewart. Cracking band back in their day and no English pub band's set-list is complete without one of their tracks.

And what about ELO? Or Status Quo? Iron Maiden must surely be in there along with Black Sabbath and the likes. Highly influential bands or at least unique and popular.

i disagree about bowie....his run of albums in the 70s were brilliant, each almost competely different to the last one.....bowie deserves to be in the top 10 of all time next to prince imo....

Agreed. Bowie was a very transformative figure in the history of rock music and his 1970s output is equal to Prince's in terms of artistic merit.
