The song is about a girl that left him and he goes and kills her. Think about it!

It's funny that anyone would think otherwise, I got this notion from my very first listen.

Anyway, I thought is was pretty obvious, guess not.

Thinking about it now, If ya think it's about his child, y'all digging way to deep.

[Edited 8/12/10 12:30pm]

I think it's the relationship and any amicable feelings.. the connection that is dying. NOt literally like Bob George.

Seriously, you have to quit thinking that about this song! How does his baby have a gat totin' other, perfume and stockings?!? Some of us may have been born with a penchant for two of those, but going all gangsta in infancy is a little much, even for P's offspring.

Supa, go listen to the other two songs, those are about the baby, NOT Wasted Kisses!!! fryingpan

going gangsta at infancy spit

lol

It's still the only thing that I can think of when I hear this song. and look, all these years later nobody is clear if it's gut-torn, gun totin or gat totin!

Somebody is clear on it, me! hammer

It's definitely gat totin', put on headphones and listen very closely...

Wasted kisses was a red herring apparently

I heard that 'until you're in my arms again' is the song written for his child. The lyrics make sense.

Overdue, that's how I describe the hour, the minute the moment that I first laid eyes on you...

The first time Prince sees his baby. Think about how much Prince must have wanted kids and think of how agonizing it must have been for him to have to wait 9 months for this moment. Certainly "overdue" could describe the length of time for him to finally be able to lay eyes on his own child for the first time.

I guess I knew, that sooner or later this power, would manifest itself into a rendezvous...

The song is about kisses right? The power he is speaking of is the power of the kiss. Think of the power that a kiss holds. Enough to make two people want to be inside each other. Power enough to lead him and his wife in the DANCE ELECTRIC-sexual union. Kissing...leading to sex...leading to pregnancy...leading to the baby's birth...leading to the moment he first laid eyes on the baby.

Small dark room, that's where I let you smother, in front of your gut torn (lyrics are questionable as to gut torn) mother, why should I care?...

Wasn't Prince's baby on life support at some point? So say that this part of the song Prince is reminiscing of being in the hospital where he and Mayte are faced with making the final decision on whether to keep the little baby alive on machines or let him rest in peace and pull the plug. If the baby's life support system was finally shut off, most likely this would have caused the baby to smother and gasp for final breaths.

Why does he say Gut torn? I think this lyric is Gut Torn and can be taken in two ways. Gut torn--Mayte's gut is torn from having to make this decision on her precious son. Have you never been gut torn over a situation? I'm sure like most of us, you have. OR Gut torn...literally. Having just given birth, her gut is torn from the experience of child birth. I think it would be both at the same time. Also, he says "Why should I care", I take this as him not wanting to care because it is just too much but you can tell by the way he sings the word "CARE" in the song that he really does care.

Cheap perfume all over those burgundy stockings, the ones I tied you up with I should have just left em there...

Perhaps this line is directed at Mayte. Remember how scripted Prince's marriage and the pregnancy were? They got married on Valentines day, that night conceived, 9 months later thay had a baby. What if on the night they conceived, Prince tied Mayte up with those perfumed burgundy stockings? If he had just "left em there", they may not have had the sexual union that led to the conception of their doomed child.

Why did I waste my kisses on you...

Sounds cold but those kisses led to death. They were wasted...

good work..but your grasping, at best.

Listen butch...your blatant hypocrisy is too much of an easy target for me to be bored about..lol..

It's not personal, I have no interest in you...I'm sure you can be a nice lesbian, at times...was just making a broader point about taking responsibility.

I love this line. You have no interest and yet waste your time replying to me falloff

I actually like your analysis of the first line beginning, "Overdue..."

I meant to say I have no interest in starting a conflict with you...I phrased it wrong so it sounded harsh...

Don't agree with the rest of the analysis, but it's appreciated that you took the time and effort to do it from the depths of your spirit...that makes it worthwhile..

Until U're In My Arms Again could fit 4 the baby but i can hardly believe that lyrics about the baby would sound that much like a break-up song. Besides, a dead person can't come back and be in one's arms again (even thru reincarnation unless such person reincarnates in the same family and the parents recognize him/her which is very unlikely 2 happen), so the lyrics would be more something like "Until i join u where u r".

As 4 Wasted Kisses, the lyrics according to the DTT are as follow (no mention of "your mother", it's "u smother"!!!) and thinking it's about the baby sounds as weird to me as thinking that Strange But True was about Vanity.

Why did I waste my kisses on U, baby?
Why did I waste my kisses on U now?
Why did I waste my kisses on U, baby?
Why did I waste my kisses on U now?

Overdue — that's how I described the hour
The minute, the moment that I first laid eyes on U
I guess I knew that sooner or later this power
Would manifest itself into a rendezvous

Small dark room — that's where I let U smother
In front of your [gut, tell another]
Why should I care?
Cheap perfume all over those burgundy stockings
The ones I tied U up with
I shoulda just left 'em there (Shoulda just left 'em there)
Why'd I waste my kisses on U?

Why did I waste my kisses on U, baby?

CHORUS

Why'd I waste my kisses on U, baby? (On U)
Why did I waste my kisses on U now?
Why'd I waste my kisses on U, baby? (On U)
Why did I waste my kisses on U now?

it's a gun. lol

Urban Dict:

Old slang, meaning gun. Came from shortening Gattling gun to just gat. Was used during the prohibition era to name any gun, but specifically the thompson submachine gun, aka The Tommy Gun.

Hmm...I never knew it was old school, thought it was a new kid thing. err

You know it's also possible that P is conflating his son and Mayte/girl in this song--projecting his (irrational but nevertheless human) anger over his son's death onto the female character. Rather than consciously acknowledging and writing about that, though, he creates a fictional scenario where the scapegoat for his anger is a woman. And since Mayte was, in one sense, "responsible" for the child's death (I don't mean logically, of course, but emotionally--emotions aren't logical), the jump from one person to the other makes a certain amount of sense.

Don't get me wrong: I think the literal storyline of the song definitely revolves around an erotic relationship b/t an adult man and woman; but I don't think someone who had to take their child off life support so recently could put that heart monitor/flatline bit into the song without in some sense channeling the emotions connected with it.

If you read/watch the interviews (Oprah, Gumble) and listen to the songs (When U're in My Arms, Comeback, Wasted Kisses) from this time period, it's obvious that P had a hard time directly confronting his child's death, and it obviously tore him and Mayte apart. It makes sense to me that if he couldn't face those emotions head-on, he might explore them more metaphorically and in a medium like music where he approach them indirectly.

This whole period in Prince's life is so hearbreaking. I often wonder how his life and career might have turned out if the child was born healthy...

Overdue – that's how I described the hour
The minute, the moment that I first laid eyes on U
I guess I knew that sooner or later this power
Would manifest itself into a rendezvous

The minute he saw this person, he knew he'd end up fucking her.

Small dark room – that's where I let U smother

Why should I care?
Cheap perfume all over those burgundy stockings

I shoulda just left 'em there (Shoulda just left 'em there)

She sucked his dick in a small dark room and he took her stockings off and tied her up. She was obviously dating a thug-type. "Why should I care?" meaning he doesn't give a shit if the guy has a gun or not.

Nothing about marriage, kids, the Pope, Paisley Park, the price of tea in China, etc. It's not difficult.
