Everyone keeps referring to Automatic by the Pointer Sisters which I can hear too. However I remember when that song came (Yes I am officially 255yrs old) and thinking how Princey that was, even the gravelly main vocal.

I like the song and the music, not so much that synth, cause I feel like I should be doing an eighties montage when I hear it. 'Lets go get that Electric Boogaloo prize!'

This track reminds me of two other songs

The first being the synth hook from Human Leagues 'Facination'

then i realised that the synth line sounds like the refrain in 'life can be so nice'.

Go listen and see what i mean.

It's funny that folks keep referencing The POinter Sisters "Automatic", because of the similar synth part.

It's funny, because that was in 1984, and The Pointer Sisters were clearly and deliberately going 4 Prince's sound... that and a bit of Stevie.

Everyone was trying to do Prince in the 80's. OMG do you remember Ready For the World? (Guess they weren't) Everyone is still trying to catch up with him if you ask me. I wonder if MIGHTY WB will push some of these tracks to the radio?

Great question. They should, there's some hot cuts on here that would work on radio and I think Lavaux could be one of them.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I'm gettin a little strange relationship in there too?>!>? anyone? Bueller...Bueller...Bueller?!!? Bueller dammit!!!lol

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

If some act had lifted a riff of Prince's the org would be hungry for blood. Since it's Prince, it's just a cute nod or homage.

It's ultimately a sign of how vacant the idea bank is. Yeah, let's re-imagine "Automatic" by the Pointer Sisters and put that on the new record. Great quality control, Prince. The song does sound like it might get marginally interesting at 2:55, so I'm tempted to say unfortunately it ends at 3:00, but given it was nothing more than a stolen horse, it's another recent Prince composition that is best put out to pasture as soon as possible.

No hard feelings.

Whats the big deal with the "automatic" comparisons?

Does that really make any difference in how much you enjoy the track?

It shares a few of the same chords but they arent similar enough for me to say that he was deliberately copying.

Many artists have jacked Prince riffs in the past when he was on top and it never bothered him.

As a fan of groups such as the Bar-Kays, I could really care less if he was inspired by the pointer sisters track anyway,If it sounds good I will happily listen. It could even be argued that they were trying to do Prince on that song in the first place.

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

There is another interesting aspect of this song, if you read about The Vineyards of Lavaux. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1243 It's a place where people have lived in harmony with the land and protected it for about 1000 years, while profiting from it's resources. (mmm... wine). The people have protected this area from encroaching urbanization. I think it's a message that we can live in harmony with our surroundings, keep them beautiful and prosper without ravaging the land, water and air. Lavaux is a good model to study for how we can do this in our own land - the signs are all around us that it is time.

Similar topic - I'm currently reading a book called "1491, New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus". This books speaks about the great evidence that the Americas supported populations of people much larger than commonly believed - through living in harmony with the land and creating very little impact on the environment.

I guess you werent around in the 80s. PS's Automatic was inspired by Prince. This reminds me of all the times all the youngin's here accused Prince of ripping of D'angelo...LOL.

The guy who referenced Human League and Life can be so nice...has it right. The little keyboard riff was quite common in the 80s.

"Lavaux" is so awesome. I just keep playing this one over and over again. To me, it perfectly recaptures the wonderful pop experimentation of the late-Revolution era. When I hear it most is when Prince sings that vamp at 2:35 that goes, "Lavaux-ohohohohoh." It sounds so much like the stuff he was recording with Wendy and Lisa before it all imploded. Brilliant work here, Prince! clapping

I love this CD period... just like I loved LotusFlower.... completely different kind of disc and nearly as strong and just as consistent!

I am really feeling Prince these days!
