why he'd want for us to feed their machine when he's sung so many songs dissing them i have no idea.

Because Prince, like many other artists, is a contradiction. He's only saying things that benefit only him. It's like just because he won't sell his stuff online or claim that selling music online is a "dying fad" doesn't mean everyone should play follow the leader. This is PRINCE here. He's not a rocket scientist. lol

i see. guess he wont be joining the rest of the human race as we evolve into caring, sharing people then huh.

Think about it though, on one hand you can say he cares that his fans buy his music, and BECAUSE record stores are fading and he feels fans may get ripped off, that he proposes fans to buy them as they read magazines (and in this case in the UK, tabloid gossip mags), but on the other hand, he wants to make sure he gets a lot of money out of it. I think because he knows he's only making major money off his Warner masters rather than his more indie work that this is why he went to distribute the album to major US record companies and then sell the CD at concerts (Musicology era) and then do the newspaper route because, I guess, he fears he may not get profit out of it. Remember he did sign a $100 million deal with WB because he wanted major pay to do whatever he wanted and he couldn't do that if his number-one goal was to keep making great music.

Now if fans think the album's hot, then that's their opinion and of course Prince is grown and he's gonna do what he's gonna do so of course it'll probably benefit the people, since they're getting it for free with the newspaper/magazine purchases, but if the album's hot dooky, then fans will make threads here talking about they got ripped off.

The real reason Prince is saying the internet is dead, is because he has been brain washed by the WTS (Jehovah's Witnesses). They have this hugh campaign for its members against the internet because there is all sorts of factual unflattering info about the JW organization all over the internet.

Most of the JWs who used be regular posters on this site no longer post because of this anti-internet campaign.

It's been theorized that the music industry could never make another Prince. Or Jay-Z, Kid Rock, Metallica, AC/DC or the Beatles, for that matter. The media landscape is simply too decentralized, music fans too distracted, recording valuations too depressed to produce such mega-superstars again. History will judge that theory, but in the here-and-now, stars-of-old have to make some serious choices about their legacies.

Who knew that Prince was so out-of-touch. But outside the superfan contingent, hardly anyone knows that a new Prince album even exists. And perhaps that's the point. Sure, iTunes is not sending Prince a hefty advance for 20Ten, they take a handsome piece of the sale, and they offer only modest amounts of consumer data. But they'll definitely make it easy for fans to find the album, and they just might promote the release as well. It will exist.
So why restrict? Certainly, it's more profitable to sell a traditional CD or site-served album download. A covermount deal has an advance. But just like the old days, music remains an impulse buy, and that impulse often strikes in Apple's home court. The content has to be everywhere, even if the terms are unfulfilling - or nonexistent - over there.

Newer artists play the iTunes game, simply because they have no other choice! The hounds of obscurity will consume anyone that demands premium profit over presence. But wait: superstars-of-old face the same reality, at least if they want to continue to build their musical legacies.
And, there's no better time to start a band or release new material than right now, simply because there's no other time available! Want to wait until 2015? It rarely works that way, so artists had better maximize their prospects now while the creative energy is highest.
Then again, not everyone is fighting the tide. Radiohead and Trent Reznor are still innovating, so why can't Prince move beyond the covermount?

Too bad, because Prince - and any artist with an older core - has it relatively easy. Sure, younger fans will steal the album, cherry pick a few tracks if they pay, balk at expensive tickets, and plop Prince into a collection of 20,000 MP3s. But older fans will purchase an overpriced disc, and those whose mortgages are still intact might even attend a show or buy a DVD.
In fact, that's the saving grace for many older acts. Susan Boyle only has a modest presence online, but her disc sales are fantastic. Who says the album bundle is dead? Turns out that the artists enjoying that rare combination of mainstream awareness and older interest are the real winners right now. At least until this industry figures out how to create another generation of Princes.

I love how a large majority on here act like they've never hunted down a outrageously priced Prince bootleg or downloaded some music illegally prior to this epic internet shattering event! Please cut the crap. We've all bootlegged some Prince material in the past and we're all going to do it again in the future. Stop acting like Prince is asking you to climb Everest to get the next CD. If you want it you'll do what you need to to get it. The truth of record stores is that they really don't exist in most cities any longer. If you don't like Prince's methods of distribution then don't support the product he's distributing (but we know that's asking entirely too much of most orgers). All of the whining about he's not making it "convenient for me to get" is pathethic. You'll be on your computer on July 10th searching for the first person/site to make a download available (in your pajamas while drinking tea nonetheless). Oh the inconvenience!!!

In other words, you're the exact reason why Prince's current business model makes more sense than using traditional models.

Nope.

In other words, it's my money and I expect Prince to market his wares in areas convenient to me not convenient to him - if he wants me to part with said money. I've purchased every album of Prince's from For You to 3121. Planet Earth, LotusFlower, and 20TEN have been marketed in ways which prevent me from obtaining them without going more out of my way than I am willing. If I can't get it online via Amazon or iTunes, then he doesn't want my money.

Edit: BTW - the money I would've spent on those albums wouldn't even go to Prince. They'd go to the newspapers or Target and I have no desire to give money to those organizations.

[Edited 7/7/10 15:46pm]

Sorry but that doesnt hold much water. Unless you were in Australia or someplace for PE there was plenty of opportunity to purchase that through any record store or even through Itunes... 20TEN will be available via conventional means as far as anyone knows via WB in the countries where papers deals aren't struck, so there probably isn't any reason why you wouldnt be able to purchase that as well.

The money you spend at record stores doesn't go directly to the artist either, you're recouping what the stores purchase.

The fact is, people don't like paying for music when they can get it for free. Thats the new music business landscape and all artists and music labels have to adjust to that.

Change it one more time..

Unless you're in one of the countries where this is being given away with a paper or magazine, what relevance do you statements have to Prince's distribution of this album? If youre saying adults will still buy CD's and its mainly the younger crowd "shares" music, then by the time this is released in the US there won't have been much of a gap in availability. People release albums at different times in different markets everyday! Studios release movies in different markets at different times everyday... I'm failing to see what all this talk is about.

Way to totally miss the point.

Prince cares more about being PAID for the work than people HEARING the work.

The people living in territories where the album isn't going to be released simply don't matter to him any more. He doesn't give a fuck.

How do I know? Because this album isn’t for all time. It’s for one day. And if you miss that day, you'll have to buy a Rapidshare account, to hear it in bad quality, or learn to use torrents.

If you can't pay for it, your ears don't matter. And that goes for posterity.

This has never stopped anyone from getting the Prince music they wanted. This time will be no different. Someone will post it with great sound quality and everyone will go apeshit to download it.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Ok, Prince proves once again, that he is not in touch with the real world.

As we all know, Prince says the internet is "completely over". By not releasing his music online, he is NOT doing himself any favors. By this short-sighted view, he will end up increasing the illegal downloading of his new album.

Yes, it will be released for "free" this Saturday on CD, but it will be available the same day on the internet everywhere.

Another dumb move, by a notoriously short-sighted genius.

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time Prince fan, this is my first post here....but Prince is far from out of touch about the internet.

I think Prince means the internet is over as in... it's not necessary for HIM in relation to his business, the way he initially thought it would/could be. He was the first to give it a real go, and even won a webby. Prince really does GET tech. But he doesnt sell tech, he sells **rights** to his music, and for everyone doing that, the internet isn't so great, really.

He also mentions looking for viable distribution channels for his music, and since he makes music the old fashioned, expensive way...he needs advances. I dont blame him actually, and Apple is really dumb NOT to give Prince an advance on an exclusive album....there would be such incentive for him to go above and beyond .....I bet we'd get more Black Sweat and less filler from the vault.

His comments are brilliant actually with just enough tongue in cheek to make people lose their minds over it..... he knows how to get people talking.

He doesnt give a rats azz about selling cds anymore. He wants bodies in the seats at the live shows because he can rake in millions, so this was a publicity stunt he got paid for handsomely.

Good for him. If I could get to europe I'd be at every show I could be. smile

I'm actually kinda shocked the album isn't easy to locate safely via Google yet. It's not "out there" like people have been claiming. (What's going on within here is a different story.) Just be careful when searching. Many downloading/torrent sites are virus traps, and I don't even feel like going through that over this, lol. bored

Does music business equal selling his music to tabloids? lol

I guess this is a way for him to get whatever pay he hopes in getting once people get the album in their hands. Sensing he had already done this before, it's not entirely a new way but he probably feels good selling his music this way least internationally.

ur right. Prince is an impoverished man, he just lives day by day, barely scraping through.

oh the suffering he must endure, to only have 63 million dollars, instead of a billion.

is it any wonder he cant afford to eat.
