"M A L E" singers....Im convinced that the allure of this song is a man singing it

IIWYG is not supposed to be sung by a male singer, hence the Camille voice; at least, that's what I think...

Prince COMPLETELY crossed the line of androgynous/gay/weird alter-egos with that song, and he nearly lost his straight male fan base in the process...of course, the Lovesexy front cover didn't help either; thank God for Batman I guess...

I'm a straight man and if i was your girlfriend is my favourite prince song. different strokes

Agreed! I kind of wish the other bass player had laid out on the cover, so we could have heard her even more on bass. I think a stand-up bass like she was playing worked quite well, and doesn't necessarily require an electric bass. I'd love to hear her do a version. Maybe she will after last night. We can't be the only people that are raving about the performance.

That was my favorite part of the prince tribute! smile

She was my second least favorite (next to Patti) boxed boxed

I was intrigued to hear other things by her, but I thought the tribute performance was totally blah.

TLC already made an "almost as good as" the original Prince's version. Period.

Nah.

I agree with the OP, the song loses it's entire lyrical point when sung by a woman.

Exactly.

I'm surprised that so many people don't appear to have listened to the song properly or understood

the lyrics. The song only makes sense when sung by a man. Or to be more specific, sung by a

straight man to his girlfriend. When sung by a woman, the song's original meaning is completely

lost and it just becomes another song about unrequited love instead.

Hmm.. I will be shocked if many disagree with me.

When I said many wouldn't agree with you, I just meant about Adam Lambert being a good choice to cover it. smile

The rant after that was just my over-acting braincells scatting off the idea of the song from different POVs. lol

Agree.

It gives it a jailbait slutty lesbian feel to it.

But the sound just screams for a SOTT remaster. Give us back our transients !

Beck makes the kind of records that i wish Prince would make from time to time.

this song is one of my favs, it's top drawer Prince.

i always dug the TLC version, and adore my man Lynden's acoustic version (see above)

i would enjoy a rendition by beck, bilal, Cee-lo and maybe even Common...?

Call me crazy, but I've always heard this joint as Prince channeling Patti LaBelle vocals through Camille on this one. I swear I could hear Patti killing it just as Prince sung it in Camille's voice. Especially the phrasing. I thought I was going to finally hear her do it the other night but I was wrong.
