What instrument did jackson play?

To me, a musician is someone who plays a musical instrument.

He wasnt a musician of any note. Great performer, entertainer, dancer, singer, child molester, etc - but no one was amazed by his musical prowess

Well, as much as I love Prince, he doesn't hold up to the bottom three AT ALL. I'm not even really fans of Marvin or Stevie, but P has not quite attained the "Classic" status that they have, at least in my mind. My vote goes for Aretha smile

No! That makes him a writer, a composer and/or a producer. Not a musician.

Wow I had no idea that Aretha Franklin was known as a master musician? She plays a little piano and has written some great songs but do you really think she is a better musician than Prince or Stevie Wonder? Or maybe you do not know what musicians actually do. Anyway you might be the only person who thinks P has not attained "Classic" status.

right - the art of actually playing music is so dead that people dont even know the difference.

Besides Prince and Stevie Wonder, tell me what INSTRUMENTS the others played and i will gladly change my opinion of them.

The simple fact of the matter is that tinkering a little on a piano or sitting at a mixing desk and wanking about with pro-tools or whatever, does NOT make you a musician.

musician

noun a person who plays a musical instrument or is otherwise musically gifted.

This is what the online Oxford dictionary has for the word 'musician.'

As a result i apologize for my earlier comments.

And in this case, i think either Prince or Stevie Wonder would get my vote.

Oh, ok. I saw your earlier comments and was just about to break down the Merriam-Webster definition of a musician for you but you realized the flaw in your assessment and apologized. So I'll let you be. wink

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

As much as I love ALL of them for their incredible contributions to the world of music...my vote went to Stevie because the actual question is...Who do you think is the greatest black musician of the past few decades?

In MY eyes, Stevie's 70's output alone based purely on the content and quality of the music, not sales and what not...eclipses them all! Yet I tend to forget that the year is 2010, making this a new decade, going forward. But my vote still stands. shrug

The question on this poll actually is:

Who do you think is the greatest black musician of the past few decades?

(I underlined the words that were left out from the poll from Steve Harvey's website)

A. Prince

B. Michael Jackson

C. Aretha Franklin

D. Stevie Wonder

E. Marvin Gaye

Now that I saw the full question on Steve Harvey's site, Prince DEFINITELY got my vote.

Oh, and when I voted, Prince had 61% of the votes.
