And, let's be honest, Prince has always felt that ridicule is nothing to be scared of.

Per Nilsen documents Prince's involvement with British new wave - which includes Adam Ant.
Nilsen writes that in May 1981, Prince attended a Steve Strange (member of Visage) party in London - at "The Embassy."
This was certainly at a time when Adam Ant was popular, but Nilsen doesn't mention Ant directly.
Visage, and New Romanticism in general, influenced Prince's image, as well as Dez's & others. It contributed to the Purple Rain image.

Edited to add: Prince's time in Europe in '81 also piqued Prince's interest in gay & drag subcultures.
"Am I black or white? / Am I straight or gay?"...

What Adam says may be true, except the reverse is also true. Adam's career was faltering and he brought in Andre to help him make a "Prince " album in Manners & Physique. And the result was maybe the worst Adam Ant album ever. God what a piece of shit, and I do like Adam Ant.

Adam tried to copy Prince, and failed miserably, losing his personality in the stiff production and heavy-handed sexy posturing. IF Prince copied Adam, he still kept his own personality intact and, in fact, flourished.

What I dont understand is why Adam totally abandoned the style he created.
Ant music.
The heavy tom tom drum sound, his unique vocal yelping, the spaghetti western/punk rock guitar sound, the deeply layered background vocals, etc.
He sounded like nobody else. Totally unique.

He didnt have to be funky or pop.. His music was practically its own genre.
Never understood why he just, even to this very day, totally discarded it.

yeah I totally agree. Even when he was acting goofy early on, the music was smart & creative. Later it was just goofy, and missing the unique personality behind it.

Adam Ant had a very strong visual and musical style.
He diectly influenced Prince in many ways. Not just the ruffled shirts and all, but even during the SOTT era with the color twist ties in the hair.

That was 100% Adam Ant.

[Edited 5/8/10 13:28pm]

Great observation.

Prince stole it...but did it better...he did the visuals justice. Adam Ant looks squirley.

ah, we could compare good vs. bad all day

vs.

you're always gonna get someone who says 'No, no, that was a good look for Prince'

so the only way real way is to compare dress up costumes, right?

vs.

That's the only non-Ants album I like. The 12" mixes were great too.

ALL HAIL ADAM ANT!!
"ANT MUSIC FOR SEX PEOPLE!"

Watch the pioneer at work. here.
You will see why Prince, Michael Jackson and all the others were watching him very closely!
Call him what you will, but he was totally ALL ORIGINAL.
He looked like nobody else.
He sounded like nobody else.
He moved like nobody else.

What new artist can you even say that about in music for the past 25 years??
