The Case of the Disappearing Guitar

http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=related

At the end of Tom Petty, Dahni Harrison, and Prince's tribute to George Harrison at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, Prince gives a mesmerizing guitar solo before tossing his instrument in the air never to be seen again. Still, the question remains:

Where did it go?! He throws it straight up and it never comes back down. He obviously doesn't throw it in any direction but up, and his arm movemnts show that it wouldn be physically impossible to have been caught by a spectator. None of the band members caught it because he was the first to be rid of his instrument while the rest all had instruments in their hands. He didn't step out of the way before it came down, because it was heavy enough that it'd smack his head in right after he threw it as he stood there for a few seconds afterward. They even zoom out and it's nowhere to be seen! Where the hell did it go?!

We all know that's not true. The thing'd give you third degree burns after that solo.

he often throws his guitar up into the air after a gig, up and slightly
to the front so when it comes down it falls toward the engineer or tech
guy or whomever it is, that is there in front of the stage to catch it.

on tv that might look as if he throws it into the air and it just kinda
disappears.

It just disappeared, period. It's called magic. Never heard about spontaneous combustions, aliens abductings, things like that?

I love the part when the cat mommy takes the kitty, too, great video biggrin

Is this a joke?

Prince has been throwing his guitar to a guitar tech for years now. Hell, he even did it in the Syracuse VHS. It didn't go straight up, it went into a tech's hands.

Let's not play dumb here.

Prince has an arsenal of folks in the front row of any show to pick up his guitar and scoot it away or to hand him pics should he drop his, and such.

He's been doing the dissappearing guitar trick for years. The way it works is he'll throw it in the air, and one of his guys will catch it. They'll hand it back to him on que, or wait until after the show to hand it back to him.

At which point Prince will inspect it for scratches and such. If there's any scratches, the staff is in big trouble. Smudges are not good either. And if the guitar is handed back to him while he is still performing but it's slightly out of tune, Prince will address that with his staff too. Basically, Prince destroys the souls of his employees after the show.

A typical conversation:

Prince : Moo Moo, why's there a finger print on my guitar?

Moo Moo (looking at Ray Ray and Mr. Muffy for support): But boss, those are your finger prints!

Prince: SHUT UP!!! Don't talk back to me fool! owwwwaaaaah!

Moo Moo: Boss, honestly!

Mr. Mufffy: Yes boss, he's telling the truth.

Prince (taking out surgical gloves from his coat pocket and slowly putting them on while holding his hand up in a display): Eeniee. Mieneee, Mineee, Mo..... I wonder where this glove will gooooo???? evillol

(Moo Moo, Ray Ray, and Mr. Muffy sweat and gulp nervously then assume the position).

Classic!

Prince is actually a nice guy. I think when he goes creative he demands alot from people. But he also (at least in the mid 90's and apparenly still re. Lotus Flower website) still fires people for no real reason. I hope he comes out of this. Although he is 50 and the chances are....

I doubt that would happen. Have you seen how hard Pete Townsend or Paul Stanley or anything has to pound a guitar to actually break it? It hitting the edge of the stage wouldn't break it. Prince has thrown his guitar on the ground anyway, and he still has it in one piece.

I mentioned something in a post about 4 years ago I think that the most impressive thing I ever saw... or rather that my 21 year old nephew CAUGHT while watching the 2000 Rave Video from the 1999 dec 31 concert was.... and mind you I had watched it for years and didn't realize it,

right after his bass solo on the front side of "Kiss," prince sort of rolls his bass on the heel of the body toward a slightly opened curtain upstage (Back). Now at first his bass is slightly tilted with the neck and tip (sorry of the terminology) toward the audience. Now it looks like the neck would eventually fall and the bass would fall flat and slide to the rear of the stage. However, instead, the slight drag from the floor slowly twists the bass and the mass of the neck still having its momentum begins to slightly right itself. The slow righting of the bass with its neck now pointing straight up APPEARS as if it turns and places itself BACK on the guitar rack or at least stops there. Now Prince even sorta watches it go into its rack. Then he sings his first line "you don't haveta be beautiful"

We watched it over and over and saw not hands catching it. I would assume, since prince NEVER has to pay studio time there, and after years of practice, and his motor skills ( I have seen him play ping pong at an aftershow so he has spatial intelligence as well), Prince might actually be able to do this... Or I think it just happened and even Prince was sorta watching it. LOL

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Well, he's not always throwing his guitar to his tech. At least not directly. Anyone seen the clip from an award show where he played "Don't play me"? After he finished he just threw the acoustic guitar straight up and it landed on the stage with a huge thump and clonk. He just threw it like a soda can over his shoulder.

But yeah, usually there is a tech to collect it. Remember the Jay Leno Show where he handed the audience member his Stratocaster while it was still in the middle of feedback? The guy must have thought wow, I have his guitar! Just a few seconds later some big dude takes it from him. Ha ha!

Yeah, that was really smooth stuff. It looks like the instrument is just flying or running across the floor. thumbs up!
