Initial prince thoughts..

I was born in 1991 so I cant say lol. But those from the 80's who knew princes music earlier on, what was your first thought of him when he just came out, did you like him? Did his music change dramatically/gradually the sound of what was coming from the radio after he came out and hit big?
And did you think Madonna (whenever i think of purple rain i think of like a virgin era) would last this long, and any similar artists to (Prince,MJ and Madonna) you thought would be bigger (or just as) in terms of "accolades" and being considered a legend along with those artists by the mainstream, who sadly havent.

Mine would be rick james although I wasnt alive at his peak and he did shoot his career in the face,

I remember my sister comming home with the 12inch vinyl of 1999 when it was released in the uk, that was it 4 me. I liked him from that 1st listen. I really got in2 prince when the Purple Rain gig was broadcast on tv. I remember thinking he was this otherworldly "thing" haha. I was aware of the other big music stars but it was Prince all the way 4 me. It was not till Sign O The Times however that i really started to appreciate his genius and really started to be a big fan of not only Prince but music in general.

I was in Jr. High School form 78-82. In the beginning when I'd hear him on the radio, I thought he was a girl. The first time I saw him on American Bandstand, I was shocked! omfg
Later on, in high school I still wasn't impressed. I didn't really like Purple Rain, which came out my Senior Year of HS, and didn't actually see it in the movies until last year. (I had seen the video, tho).
I started to like Prince around '87, in college. I had a roommate who was a Prince Freak! and she got me into him.

In high school, I was a huge Rick James fan. I didn't really like Madonna, and still don't.
I had loved MJ & the Jackson 5 since I was a little girl, and was into him well into college, for the most part.

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

My first thought of Prince when I was old enough to get into him was in the Purple Rain era. I didn't know of Prince in the Dirty Mind era. My thoughts of Prince when I first laid eyes on him was the famous When Doves Cry poster where he was dressed all in white. He had the most beautiful and soulful eyes I'd ever seen and he was holding a single red rose. I thought, whoaaaa!!! This man is super hot, super sexy and different from any artist I had seen in the day. I was totally fascinated by his looks and his sexy come hither ways. No other artist has ever affected me in the same way since, and I don't think will ever will. When Prince hit the airwaves I believe it did change music in the way we heard it on the radio, however, the man was breaking crazy records putting out a record every year. The record companies and other artists couldn't keep up with him!

I knew that Madonna would last because she broke records as a female as far as her ability to evolve, to be the ultimate chameleon and back then she was very much in to shock value in a sexual way. I feel fortunate to have been born in the Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince and Sade era. Prince has mellowed out, and rightfully so, he is older now, and has been through a lot in life. I think his life is by no means over, and I'm sure he is enjoying the journey. I think he misses the 80's when he had his day in the sun.
