"Pause & Reject" "Cause & Effect" is further evidence that Price is devoid of fresh ideas. If only he had an executive producer, label chief or engineer to convey how utterly dreadful this mess sounds.

Is it just me or does Prince have trouble picking the right single for each album? 9 times out of 10 the other songs on the album are much stronger than the single/ singles. Since he had the option to play a new song on the radio streaming live on the internet for the whole world to hear, why wouldnt he pick the strongest one he has? Assuming there is a album to follow this razz

I'm hardly one of the purple kool-aid fans, but I'm diggin on it. Great hook, stellar arrangement, and a solid groove. Oh...and the guitar playing is sick. Y'all need to back off the guy a little bit. This sounds like NOTHING else on the radio...shouldn't he get a LITTLE credit for originality?

I like it. Sounds like Prince is moving in a new direction. I also think the lyrics are God and Elect not cause and effect when he says he is made in the image of. This song sounds like advice and I use to say I would live my life without regret but u can't run from the truth which is u and sometimes in life u will have regret about the choices u made. I find it odd that most of the people that claim to hate it were first in line to hear it. Is Prince music like drugs u need your hit but complain about it not getting u high enough? I like the song for what it is and u can't compare this Prince to the old Prince.....the old Prince is dead and this Prince is the rebirth. I know some of ya'll have no idea what I mean but I pray one day u will and than u will see the light.

Also the part where he says "I am here where are u?" That is from Cochella I think. I know I heard him say this before at a gig so I don't think it's fake. Just my 2 cents I could be wrong won't be the first time won't be the last but at least I'll say I'm sorry. smile

You need to understand the difference between a one-off and a single, I think.

Thanks to The Current & to Prince for working together and getting it played and to the .org for posting it!

On the first listen, I dug the guitar & effects (scary deep voice! eek ), but could probably live without the 'hey hey' thing. As usual, I'll have to play it a few more times to let it sink in and get a better feel for it.

agreed! wink

If Cause and Effect is on the new album, it is technically the first single. If it's not it's a 1 off for promo and bootleggs. wink

It might be... guitar but only as an instrumental. Lyrically disappointing. sad

No, it isn't. Was "Feel Better Feel Good" the first single off Lotusflow3r? (He gave us a sample of that looooong before the album came out.) He also had (IIRC) four tracks off Lotusflow3r played on an LA station before the album came out. Were any of them released as singles?

Ok upon 2nd listening.

The musical start is great and promising it's when Prince starts singing the first verse, It seems like it just don't fit. And the music during the verse isn't in conjunction with the rest, it's doesn't have a Rock feel to it.

I can even deal with the "hey's" it gives it a gogo's or ramones feel. but the verses, the way he "sings" the verses (if you'd call it singing), and the music of the verses just dont fit imo. I think it needs some more work.

I think it sounds unfinished

My review;

Well, I wasnt expecting the Grand Progression or expecting anything at all so, in my honest opinion on the first listen it gets a 3 out of 5.

I liked some things about it, others hsould have been left off, like the acoustic / jazzy mid section. Im not sure as of why he keeps on doing this (like the live version of Dance 4 Me), however it kind of disrups my mood of the song in general, however I did like the vocal effect he used in that last vocal verse. I did not like the arrangement of the lyrics and those actually are nicely written but don't FIT the way he is singing it. Like someone said, it sounds like the same arrangement as Dolly's "9-5".

The good is this last 30 seconds we get of rambling dums and screaming guitar, I only wished it had lasted longer because there seems to be almost three different types of genres of music going on here....and while sometimes it DOES work for Prince's catelogus, sometimes some songs just DONT need to have any change coda. I enjoyed the last half alot more than the first....I liked it more than Love Like Jazz (which definitley did not fit on Lotus Flow3r imo), and less than a track like Dreamer (which it kind of reminded me of).

Its not "utter shit" like someone said, and it definitley is not "Rebirth Of The Flesh" or "Play In The Sunshine" but I wouldnt turn it off if it had came on random play...the last half is worth listening to even though it doesnt last too long.

The song is called "Cause and Effect," and it's a rocker - filled with virtuosic guitar work, explosive drum breaks, a poppy chorus, trademark shrieks and whoops, some intriguing lyrics

Sounds more like something you'd read on the backside of a B-movie you found on the lower shelf at your local video store.

It's not a recommendation, it's a warning!!!

Review of the song "Cause and Effect"

The first half minute or so is interesting, I like the poppy breaks here and there. But the longer it went on, the less I liked it. It has the problem a lot of later era Prince songs have... it just rambles on and on with no pure structure at all. A song like I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man has a beautiful structure... hook... chorus... and real lyrics you can understand. That's why it's a great song and will be loved and remembered forever.

But Cause and Effect doesn't have any of that. It just rambles on, sort of like Rock 'n Roll is Alive and Cybersingle. At the end Prince throws in a token guitar solo but that can't save this song at all. There's no real structure, hook, chorus, and the lyrics are too self centered and preachy to ever be a hit or a fan favorite.

It was definitely embarrassing to hear so many great songs on The Current (Sloop John B!) and then hear this dreck from Prince, a rock 'n roll hall of famer. Listening to Cause and Effect, you'd never know Prince was a great musician. He should be writing songs that are meaningful... at the very least, songs that are well structured and enjoyable, especially after so many years of making music. I think he's spending too much time reading the Bible and hanging out alone at Paisley Park. It's time for Prince to make some music that touches people... and not in ways they'd rather not be touched. smile

I'm gonna go listen to Pet Sounds now.

Final Grade for Cause and Effect: D-
Final Grade for Sloop John B: A+

Ok lets not get into a technicality spat eek . I can think of a many singles from the last few albums that were not the best choice IMO. The songs that got special attention for promos were not as strong to me. A single or song released for promo is supposed to generate hype and excitement. That's all im saying wink

It isn't a technicality. A trial balloon isn't the same as a single. Period.

You are now making an entirely different assertion, which is that Prince doesn't know how to pick a single. That's a matter of opinion - and it isn't an argument I'm interested in having, frankly. shrug arrow
