I've got no problem with the lyrics and I'm one who can't stand the preaching. But, have people really had time to digest the lyrics yet? Probably not - but this is Prince talking about regrets, its unusually open. Particularly the line about wishing he could "Leave a note, you know one like husbands and fathers wrote" - to me, that's him regretting not being married and being a father....quite touching.

So which is he trying to do here? lol

However, as always, he is defiant because he has his beliefs and he isn't the "subject" of anyone else - meaning, in part, a lot of the shit that's typed about him round here has no meaning to him. You gotta love that FU attitude, whilst still maintaining a compassionate outlook.

Doesn't sound like he has regrets, especially with the other lyrics in the song basically saying if you have regrets in your life, then you erase a part ofy our life that helped you grow into the person you are right now or becoming a better you, from those life experiences.

From that I got that he is basically saying he doesn't feel the need to apologize for being the person he was in his past, because it was and is a part of him and he learned and grew from those experiences, whether considered bad or good times. The lyrics basically says he wouldn't change a thing but his next of kin (<-whomever they are who may have had an effect on his life).

The part about leaving a note if this was in the "right now" (present day) especially the way the world is today, is basically saying that the advice (which could be interpreted in many ways) that he would give himself if he was his own father, and he was the child today, is that you can't have it both.
ways in life, (being a superstar and a grownup) or can be interpreted to saying you can't serve two gods, you have to make a choice to which path in life to take, and stay true to that path, regardless of what anyone else thinks of you. Just my two cents. shrug

I like your take on the lyrics some good points here, he's seen somethings that have confirmed to him that it's a choice be a star or grownup, i don't think he wants to be the star anymore he wants the family life he wants to be the hubby but he's taken the path of superstar so no sence in regreting it now ...he's just gonna have to play it out to the end ....but he wants to do it on his terms i.e. no contracts that tie him down to do things he does not want to do ....alot of what he says has (i know i going to get it in the neck) alot of post-MJ about it....

Good Post. biggrin

I just heard the new song a few times and its ok but nothing more. It reminds me a bit of Rock n roll is alive. But I prefer the songs Boom, dreamer, wall of berlin etc from Lotusflow3r. Even the songs on Planet Eart is better than this.

Then you shouldn't be on this site talkin' about music. lol Seriously, Lady GaGa is a joke. I don't understand why people don't get it. She was a performance artist. It's a complete accident that she got this big. I bet she laughs herself to sleep every night while counting her piles of money.

Interesting how many of the naysayers comments on this thread could basically be broken down to the usual "it doesn't sound like old Prince" rhetoric. The production on the song is flawless (although it's clear he's still using protools). A large majority of Prince fans always hate the way anything new sounds. Then, they hear it live one time and it's all of a sudden one of their favorite songs. Prince has always, ALWAYS, switched up the way he layers the instrumental tracks. He's ALWAYS recorded music that sounds nothing like what's currently being played on the radio (what's left of it). I'm really surprised that so many people don't see the musical effort in this song, because it's there. Lyrically, ehhh, I'm still not in love with it.

1st Listen: WHAT UTTER CRAP.

An artist of Princes talent must try really hard to make something this bad.

Slightly saved by the Lotus F guitar solos's.

There are a million artists on this planet producing better songs.

Playing the piano, or any instrument, does not mean you deserve to reach the ridiculous heights of adulation that GaGa has reached. Her "songs" are incredibly simple, boring and far more silly than anything Prince regurgitates on a bad day. But we, as a Prince audience, hold Prince to much higher standards. The world at large ate GaGa up so fast that they haven't even had time to think about how much indigestion they're going to have in a couple years. She's a nail in a coffin. Mark my words.

the lyrics are actually covering just 1 concept. it's about him wondering
what it'd be like if he had the chance to go back and talk to his former
self and pondering about what he would do different if he had the chance
to start over again. inbetween he mentions his current belief and state of
mind.

it makes me sad though that he would call his former body of brilliant 80s
work "nothing to remember but a lot to forget".

well he didn't exactly say it was his 80s work but that's the essence of
the message.

I don't think he's referring to his past work, just past misdeeds. He does say that "he wouldn't change a thing" - I don't think he looks at his past work as sinful but, perhaps, some of the things he's done....just like any of us, of course.

The song is explaining where he is at - and its that he's no longer the superstar, he's grown up. But, the way that is put across seems like he feels he should have learned that sooner in life. And, after all this reflection, we get a verse telling us to be more positive etc etc so that we have fewer regrets when we all, eventually, grow up. Its a mature song, fitting for its subject matter.
[Edited 2/26/10 6:48am]

This makes sense 2 me. Thanks 4 explaining. Love the song. Thank u Prince.

Hey i'm not saying she anywhere near Prince-dom but she coming close to madonna quick, fast and a hurry because people can see she can do her own stuff live, how ever she will be firmly fixed in "popland"

Where we all know Prince can move in all places, jazz - pop - rock without even sweating...because he's just that good lol

Only one listen for me, so far. The music sounds decent, song has a melody.

I feel like Prince spends 95% of his time recording songs and 5% writing them. His newest music is like elaborately decorated candy. Not very nourishing, but very sweet & pretty.

Well...I've listened to it several times now (on lotusflow3r - so in the best quality currently available). I think I like it - but I won't be sure 'til I rip it, put it in my iPod and drive to it.

That is my gold standard for music. If I like driving to it, it's the shit. lol

Prince thinks too much when he solos.

Instead of playing from his mind all the time he should play from his uh, Purple Supremacist Regions.

Tremolina

My opinion after four listens:

Intro - Cool, creative. The rock guitar and the hey hey hey parts really carry the song.

Verse - Mwah, kinda boring, not so rocky all of a sudden. Getting kinda poppy.

Chorus - Not cool, much too poppy to my taste, which doesnt fly well at all with the rock parts. Really hurts the song in my opinion.

BUT the bridge, solos and end are great. Tearing it up like he did on Family Name. Some C&D elements there too.

I think if the verses and chorus were a lot less poppy and much more rocky, I would like it a lot.

As for the lyrics. Most of it I am not really following. Too cryptic to my taste. Also, a shame that a song called "Cause & Effect" seems to be all about him, him, him again. Well the chorus at least.
