why not!!!! bawl

well, if that's what your heart desires, the song still exists

i don't feel that way. i've loved his recent albums. planet earth was deeply funky, lotusflower rocks.

he has definitely changed, but i wouldn't say i prefer 'the old' prince. his new stuff is strong, just different. i wish he would play the new stuff live, at shows.

but he doesn't play new stuff, does he? in fact, for example, for many years now prince has been playing "thank you for letting me be myself again" and "everyday people" at just about every live event, every. single. show.

he has an amazing repertoire of songs from which to choose, songs that people would love to hear, and yet he chooses, (out of a limited number in his set), to include those two early 1970s songs again and again and again and again and again and again and again. confuse i mean, it's actually sorta funny in a clearchannel kind of way when you think about it. at least, i've come to see it so neutral

i mean, you said us fans "love him for his past, rejecting who he is in the present" but who is living in the past, exactly?* biggrin

*disclaimer: this fool still loves prince concerts, regardless of those two songs sigh big grin

I agree with those statements.

I think I'm gonna demand my own fan category though because I'm not one of those who think that everything he did in the eighties was gold. My ratio of likes and dislikes was the same then as it is now so hearing more of his newer material would be cool with me.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Prince music was (used to be) brilliant, but it's not anymore. In the 2000's it has been pretty weak imo.

I'd actually rank "3121" as strong as his 80's and 90's stuff, and it only came out 4 years ago..

no no, I wish I could hear what you are hearing, Graf.Kid.

imo:

Musicology 7/10
3121 5/10
Planet Earth 5/10
Lotus/ MPLS 8/10

imo "3121" is weak, 2 or 3 good songs only,

a huge level below Prince's 1980's standard cry

Why is this shit so hard for you sheep to understand? There is consistently so little life left in Prince's music these days, but we still hold out hope that it will return. His later stuff isn't so much bad as it is tepid. He set the bar pretty high for himself and we know he's got it in him to move us still. Its not about living in 1984 or any other such nonsense. Its about being excited with the music he makes today.

Thanks, unfortunately, no matter how we phrase it the "fams" never seem to get understand where some of us are coming from. If you don't love everything, somehow you are a hater. Oh, well. shrug

Look at the main page of this site, two news items this year, What he did New Years and that shitty 'Fight' song. It's dull in Princeworld.

It's not so much that i won't accept him again, he puts out interesting music again as opposed to his recent tinny throwaway stuff, and i'll get interested.

I have a life, no longer have posters of the man on my walls. i grew up on him, but i grew up. Prince isn't my idol anymore, if he says something stupid and takes flak for it, i'm not going to defend him. he's not really that important to me at all in the grand scheme of things. Just an old friend i check on from time to time.

Some old friends lose their mind to booze and drugs, some to religion. It's not that much fun to be around them all the time anymore. That's just life.

Agreed. Everyone on here is surely a fan to some degree. Some of us remain hopeful of some sort of return to form; others think his form remains the same as it ever was.

I don't think it's about 'accepting him again' so much as this year having been one full of disappointments. Those that Mark alludes to and, of course, the whole lotusshambles.com fiasco.

Why do all this on a site dedicated to Prince? Because we all are either Prince fans presently or past Prince fans.

This is the point of my original post.

But if the subject of particular Prince music that they don't like comes up, they are free to tell the truth about how they feel about it. No one should lie about what they think about something. As for "just don't say anything at all about things you don't like", well, things never changed by people keeping their mouths shut and simply going along with the program.

I agree with this. However, is being a Prince fan really a "program"? Prince fandom is not like a political cause/religion or something. Sure, it inspires passion, but at the end of the day shouldn't it be fun?

I like prince.org a lot, and I enjoy seeing/reading what everyone else has to say. However, there is a fair amount of cynicism to wade through.

It swings both ways, perhaps the cynicism is needed to balance out the way out there uber-scary Prince stalkers floating around?

1985 - ATWIND was the worst Prince album ever made.
2010 - Hailed as one of the best Prince albums made.

1988- Lovesexy was panned as Prince reviewing his past and critics likened it to 1999 revisited.
2010 Lovesexy is considered to be a Prince classic

1995 Gold Experence considered self indulgent crap.
2010 Gold is considered as the "last" Prince classic.

I hated every Prince album post Purple Rain until SOTT. Then I hated every post SOTT until Diamonds and Pearls.

Somewhere around 1994 I started listening to albums like ATWIND,Parade,Lovesexy and started to gain appreciation for those albums.

Regardless of your own personal opinions about Prince his body of work will trump your views of him and someone out there loves an album you hate.

The best advise was given in 1985....

Open your heart, open your mind
A train is leaving all day
A wonderful trip through our time
And laughter is all U pay

he is not interested in the glam rock image any more...and does not play the games that the media like to involve themselves in...he is about his music, which he has more than enough of

perhaps, that is his curse...many ppl will love him for his past, rejecting who he is in the present, while others accept him as an evolving being

You should check out the thread on the "Super Negro Theory". You both seem to be on the same page.

those first 3 albums you mentioned, i liked them from the start, and i suspect Im not the only one. i think the ATWIAD is where a majority of the real fans stuck around and the bandwagon followers got off and started liking ZZTop or whoever else was popular instead of Prince in 1985. Prince was not so hot in 1985 anymore, and albeit a hit in 1986 with Kiss, he wasnt at the same level of fame as he was in 1984. It was tough being a Prince fan in high school in 1986, always defending his music, because I KNEW it was good, and it still is good, its superb.

But the last few records, (and I include utter garbage like TRC in that list) have been and always will be complete and utter shite, even with the passing of time....

I doubt he will be able to make another good album again, but Prince could surprise us somehow - I thought Lotus and MPLS would be the one, but I was disappointed again, its really poor and lifeless. However Im like that high school kid waiting for the next release each year with the same level of enthusiasm...

long live Prince! But please, his music now is shite and it will never be considered good.

wow MULEFUNK,

you scared me a bit with that comment, I'm glad you can appreciate the music now though wink

ATWIAD = some of the greatest 12 inches ever from Prince, Around The World is the Sgt. Pepper of Prince music 10/10 music

Lovesexy = was a big success in Europe, brilliant sound 10/10 worship

the Gold Experience = the last funk masterpiece from Prince (prince) 10/10 headbang

Mulefunk..... you really scared me... because these 3 albums are Prince classics..... lol.... punching

about 2010..

I'm not that optimistic about a forthcoming Prince album, like you seems to be... (?)

That is not what you said. You said we are here because we love Prince. If you are talking about his music, yes I love a lot of his music, more than I hate. But Prince as a person can go fuck himself.

And even for the ones who do have a level of hate for the guy or his music, I have no problem with their posts. They don't bother me. I just read them and keep it moving. For some of you, you can't enjoy talking about the guy for stopping to criticize those who don't dig him and thus adding to the negativity. i promise you guys if you ignore people here who solely exist to start shit, they will get bored and go away. But no, some of you launch into "who the bigger fan" diatribes.
