Well, I'm calling them out .... Hyundai wouldn't charge me that much ....

While charity is always good, it can be done privately and anonymously. Doing a tacky cruise ship gig for a D list radio DJ is never a good idea ....for a garage band or even a wedding singer even, it's something you do because you HAVE TO. Because your house is in foreclosure or need a new kidney or something.....like being a stripper to put yourself through college.

I know this is all just rumors, but in general if a friend wants to donate money to your charity it's good,.... to supposedly publicly dog a famous *friend for not doing your tacky gig well that's as tacky as tacky can ever be.

If TJ could come up with something a little more dignifying than this Private Joy cruise ship thing, like a BBQ or Tupperware party i think Prince might go for it. To be stuck in the middle of the ocean in a boat full of sweaty middle aged fat people swear you wouldn't be asking for a million bucks yourself, c'mon lets be real.
Nowadays I could picture Prince a lot happier on Alan Keys Liberty cruise party anyways.

I've never been on a TJ cruise, but I know many who have. They all tell me it reminds them of the Essence Fest in NO.

I have a feeling that P wouldn't be on the ship, I would think he would do the bon voyage like The Time reunion did last year.

Last year, they left from outside of LA. To send them off, Tom got the original members of the Time to do the show. Not sure how much they were paid, though. I'm sure if I dig enough, I might can find out.

It was for a charity, which makes it, a matter of public record! So by all means, when you've found it, please be sure to post it.

Piling on Prince

Prince apparently has some fence-mending to do with nationally syndicated morning radio show host Tom Joyner.

My buddy Jawn Murray, the D.C.-based celebrity/entertainment pundit and regular on Joyner's show, called to say that Tom dropped an on-air tidbit about Prince the other day. "What he said was: I haven't been happy with Prince since he tried to charge me a million dollars to do my charity cruise," said Murray.

"I thought, 'Let me call C.J. and tell her this.' At one time Prince gave Tom a donation for his Tom Joyner Foundation, which raises money for historically black colleges and universities, but nonetheless, when Tom asked Prince to come perform on the annual cruise, Prince wanted one million to come on the ship."

Why would Symbolina do that? I asked Murray. "Who knows why His Purpleness does the things he does," said Murray, adding: "Tom should be careful, though, before Prince writes a song about him the same way he wrote one about you, C.J."

Based on that Vikings fight song Prince recently penned, Joyner's got nothing to fear here. Had Prince been able to summon some of the passion that inspired "Billy Jack Bitch," I'm sure there would have been a little more fight in that sorry "Purple and Gold" song.

I wonder if he ever called Michael Jackson and what response he got. Sorry Tom your 'charity' cruises are the new chitlin' circuit. biggrin Prince can't be up in there with Bobby Brown and The SOS Band.

Knowing Tom, he probably has asked MJ, Janet and any other "big" r&b act.

I really think Tom wanted to get P to take his charity to the next level and get him more national press.

I cannot stand Tom Joyner particularly since I know he put Prince on blast for this. I am glad he does so much so kids can go to college but his show is a hot damn mess.

disbelief Just when I was doing so well at trying to be nice. disbelief

1. Tom Joyner doesn't need Prince to "up his profile"! He has a DAILY radio listenership in the millions!!!

2. Tom Joyner is one of the very FEW radio personalities that knows who Prince is. Remembers who Prince was and will play his current output regardless to how sad it is, on radio stations throughout the country that otherwise wouldn't be bothered to fit it in their playlists of current crap because the truth of the matter is, regardless to what the Fams on this board think, Prince IS considered Ol' School in the industry AND his current output just doesn't provide the IT factor that is required to separate it from the rest of the drivel!

3. The overwhelming majority of Tom Joyner's listenership consists of an audience that will always love Prince like that cool brother we grew up with but hasn't connected to in quite some time!

4. Doing the cruise would have reconnected Prince with the audience that got him through his beginning but he lost years ago because he needed to be free to be him, whether they agreed and liked it or not, so they let him!

The memories of the good times they shared with him through his past music has always garnered an invitation back into the fold but it's been up to him to come correct! Which he has proven time and time again that he is incapable of doing on his own!

5. Tom may have been tacky in putting him on blast but when family is talking to family about family, that's what the fuck it takes sometimes!!!

.
[Edited 2/12/10 13:15pm]

Great post and as much as people around here hate to admit it, to today's meanstream, Prince is considered old school no matter how many new albums he puts out. A lot of the groups that perform on those cruises and at Tom's Sky Shows are the type of groups Prince should be hanging out with instead of the silly current people Prince has been having at his parties. Hanging with those old funk groups might give him inspiration to put out some good jams on his next album instead of mixing current bullshit with his sound.

As for Tom, I don't like him because he's too damn silly and seems to me to have a problem with interracial dating. But he has some great concerts and used to have some great megamixes until he started mixing the new shit with the old. And he does do some good work supporting the historically black colleges and signing up new voters to vote the damn Republicans out of office so he's not all bad. lol

It's not about Prince. It's about the cause. Yes, Prince donated before but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a million dollars but even if it were, it's still kind of grimy to donate to a charity then later charge them for a performance. It's like asking for the money back. shrug Tacky! disbelief

For the record, that cruise has sold out each and every year since it started, so Prince presence was not needed for that. hmph!

-----
Despite the fact that the profits for the cruise goes to charity you can rest assured none of the acts are performing for free. P has been getting a million dollars for a few years and I doubt he is going to lower his fees.

If Tom wanted P to do it for free he should have just asked or tried to get another donation.

Nonsense
Lets be perfectly clear, TJ is a D-list personality DJ playing predominantly old school music, that's his job, lol He isn't doing anyone any favors, he is simply earning a living doing his job.
TJ's charitable contributions on the other hand are laudable and admirable and deserves all the props in the world for his work, but lets not pretend he is doing Prince a favor when he plays his music or because he is a fan.

Charity loses all significance and grace when it delves to these levels, If people want give from the heart it is beautiful, when it becomes Monster Truck Sunday sponsored by Budweiser type gigs coaxing *friends for a payback... not so much.
I think TJ needs to apologize for the very idea of Monster Truck Sunday type charity events.

Now why would you reduce Prince's performance to that of a wedding singer? Unless, that's what you really think of him. hmmm

Speaking for myself, I think his performance could have been the best thing ever to happen on the high seas and broadcast back to the mainland because that "d list dj" as you called Tom Joyner broadcasts live from his little "monster truck" type gig on over 100 radio stations across the nation that otherwise don't give Prince a single thought and later globally from his website!

That could have meant Prince performing LIVE as only he can do AND getting hellava airplay that even the all mighty Prince himself cannot get on his own to boot!

So bitch please...indeed!

Conversely, if he were the victim of a brutal murder, I'm sure a lot of folks here would blame him. maybe you'd say some dumb shit like "he never got his crystal ball CD, it was justified." Or whatever.
