Well, I actually wrote Tom Joyner after he did that on the radio and this is what I got back from him when he wrote me back.

What up, Jimmy!

We talked to Prince on the TJMS a couple years ago when the "Musicology" CD came out and he said at that time that he really wasn't comfortable being on the ship.

Tom

Message = Do you think that Prince having such a large asking price for you could have anything to do with what you said to him back when Michael Jackson was having legal problems that you thought that He would be the one with such problems and not Michael??? Although the joy that you and Jay seem to have in talking about his supposed hip replacement problems definitely has not helped your case. Maybe he just doesn't feel comfortable on a cruise ship. He has play the State of the Black Union so maybe you should get young Tavis to ask him. Maybe you should get him and others to come up with a song for Haiti as well.
See I didn't think that Tom had been fair to Prince in a interview from back when he had interviewed him during the Musicology tour.

All that may be true but if Prince was offended by any of it then it would have made more sense if he had just declined. Agreeing to do Tom's cruise for any fee, if he really has hard feelings about what Tom has said, in a way puts a price tag on his dignity and I think that makes the whole thing worse. shrug

It's no secret that Prince has contributed to many charities. How do we know that Prince hasn't contributed to Tom's cause in the past? Like someone else said, we don't know what went down behind closed doors, and it was tacky that TJ brought the issue to the airwaves. One would wonder if Tom took it to the airwaves intentionally to embarass Prince, and cause riffs between Prince and the African-American community, because of the amount of money Prince requested in order to perform on the cruise.

I mean, I commend Tom for all his hard work with the black community, but when it comes to possible business deals with artists, he needs to keep that behind closed doors, not go on a rant on the airwaves and whine about failed business deals, like a child whose mother took their candy away from them.

I totally agree with you in terms of African American artists having been exploited, and because of it they do support many causes other artists would not but at some point they have to start choosing charitable contributions otherwise they'll go broke--no different than you and I.

Yeah, Prince does so much of them! Like ... uhm...

Here's a hint: if your point is that Prince "has to start choosing charitable contributions otherwise they'll go broke", you better have a looooong list ready of Prince doing charitable work.

Major FAIL, Bart. Prince gives quite a bit 2 various charities, and does so in the same fashion as Sinatra did... low-key, anonymously, with no publicity.

Where is this antagonism towards Tom Joyner coming from? Have I missed something. Asking for that much money for a charity cruise is a bit much.

Not when you have the potential to profit Millions. on the cruise and show.

P would be the perfect act to get before they leave on the cruise. He could go to LA (or wherever he is leaving from) and have the people on the cruise go to the show and charge admission for anyone else that wants to go. He could sell out the Staples Center and get some major exposure.

So, it would actually HELP TJ and his charity. I know he could clear 3 or 4 million easy by the time he charges $75 to $100 for a ticket.

I hope Prince doesn't play on Tom Joyner's cruise. Tom Joyner always gets in the way of the act performing. No matter who Tom books he gets on stage, trying to get attention, dances, carries on making an ass of himself. Prince would not have that and he would tell him to watch from backstage motherfucker.

TJ is in the business of making money...believe it...who is he fooling--no one. Peep this, TJ's going to ask Prince to "up" his (TJ's) profile (and you know that's what that was about) and then try to cheap Prince out...then to add insult to injury...go around talking about it...whew...TJ needs to quit it.

Doesn't matter charity work is charity work, whether you show up in person or write a check.

Didn't Prince organize and appear at the State of the Black Union, gratis?

disbelief Just when I was doing so well at trying to be nice. disbelief

1. Tom Joyner doesn't need Prince to "up his profile"! He has a DAILY radio listenership in the millions!!!

2. Tom Joyner is one of the very FEW radio personalities that knows who Prince is. Remembers who Prince was and will play his current output regardless to how sad it is, on radio stations throughout the country that otherwise wouldn't be bothered to fit it in their playlists of current crap because the truth of the matter is, regardless to what the Fams on this board think, Prince IS considered Ol' School in the industry AND his current output just doesn't provide the IT factor that is required to separate it from the rest of the drivel!

3. The overwhelming majority of Tom Joyner's listenership consists of an audience that will always love Prince like that cool brother we grew up with but hasn't connected to in quite some time!

4. Doing the cruise would have reconnected Prince with the audience that got him through his beginning but he lost years ago because he needed to be free to be him, whether they agreed and liked it or not, so they let him!

The memories of the good times they shared with him through his past music has always garnered an invitation back into the fold but it's been up to him to come correct! Which he has proven time and time again that he is incapable of doing on his own!

5. Tom may have been tacky in putting him on blast but when family is talking to family about family, that's what the fuck it takes sometimes!!!

Oh, I did. And I'm sure that you noticed the same thing I did - CJ didn't take the time to go through Joyner's archives and FIND where he said that. She took the word of someone that I have never heard of. All she did was report second-hand, unverified information.

She didn't even call Joyner for verification. That tells me a LOT.

I don't trust anything CJ says. It's well-known she hates Prince.

No, family calls you on the phone, or takes you to lunch to talk, or anything BUT put you on blast...its a known fact in the "community". Putting people on "blast" is a new school technique - I'm not feeling it - and it makes me think TJ isn't so cool.

I agree with everything u said except #2. TJ was one of the early DJs that would play Prince's B-sides and album tracks. When he was traveling between Chicago and Dallas, he really did it. I vividly remember him breaking songs like "She's Always In My Hair" "New Position", "Irresistible B" and "Erotic City" on the radio. So, TJ did help to play a major part in helping P achieve radio play in the black community. I also remember him doing it during the Musicology and Emancipation days with his national show. He was one of the few that had Emancipation trax in rotation on a regular basis.

While charity is always good, it can be done privately and anonymously. Doing a tacky cruise ship gig for a D list radio DJ is never a good idea ....for a garage band or even a wedding singer even, it's something you do because you HAVE TO. Because your house is in foreclosure or need a new kidney or something.....like being a stripper to put yourself through college.

I know this is all just rumors, but in general if a friend wants to donate money to your charity it's good,.... to supposedly publicly dog a famous *friend for not doing your tacky gig well that's as tacky as tacky can ever be.

If TJ could come up with something a little more dignifying than this Private Joy cruise ship thing, like a BBQ or Tupperware party i think Prince might go for it. To be stuck in the middle of the ocean in a boat full of sweaty middle aged fat people swear you wouldn't be asking for a million bucks yourself, c'mon lets be real.
Nowadays I could picture Prince a lot happier on Alan Keys Liberty cruise party anyways.

I've never been on a TJ cruise, but I know many who have. They all tell me it reminds them of the Essence Fest in NO.

I have a feeling that P wouldn't be on the ship, I would think he would do the bon voyage like The Time reunion did last year.

Last year, they left from outside of LA. To send them off, Tom got the original members of the Time to do the show. Not sure how much they were paid, though. I'm sure if I dig enough, I might can find out.
