Garbled narratives.

Prince used to have some pretty simple stories. We met, went to her castle, BAM! Phone number on the stairs. Or maybe this one: Girl loves king. He’s busy looking for the ladder. Teh End. Lately, I’ve noticed there are some songs where I actually don’t understand what’s meant to be going on.

Take Fury for example. Girl and boy break up. He’s got a new band. She tried to call. He didn’t answer cause he was afraid she’d tell him to leave her alone (why is she calling then??). Then someone gave him a message that she had called. But he already knew this cause he didn’t answer. Did Prince mean he didn’t answer the phone or answer the message? But he’s still her man. But she’s scorned. What?
I’ve left out the "parallel" narrative from the vdeo clip cause that’s even more confusing.

Another is Lolita. Don’t go all thinking you’re gonna get me cause I’m not gonna cheat on my woman. Uhh, but imagine me on the tip of your tongue. Can’t sip u once. U know u’re fine. He’s sort of flirting outrageously with this underage chick, considering he’s trying to tell her no, don’t you think? What would this woman he’d a cheating on think if she heard this song?

But my favourite one is Marrying Kind. It’s not that it doesn’t make sense, it’s just that the concept is so convoluted. You better not break up with her cause I’m gonna jump right in there and give her some purple satin and stuff. Then she’ll buy me stuff. And I’ll tell her that I told you that you were the marrying kind, but you didn’t listen when I told you that if she came to me I wouldn’t run away.

WTF? Why would he tell this guy how hard he’s crushing on his girl? Does he want a black eye? How did this go in his head? That the current boyfriend will say "Oh, since you want her so bad, I guess I’d better just walk away so she can find out how you like your bath?". Or perhaps, "Prince, I feel so bad for you that your porkchop is hurtin’, here take my woman."

And don't get me started on Lion of Judah

I’m gonna call these NPG’s for short (Narratives Garbled by Prince). Nominate your favourite!

P.S. Not a hater thread - just poking fun at some of the quirky contradictions that make Prince Prince!

I love posts like this. I know what U mean. In a way I think it's just Prince's way of driving some of us deep thinkers crazy.

If I wasn't listening to Kiss fm's Natalie Cole/Glady's Night Battle, I'd go over some of these fine lyrics 2night.

The one thing that is true throughout Prince's hidden meanings is that there is a love in his life that has been married at the same time he was. "What do U want me 2 do?" "Can't U see this ring?

"Lolita," can be a certain girl, but she is actually forbidden temptation. Prince is gonna face that as a man 4 the rest of his life. Restraining from temptaion is what Prince would have to do to settle down and remarry. So Prince plays the fence real cool like, but like 1999 says...He's running out of time, and so is she. If these two people are coming 2gether 4 the sake of "Eternal Love," that's a big ball game. That's a different road...with different tears...A stranger ring than a simple symbol on your hand. When a man and woman have a little chill about settling down, it's for a long reason.

I'm ready. cool

precisely why he can't get no hit no more - the narrative's are to complex/bizarre for your casual listener!

Te Amo Corazon is a lovely song but WTF - 33,000ft above the sea?

I think that can be explained by him being on a plane. Maybe she was a sexy stewie--er--flight attendant. They joined the mile high club perhaps. Then he was afraid she would dump him because he kept going on about the dust of the earth and the knowledge tree.

Just a theory...
