I honestly think threads like this should be locked because they can't be substantiated. I only get irritated when people unequivocally state he is NOT homophobic. His very religion, like a lot of them out there, at the very least think homosexuality is a sin.

My own religion believes that homosexuality is a sin. But it makes the distinction between the person and the act. So, they believe the person is a sinner but don't hate on him, on the contrary they love him just like any other human being (we're all sinners after all!)
I have never bought into that, porf. I am not a sinner simply because I am bi and nor do I believe in separating the sin from the sinner. Can you separate the cheater from the cheating?

If we are all sinners, then people really should shut the fuck up completely but gays are the pent-ultimate of sinners for some reason.

Can we just play semantics for a minute?

Homophobia (from Greek homós: one and the same; phóbos: fear, phobia) is an "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals"

So the question would then be, is Prince afraid of homosexuals? Does he fear them like cats fear water? Is he skurr'd that someone is going to make a pass at him?

Think back to 1987 when Michael Jackson wanted him to duet on "Bad". His response? "Now the first line of that is, 'your butt is mine'. I ain't singin' that to you, and you sure ain't singing that to me." While the song was about machismo and grand standing (as was the video), Prince still saw anything near-homosexual as ....well, bad.

It seems that "Bambi" was more of an ode to get a girl, even if she was a lesbian. However, it also sort of fits the stereotypical idea of dumb straight men that says, "She just need a good dick in her, and she'll be cured of wanting the vag."

I think about the scene in the masterpiece Graffiti Bridge where Jerome was feeling up Morris, thinking it was the near-man Robin Power. They both wanted to throw up or pass out, yet is it really that bad? Guys would rather pat each other on the ass IN PUBLIC while WEARING LYRCA than accidentally touch each other's chest hair? Aaaaaawwwwwrighty then.

I'm not a black guy, nor do I claim to think like one. However, I do believe that there is a huge amount of prejudice in the black community against homosexuals. I can't imagine being a black gay guy and having that kind of angst coming at me, either indirectly or directly. (Of course we also know the amount of gay black guys in the community that are simply ignored or not acknowledge sexually by their straight peers.) Perhaps some of that prejudice has always been in Prince. It's difficult to say, but it's probably safe assumption that even Mr. Sexuality-Free- has something in his water that does not compute.

I don't want Prince to be gay. I don't think he is gay. I do think he's hypocritical for having an attitude, even secretly, that is negative toward gay people, yet he'll still call Wendy and Lisa to work on a song as recently as 2007, and ask them to perform with him just a year or two prior. Does he over look it because they're long time friends? How white of him, right?

It's no secret Prince is less accepting of anyone or anything different than his beliefs. No more open mind, open book, or empty room to fill up. Even as early as 1998, he was telling Sinbad's audience that "you can cut that how you want, but it's the truth" when talking about stauros (discussed currently on a different thread). I think homosexuality is part of that non-acceptance. Prince used to be political, not politically correct mind you. But now he's damn near racial and bald-faced prejudiced.

So is he homophobic? I don't think he's scared of queers, but he ain't gonna have them at this dinner table either. Oh, he reads the Bible with his gay friends? I bet he's trying to convince them they're wrong, like how he tried to switch Matt Fink over to being a JW, or how he told will.i.am or whoever that they were a slave to cursing and they didn't need to do that. He's like the Bill Cosby of music now, and we're all Eddie Murphy.

There is something inherently wrong with being okay that someone else does not feel the need to act like a decent person.

What are "we guys"? Are you suggesting there are others with me writing that post? Or are you trying to put me in a box under a label?

In what way did "we guys" try to suppress anyone's freedom? Did "we" do a coup d'etat?

Has it ever occurred to you that "decent" might have a different meaning to me than it has to you? Morality is a personal thing you know...

No, I meant that some of you try to squash dissenting opinion on here on a regular basis. Asking why people just don't leave when they give an opinion you do don't like, stuff like that.

Morality is a personal thing, I agree but Prince can be just flat out wrong and some people here will overlook it.

Oh yeah, I know that but I think Christians themselves don't follow what they say they stand on or being gay would not be the big deal it is to them. It is why I don't have respect for Christians as a whole.

I've nothing against opinions that are different from mine. What I object to is insults and humiliating behaviours. Those are contrary to the idea of freedom itself.

Maybe they don't overlook it... Just maybe it's not so "flat out wrong" according to their own standards. I would never support a person I disapprove of. I support Prince because I like him, both artistically and as a person (as little as I know him of course).

Sorry but I do. The good ones don't speak up when the evil ones do bad but will get in your face to tell you what is wrong with you. I wants no part of that. In one breath some of you claim to be better than us heathens and then when you screw up, some of you claim the sinner card.

I can count on one hand the Christians that actually walk the walk that I know personally and I can't really point to anyone out in the secular world who I'd give the title to.

Interesting. I never noticed Prince identifying with Blackness until very recently. I think any percieved recent homophobia is most likely due to his religious stance. Ironically Prince has done some of the most feminine things on stage and the big screen. Like I said interesting stuff..... I remember being in the barbershop a few years back and someone brought up Prince. The cat in the chair said "I never did check for dude 'cus I thought he was fruity". That was some ignorant shit. I think dude was lyin - just bein overly masculine....but you NEVER participate in a barbershop argument. Not a Black Barbershop anyway....

Maybe homophobic is a little strong. It seems that Prince does not approve of the gay lifestyle, not that he is homophobic in that he detests gay people. I don't believe that. Surely his religion recognizes "all God's children?"

Yeah, I wasn't too sure what that meant either. But according to The Simpsons, "the gay lifestyle" involves smelting, casting, and iron ore.... so that's what I'm going with: Prince doesn't approve of gay steel mill workers.

(P, those are some tough dudes. I'm just sayin' that when you are a little fella - and you ARE a little fella P - you don't want to go around pissing off gay steel mill workers.)

Considering how absurd this thread is, I say we go with "No (except for Gay Steel Mill Workers)". I mean, it's been a while since P played a show in Pittsburgh, so my conclusion is obviously correct. Case closed, time to move on.

Having lived for years in a gay neighborhood, I am not sure if I could ever spot anyone "play[ing] up to the stereotypical gay thing". Truth be told, outside of the occasional (very tacky) rainbow flag paper hanger, it was just as banal as any yuppified/gentrified "straight" neighborhood I have ever lived in. But that's what happens when people get married/partnered, buy houses, get kids and get old. They get "ordinary". neutral

As for P... well, from my flaming liberal view of the world, it seems fundamentalist belief systems are at a constant loggerhead with homosexuality. And after undergoing such a serious conversion to a rather extreme form of Christianity, can we really say that this is the same guy who penned "Controversy"? Who collaborated with gay musicians? Who allowed himself to be photographed riding a Pegasus buck naked? Maybe it's the lib in me, but I just don't see that "free to be you and me" Prince anymore. sad

On the flip side, gays can now marry in Iowa, and they somehow got it done w/o Prince. Imagine that. It's pretty cool (and sad) that the good people of rural Iowa are actually more progressive than Prince.

But, what the hell do I know? I could be as wrong as a can of Billy Beer. So I am sticking by my Gay Steel Mill Workers theory.

Prince is not homophobic. Your friend's story sounds a little suspect and there are many relevant details missing.

What was your friend's role with the London concerts?

this may be an indirect answer and sought of irrelevant but i stumble across this and thought it was interesting to share, it's prince telling a story about stevie wonder:

"One day, he wanted to show me what it's like for him to experience the world, to actually feel a piece of music, so he held my hand. Here, hold my hand." Prince extends his palm, and I take it. It's warm and dry, and his nails are exquisitely manicured. "Now at first, it's like 'Whoa, I'm holding hands with a man!'" He quickly released his grip and throws his hands up. "Now, those thoughts and feelings are mine, and we all have to work those things out for ourselves. But then I started thinking what it means for Stevie to be able to hold someone's hand -- anyone's hand, even a man's. He's telling me he respects me. And by extension, he's teaching me that I have to have that same respect for everybody in life."
