this record got me back into prince ... i had sold all my tapes ... it was when graffiti bridge came out ... janes addiction ritual de lo habitual came out the same day and that was where i was at ... slightly embarrassed by prince for a while and not that into his post lovesexy output ...

i dont know why i bought the symbol album ... i really hated diamonds and pearls at the time ... save gett off ... it was just too poppy ... i think i just told myself that i should check him out see what he is up too ... the tape stayed in my car on repeat for about a year ... and i also used it to learn drums ... i would crank up the tunes and play along thru the whole album ... it was good for working on my foot pedal action ...

i love the kirsty alley bits ... sexy .. i used to even like tony m. ... now when i listen i get a little upset .. no one should discuss bustin u like a pimple son in a prince song .. its just a nasty image and ruins the song .. the first time i heard damn u i whispered the words "damn u" just before he actually did it ... it was such a predictable song i had to laugh that i knew he would do that even tho i had never heard the song before ...

why did it fail? hmm well looking back on d n p prince success came from not so much gett off but the song diamonds and pearls ... so cheesy sounding but like thieves in the temple .. just a really great irrisistable pop song .. universal like beautiful girl .. that is why the grandmas and old folks bought it up ...

symbol had none of that ... it was all some personal excuse for dating a little girl .. his catchiest tune .. blue light .. was way too personal and paparazzi themed and a reggae song at that .. same with morning papers .. just not accessible to those who buy the pop records

still a great album .. melt with u .. sweet baby .. 2 the 9's .. sexy mf for the horns alone is great ... pimp rag tootsie pop and a cane ... three chains o gold ... blue light of course my fav ... lots of great material just not really pop material ... there is a shade to it all that seems to intentionally discard the pop formula imo ...

unlike the orgers i actually like this one all the way thru ... d n p has tracks i just cant stand mixed with some of his best work ... this one is more of an even flow of pretty good to pretty great but not unstopable like say a walk dont walk or money dont matter

Levi Seacer, Jr. is an American musician. He was an early associate of Sheila E. when he was tapped by Prince to form a new touring band after the demise of The Revolution in 1986. Seacer became the band's bassist, as well as a backing vocalist. Later, he began collaborating with Prince as a songwriter on several projects. Seacer was a founding member of Prince's New Power Generation in 1991, switching from bass to the band's guitarist. He remained a member of the band until 1993, and also participated in the later version of Madhouse. After leaving the Prince camp in 1993, Seacer has worked as a producer and session musician on various projects, most notably the gospel music ensemble Sounds of Blackness.

In October 1998, Seacer (along with Tony M.) filed a lawsuit against Prince, claiming that Prince hadn't shared royalties that Levi and Tony were owed for songs they had co-written for Prince's NPG Publishing, including "Sexy M.F." and "My Name Is Prince". In the end Mosely and Seacer settled for approximately $40,000 each (apparently, not even enough to pay their legal expenses), having sued Prince for $800,000.

Despite the 80's being the Golden years. Ive always regarded this era has my favorite . From prince through the Gold Experience , including Come and Exodus. (also including The Hits /the B-sides) It was prolific and FUNKY. I was in college and a young adult at the time which would explain why it related to a really fun carefree time in my life .

Oddly enough , Bookending this era are Diamonds and Pearls and Emancipation which neither I can stomach much of now.

ahhh

My Name is Prince
7
The Morning Papers
And God Created Women
2 Whom it May Concern
Pink Cashmere
Dark
Letitgo
Space maxi single
Pheromone
The Good Life
The Exodus has Begun
Return of the Bump Squad
Gold
I Hate U
Endorphinemachine
Shy
Pussy Control

Prince should have listenned to Warners on this one.

I love this album. I can't listen to it from beginning to end anymore (I can't do that with many of his albums in the 90s), but it's still one of my favorite Prince albums just by the sheer number of funky songs and the grab bag of musical styles. Prince was showing off on this album, and I love it when he shows off, even when it's excessive.

Songs I like:

Continental
Damn U
7
God Created Woman
3 Chains of Gold
The Max
Melt With U
The Flow (yes, I even like that redface )

It was such a relief to hear the album after D&P (which I did not like).

Yeah, "7" would have set a good tone for the entire album. "My Name is Prince" wouldn't have been terrible as a lead single, though. Maybe a week or so before "7". "Sexy MF" could have been a last single. Of course it wasn't going to do well!

http://prince.org/msg/7/249412 Prince Presents The Sacrifice of Victor

What is sacrifice?
(We s... we s... we s... we sacrifice)

NPG in mass attack, Sonny, please.

(we sacrifice)

Church if u will, please turn 2 the book of Victor (We s, We s)
We like 2 start at the top if u don't mind

(we sacrifice)
(Don't say it, preacher)

I was born on a blood stained table
Cord wrapped around my neck
Epilectic 'til the age of 7
I was sure heaven marked the deck

(we sacrifice)
I know joy lives 'round the corner
{Joy for sale down on the corner} (we sacrifice)
One day I'll visit her I'm gonna
{Out on my block I'm just a loner} (we sacrifice)
When she tell me everything {tell me}
That's when the angels sing {sacrifice}
That's when the victory is sho 'nuff {sho 'nuff down with the sacrifice}
(we sacrifice)
(help me)
(Don't say it, preacher)

Mama held up her baby 4 protection
From a man with a strap in his hand
Ask the Victor 'bout pain and rejection
U think he don't when he do understand

(we sacrifice)
I know joy lives 'round the corner
{Joy for sale down on the corner} (we sacrifice)
One day I'll visit her I'm gonna
{Out on my block I'm just a loner} (we sacrifice)
When she tell me everything {tell me}
That's when the angels sing {sacrifice}
That's when the victory is sho 'nuff {sho 'nuff down with the sacrifice}
(we sacrifice)
(help me)
{S.A.C.R.I.F.I.C.E}
(we-we-we sacrifice)
(Don't say it preacher)
(sac-sacrifice)
(we-we-we sacrifice)

(we-we-we sacrifice)
(sacrifice... if u turn the page)
(Don't say it, preacher)

1967 in a bus marked public schools
Rode me and a group of unsuspecting political tools
Our parents wondered what it was like 2 have another color near
So they put their babies together 2 eliminate the fear
We sacrifice yes we did
Fighting one another, (we sacrifice) (don't say it preacher)
All because of color
The angel of hate - she taught me how 2 kick her
If she called me anything but Victor (u mean like nigger?)
If the only thing that tells me is father time
Then sacrifice is the mutha sublime - we love it

Listen mutha - we sacrifice

(don't... don't... don't say it preacher)

(we sacrifice)

(Well, well, well, well)

(What is sacrifice?)

Hold yo' text, deacon

Never understood my old friends laughing
They got high when everything else got wrong (pass the booze up here)
Dr. King was killed and the streets
They started burnin'
When the smoke was cleared, their high was gone
Education got important, so important 2 Victor
A little more important than ripple and weed
Bernadette's a lady, and she told me (what she say?)
"Whatever u do son, a little discipline is what u need,
is what u need, u need to sacrifice"

(we sacrifice)
I know joy lives 'round the corner
{Joy for sale down on the corner} (we sacrifice)
One day I'll visit her I'm gonna
{Out on my block I'm just a loner} (we sacrifice)
When she tell me everything {tell me}
That's when the angels sing {sacrifice}
That's when the victory is sho 'nuff {sho 'nuff down with the sacrifice}
(we sacrifice)

(what is sacrifice?)
(we sacrifice)

{S.A.C.R.I.F.I.C.E}
(we sacrifice) (joy around the corner)
Hey Wendy, how come we... (we sacrifice)
'scuse me y'all (we sacrifice)
We don't don't mean 2 take up yo time (joy around the corner)
But we got something
heavy on our minds (we sacrifice)
Yes, we do (we sacrifice)
Sometimes, u gotta leave the one u love
Somebody, anybody, everybody wave your hand
Around the corner, there's another sacrifice (joy around the corner)
But u got 2 do the best u can y'all (we sacrifice)
Say u got 2 go through it (go through it)
U got 2 go through it all (go through it all)
High glory, yeah
Sell it, don't tell it, don't tell me (joy around the corner)
[.....] nice at my feet

Lord I might get tired,
but I, I've got 2 keep on (we sacrifice)
Walkin' down this road, (we sacrifice)
Keep on walkin' down this road (joy around the corner)
When I reach my destination (we sacrifice)
My name will be Victor

Amen

Recorded Paisley Park Studios, September 1991 to March 1992

Released April 3, 1993

"The Morning Papers" is a song by Prince and The New Power Generation, from the 1992 Love Symbol album.[1] The B-side was "Live 4 Love", a track from Prince's previous album, Diamonds and Pearls. The UK CD single included "Love 2 the 9's", as well, also from the Love Symbol album.
The Morning Papers

He realized that she was new 2 love
Naive in every way
Every schoolboy's fantasy she was
That's why he had 2 wait
If he poured his heart into a glass and offered it like wine
She could drink and be back in time 4 the morning papers

They could take a walk down the ocean side
Make a wish on every wave
They could find a carousel and ride
Or kiss in every cave
They could contemplate the entire universe or just one star
Oh, just how far was the walk 4 the morning papers?

Yeah
Let me play it 4 U one time, oh oh
Well
Hey
Shucks

Why is age more than a number when it comes 2 love?
Should we ask the ones who speculate
When they don't know what it's made of?
Should we ask the moonlight on your face or the raindrops in your hair?
Or should we ask the man who wrote it there in the morning papers?
Hey

Should we ask the moonlight on your face or the raindrops in your hair?
Should we ask the man who wrote it there in the morning papers?
Oh yes!
Somebody help me sing it now

La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la

Oh yeah – hey, hey, hey
Yes

La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la

G'on! Play!

La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
OK

I remember when the single My Name Is Prince came out, I lived in Richmond, Surrey then. I bought it at HMV and listened to it over and over again and I remember I was blown away by the '2 Whomever It May Concern' track. It really made me curious to the whole album.

My Name Is Prince is weak, and Sexy MF is kind of great and boring at the same time. But the album really kicks in with 2 the 9s, and it continues wonderfully through the next several songs. Arrogance breaks up the flow, though. It's all right but doesn't really contribute anything. The way he changed Rock to the F.L.O.W. for the album is awful, just awful. But after those two songs, the album picks right back up and reattains brilliance.

I love Damn U, but it never should have been a single. People take song titles way too literally, so it never had a chance of being a hit.

I do wish Continental and The Max had been released. I would have LOVED some remixes of those songs.

Dude, I seriously think he tore up the mic on "The Flow". I don't care what anybody says,... that shit was hot.

I have to agree. This type of funk on this album suits him better.

I also agree! I love Tony. Especially on this song!

"The Continental" and "And God Created Woman" should have been released as singles.I never understood the point in releasing "The Morning Papers" as a single.It's a decent song,but not worthy of being a single,imo.

Yeah,I think it's the most boring song on the album.Not much going on there wink If they wanted to release a slower song as a single,"And God Created Woman" is a much stronger choice.That song is BRILLIANT!

It´s a great, crazy and so much fun album though.

Yeah,it's a fun album.It's like a wild rollercoaster ride with lots of twists and turns lol It's the most 'fun' album that Prince recorded in the 90s.
